The Button Man Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 507 ratings

A visit from Button Man means only one thing: someone wants you dead.

Duke is born into the world a hired killer. It’s his birthright—all he knows, all he thinks he’ll ever be. Then one fateful night, the unthinkable occurs and in the most tragic of moments, a promise is made. That promise is kept for almost fifteen years, until he comes face-to-face with a target he never expects and a future he never sees coming.

Kelly spends his days in a classroom, while his nights couldn’t be more different. Unbeknownst to those around him, their friendly neighborhood teacher is the handler for a hit man. For over a decade he has watched Button Man’s back from behind a computer screen. He is content living his double life, believing he will never cross paths with the dangerous assassin, but fate has a different plan.

When the past collides with the present, Duke and Kelly must prevent it from destroying the future. It’s not just their lives they need to think about—the entire world of a fourteen-year-old girl is about to spin on its axis. Dodging bullets and uncovering truths bring the two closer than they could have imagined. But lust takes a back seat to survival when enemies threaten to drown them both in blood. Can they navigate these twists and turns when death is lingering at every corner, or will they die trying?

I mean who can resist a sexy older, cold hard killer who has no remorse yet who cares so deeply for the ones he loves and will do anything to keep them safe. Add in a hot tech nerd perhaps somewhat morally questionable who once he realizes he may not live too long turns into a very smart snarky sort of tough guy, and I was hooked It was so well written it flowed and engaged me.

This is a fast paced mix of cold murder and intrigue with a bit of torture, a hunt for the bad guys, lot of snark and a really sweet love story in fact two love stories past and present. Throw in a smart tough teen with issues at the high school and a cat who pees on petunias and you have a great fun read.

Like all her other books there are definitely bloody scenes, cold blooded murder and torture ( if it was a movie I would have covered my eyes and muted the sound ) but somehow once again as in her other books she had me finding the violence rather acceptable (this is not a easy feat) -I would say its low angst as I never once questioned who was going to come out on top I just had to follow along The sex scenes were just sexy enough but not over the top which considering the length of this book was perfect.it was total the connection between Duke and Sparrow that made this book for me . In order to survive Swallow had to make some fast decisions about Duke despite just meeting (although they had been working together for over 10 years) and Duke had to rethink his position on life in order to get to that happy ending .

What I really found interesting was what a fast read this was - perhaps because it was a straight story line - We were given all the backstory we needed to follow along but none of the endless what every one did for the time between the prologue and 15 or 16 years later when the story starts. It was a fantastic clean read - I am not knocking books that give us metaled background and totally flushed out characters but this was so refreshing From the very emotional prologue to the funny snaky end it is so worth adding it to my library

Button Man…A contract killer; a professional assassin.

Kelly is a mild mannered geek who just happens to handle The Button Man, sending him on his assassinations. Duke is sent to kill Kelly. But instead he takes him home. Duke knows he’s bringing a heap of trouble on his head but something about Kelly speaks to him. Kelly has the same issue. “He ‘effin’ waggled his brows. I wasn’t sure if he was the sexiest scariest person or the most annoying scariest person.”

This author created a great story and peoples it with personalities that jump off the page. Twisty turny story with a lot of depth, wickedness, and blood. No spoilers cause the reader needs to discover the twisty stuff for themselves. I’ll just say I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Well written (as always) with mystery, heat, family, and a Button Man that has a great deal of heart.

    Review:
I had never considered "mafia romance" as a genre. Then I read Davidson King. Now it is my favorite genre. The Button Man is yet another wonderful mafia romance. I loved it.

Duke and Kelly are a wonderfully complicated couple. Their relationship is new and old and full of secrets. They are in the same room for the first time when Duke is sent to kill Kelly. This is not a meet-cute story.

The action is quick and sustained. The mystery/thriller aspects are very good. I literally did not see it coming. The romance is wonderful. Davidson King writes flawed characters who together overcome almost all things. Even the things that do not overcome cannot keep them apart.

I am looking forward to more books in this universe. I am also looking forward to the audiobook which I hope is sooner rather than later.

I received an advance review copy from the author. I wrote an honest review.

The Button Man by Davidson King is a story of love, loyalty, and second chances. I read straight through because I couldn’t put it down. It has action, suspense, and humor. I thought I knew what was coming, but was pleasantly surprised that I was wrong. Sometimes when reading a book, the story is predictable, and I can live with that if it’s well written. Sometimes I think I know what’s coming, then something else happens, but it makes no sense. This was not that book! Things came together perfectly in The Button Man, and in an intriguing way. Davidson King wrote gritty main characters, and the side characters added so much to the story. I loved everything about this book and highly recommend you read it!

I'm and automatic purchase for this author this book unfortunately did not hold up for me. It was ok. Loose ends and unanswered questions bother me and there were quite a few. I never felt totally invested in either MC and the the heat was slow to non existent.

I mostly read mm romance but every now and then I crave a bit more oomph to the tale. After discovering the Cold Boss stories I found out how exciting Mafia/Hitmen stories can be. This is an intense page turner with some mm thrown in to make it a perfect read. Hardened, ruthless men who think little of killing when needed but its still have a heart, this is a great story that had me hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars 🖤 Duke and Kelly 🖤

    4.5/5 stars.

I really enjoyed this one.Davidson’s are never a miss for me.

I loved Kelly aka Sparrow. He’s the tech guy, nerdy, assertive and so smart. I loved his character and the way he created a relationship with Ever and just how easy going he was.
I also loved Duke aka The Button Man. He’s such a great dad and son to Cal and he’s also very good at what he does but he really wouldn’t so good if it wasn’t for Kelly’s expertise. I loved how they collided together and formed their relationship which stemmed from 10 years of working together unbeknownst to them.
I also loved Duke’s relationship with his daughter Everleigh aka Ever. She’s such a great teen and I very much appreciated it.
I loved the plot and everything else but I think the story just needed a bit more of Duke and Kelly’s relationship meaning I wanted to see how they were getting used to their life’s together and all the feels that come with that and I’m not devaluing the epilogues cause that was also needed but I wanted a bit more from them.
With that said I still very much enjoyed my time with it and read it in one sitting.
Can’t wait for the next book by Davidson !

I like the use of the old school nickname for non soldiers/hitmen - it immediately sets a tone before even reading the prologue. I also really like the hitman/handler pairing; especially as Duke and Kelly (the surly assassin and nerdy guy who vets all his contracts and keeps him off law enforcement radars) give us some lovely age gap and grump/sunshine vibes. The plot is a decent job tale involving secrets, morally grey decisions/actions...and of course, revenge.

It all sounds great, and it could be brilliant, but there's just so.etching about this book I can't out my finger on which makes it feel to me like it's not quite the sum of its parts. Yes, The Button Man is entertaining with its twisty plot and sweet romance, but I think there's potential for much more than that. 3.5* rounded up.
