The Doomsong Sword is a treasure. A classic everyone should read. Harlond has done a marvelous job inventing a mythical place full of thick-furred wolves, dwarves, the semimortals of Asgard and leather-winged dragons with tongues of flame. The main character is a young man called Davor who, although frequently tricked and trapped, goes from strength-to-strength in his quest. One adventure sees our friend traveling with the lightfoot troublemaker Loki, whose element is fire. Davor must beat a path to Andvari’s treasure horde to get much needed gold. With Master Odo who can read thoughts and greedy shapeshifters on the prowl, how can Davor possibly overcome so many obstacles with so many more adventures to come?

I gave this book five stars because of the ingenious word pictures that sum up warm fires and good friends. It’s true that one young life can make a huge impact on the world, not because he has power. But because he has the edge. Readers will appreciate the heroism of Davor and enjoy rich words and exciting adventures. It’s truly a compelling read.

The Doomsong Sword is a book about Davor and his harrowing adventures. Davor is a dreamer, stuck at home with his two brothers. He's told to go buy his adopted father some medicine. He stops by the tavern first to warm up and listen to fables. When he is asked by an old sea captain to join his crew, he decides to leave his island without a second thought, not even bringing his sick father the medicine. A shipwreck leaves them all stranded, and Davor is sent to find help. After wandering for a bit, he finds a house where something magical happens. While there, he encounters a powerful figure with a staff and feels the need to follow him. After some time Davor becomes his apprentice, but there are some perils. Will Davor ever overcome his obstacles? Can Davor ever make it home?

    Opinion:
    J. G. Harlond wrote a great book filled with action and adventure, but it had a magical and mythological side as well. The author incorporated the theme of being an outsider and finding a place that feels like home. I was kind of on the fence about this book. The book was very slow-paced to start, but as the book progressed and Davor got deeper into the magical side, I started enjoying it more. I especially liked it when Davor stole the cursed ring from a troll. Davor was kind of down-to-earth, which I liked.

I also enjoyed the addition of Norse mythologies to this book.

This story was definitely unique, and I can't really compare this book to any others that I have read. I would recommend this book to ages 12 and up because there were some parts of the book that were hard to understand.

    I enjoyed the book

This hugely entertaining tale will appeal to those who enjoy the likes of The Hobbit and The Chronicles of Narnia. Based on Viking legends, Davor is a reluctant young adventurer who embarks on a journey which turns into a quest. Directed by the inscrutable traveller Master Odo, and accompanied by a Wolf, Davor encounters all manner of odd events and dangerous situations. The story is cleverly told and there is great depth to the characters, particularly Davor who, just like the sword in the title, is forged with considerable skill. An exciting adventure in the best tradition with a wonderful cast of princes, dragons, dwarves - and of course treasure!
This fabulous story will enchant older children and adults alike. I wholly recommend it.

The unsung Volsung; a gripping new take on an old story. Made me want to rush off a-viking with my wolf and my magic sword but, as in the best adventures, the real tests of character aren’t always what they seem. Sometimes, facing up to your destiny is a lonely slog. Perfect for pre-teen readers but parents - and grandparents - like me will enjoy it too.

Makes you want to fight your own dragon and discover who you really are.

This is a rich adventure story that is packed full of great storytelling. After boarding a dragon ship in the hopes of great and exciting times Davor finds himself stranded with only a wily wolf to keep him company. With a few trickster encounters and other challenges Davor is once again facing challenges that even his own inventive mind would have found possible. He must secure the fabled sword and kill the dragon, something he feels little prepared for initially. A wonderful tale that will sure to capture hearts as well as the imagination.

Ms Harlond's first novel for children is an exciting story about a young man called Davor. She puts her vivid imagination to work using the old Norse myths and weaves a new story of heroes and legends. Davor has to face Herculean challenges before he can find the Doomsong Sword and slay the dragon. Although aimed at young adults, this traditional tale of good versus evil will captivate all ages.

What an amazing book this is. It's based on tales from the Norse sagas, but somehow the characters feel much less remote. Davor is such an engaging main character and the story is captivating. I just had to keep reading to find out where his adventures would take him next. This might be aimed at children but there is plenty here to satisfy the adult reader because, quite rightly, no compromises are made. There are still plenty of rounded characters, action and adventure, the hint of a love story and believable relationships. Particularly poignant is that between Davor and Wolf, his faithful companion. I was able to believe in all the magic and I loved the clever way this book's plot developed. I simply can't fault it. The author is a natural storyteller.

I bought The Doomsong Sword for my 12-year-old nephew, a keen reader. Twenty-four hours after it arrived he was already a quarter of the way through it and said he 'really, really liked it.' From him, that's five stars. Now I just have to buy another copy for myself!
