Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Melissa Addey's Moroccan Empire series
A rare chance to see into the hopes, flaws, and compromises of people brushed over in most Western history books.
Historical Novel Society

Absolutely loved every bit of it. The characters are fascinating, the exotic setting beautifully described (love the camels!) and a devout nun caught in the middle— excellent. And how she experienced love in its many forms was deeply moving as well as her life coming full circle.
Chill with a Book

One of the best love stories I have ever read. Five stars.
Dutchy's Book Reviews

Melissa Addey has penned a fascinating account of the rise to power of the North African Almoravids. Addey's extensive knowledge and research show in the vivid descriptions of North African landscapes, life, customs, and religions, not only Muslim but Christian and Jewish as well. Highly recommended.
Historical Novel Society

Customs, beliefs and rituals, are all wonderfully described... an exquisite book.
Discovering Diamonds

Superbly plotted, with a vividly described setting and packed full of memorable characters.

Hello!

Would you like two free historical novellas? Visit my website (my name .com) and pick up your copy of The Cup and The Consorts.

I write historical fiction across several different eras, as I love to research new times and places. Come with me to:

Ancient Rome: meet the backstage team of the Colosseum, tasked with creating spectacular gladiatorial Games.

Medieval Morocco: four women's lives intertwine to tell the story of a rising empire across North Africa and Spain.

18th century China: the gilded lives of four imperial concubines, each struggling to find her place in the Forbidden City.

And my latest: Regency romances, where our heroes and heroines are a little unusual...

Not a bad effort, but nevertheless a book with several major flaws, especially for a historical fiction book.

The biggest problem is that the author never really establishes time or place successfully, both crucial elements of good historical fiction. The book takes place in the 11th century in a city in what is now Tunisia, but the author never provides the necessarily details to situate the reader in that time in place. The book could just as easily take place at any time up until the early 20th century, and in any location in the Middle East/North Africa.

The second major problem is that the book tries to cover too much time (20-25 years) too quickly. So the writing feels episodic, as the reader pops in and out of each event needed to propel the story along, rather than being part of a strong narrative.

The third problem is that the book ends at the 75% mark....the rest of the text is a preview of the next book in the series....I hate it when authors pull this stunt.

If you want to read some really good books that take place in North Africa, read Jane Johnson's novels...they're much better than this book.

This is the story of Hela, a healer who is given a cup with magical properties. She uses it to entice a man she is interested in and he dies. To atone his death she enslaves herself to his sister Djalia. This story is rich with history and shows the tragic decisions that Hela makes. When you think she has finally found happiness, it's gone. I really enjoyed this book and have started reading the next in the series.

This book had a historical setting that was beautifully described. It was sad that the women in the story were broken in the same way they are today. The main character tried to help but I fear she may have made things worse. It is a thought provoking story.

I love historical fiction and love the history of The Maghreb. A while back I had the privilege and pleasure to visit Morocco and fell in love with the country and its people. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series and hope the other books are longer.

I first read 'The Cup' as a free book from Melissa's web site and was delighted when the follow-up books came out in audio. I have now listened to all three books and re-read the cup.
All I can say is Thank You for transporting me to a time and p!ace that intrigued me and invited me into the lives of four very different, strong and powerful women.

This book kicks off the trilogy ...A string of silver beads, None such as she and Do not awaken love. It is necessary to read this first to understand some of the fiction that impacts some of the characters.
