The Glow Up (Franklin U Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,926 ratings

Chris Delaney

I've promised myself that this was going to be the year to finally buckle down. I'm a junior, and I’ve settled on a major. I've got focus and determination. The one thing I haven't figured out yet? How to deal with the massive crush I've been harboring on the guy in study carrel six.

I don’t know his name and some of my friends think it’s time for me to move on, but he has this whole sexy, broody, dark eyes and messy hair thing going for him. And yeah, he seems like he could be my polar opposite. The kind of unapproachable, serious type who doesn’t smile much, but I’d like to think he’s all rays of sunshine underneath his stormy expressions and disheveled demeanor. All that intense energy… I dig it.

I want to know him.

The rub?

I’ll have to find the courage to actually introduce myself.

Aiden Russo

The college experience is supposed to be parties, drinking, and fun with a few classes mixed in. It sounds pretty amazing, right? For me, it turned out to be endless lectures, avalanches of homework, and copious amounts of caffeine. The study carrel might as well be my dorm room. And that guitar under my bed? It's got two years of dust growing on it. But this is the life I have to lead if I’m ever going to help my dad.

Pre-med isn’t for the weak.

The problem? Loneliness holds me hostage.

If only I could find someone willing to break through my ever-present cloud bank, and remind me what it’s like to have fun again.

A simple love story but nothing extra-ordinary
Well, unfortunately this won't be my favourite of the Franklin U series. This was my first book from the author and to be honest the style didn't catch my attention. The Glow Up is a simple love story between two college boys. It does not have any interesting tropes, it's sweet in its simple, very much ordinary self. Two boys, Chris and Aiden, one crushing from afar on the other, have their awkward meet-cute in a massage session. After that, fate decides to push them together and they begin their sweet journey towards their forever. Chris is a nice guy with a huge heart and Aiden is the broody one with a lot of baggage. And Chris decides to help him find himself and escape his prison he created for himself in doing a degree he doesn't enjoy. The musical aspect of the story was cute and powerful, I loved how they connected through songs and playing the guitar together. However, it really was too simple and I was bored halfway through because of the lack of any kind of angst. And because the plot was kinda flat it felt like more smut than an actual full on interesting read. Which is not a bad thing, I just don't enjoy these types of books. The last 15% of the book I actually found interesting but it was not enough to make up for the previous 85%. I had times when I though I'm going to just put this book down and start something new. Overall, it was an ordinary college love story with very little angst and very much heat. If you just want a sweet romance without much of anything heavy, this one's for you.

Oh I love this book! I know it’ll be one of my favorite rereads, too. I have fallen in love with 5 of this author’s books, and now 6. She writes in a way that just pulls you in, and takes you on an adventure of romance that melts your heart. I think that’s what I love most about A M Johnson’s writing, the romance. You can just feel the characters falling in love, seeing the big and the smallest things that they touch the others hearts with. Heavy sigh.....

Chris has been noticing and crushing on quiet Aiden for two whole years, ever since he first saw him their freshman year. Chris is handsome and popular, but incredibly shy when he sees Aiden every day at the same study desk on the third floor. He makes a point to always get water refills from that water fountain, just so he can see Aiden again, always trying to find a way to approach him without looking like an idiot. The few times he almost made it to him to break the ice, something happens to stop him. Or he just clams up and/or loses his nerve, or the opportune moment. Aiden studies every moment of the entire day, not because he’s a brainy student, but because he isn’t. He’s on scholarships to pay for his college and is Pre-Med, so must get good grades in order to keep his scholarships. No way to cover costs otherwise. He’s trying to become a doctor, psychiatrist actually, in order to have a lucrative career. He has been the caretaker in the family of he and his father since he was 15, when his mother ran off with another man to Switzerland, leaving his father in shambles. And him motherless. His father started drinking and never could really stop. He is constantly starting new jobs only to lose them the same way, his drinking. Keeps saying he’s done, quitting drinking and then is all excited when he gets new job, but of course he loses that one too. This is Aiden’s driving force, to help his Dad, pay his bills and get him real help.

Chris and Aiden finally accidentally meet, twice, and Chris at last knows the name of who he’s been calling “Science Guy” for 2 years. So happy and more infatuated than ever, Chris finally asks Aiden to have a drink with him. Aiden doesn’t have a spare minute in his days for anything at all, but is instantly and strongly attracted to Chris and surprises himself by saying he will have coffee with him. That’s all Chris needs, and he is thrilled. This begins the beautiful story of two sweet, intelligent guys who you get to see falling in love with humor, and a shared love of music. Both play guitar and like the same bands. I loved every single page of this very moving story. And bonus was excellent editing! No typos, wrong or missing words, which seems like I’m seeing more and more of lately. This just takes me out of the stories and ruins the flow for me. Just sloppy, and rushed. I love all of A M Johnson’s stories. They grab you by the heartstrings and take you on a journey. And leave you with warm fuzzies, without any saccharine mushy crap. And always professionally proofread, no distractions pulling you out of the story. Witnessing two lone souls find each other and fall in love is a trip you can take again and again; some rereads never get old. I highly recommend this very touching story.

“The Glow Up” is book five in the Franklin U series and my first book by A.M. Johnson. I have to say, I loved every second of it. Amanda wrote such an endearingly sweet book. It’s all about first love, finding yourself, and figuring out the right path in life. Chris and Aiden are the sweetest couple and I was overjoyed when they got their HEA.

Chris has had a crush on Aiden, whose name he doesn’t actually know at first, for two years. He’s never spoken to him, yet he still pines for him. Aiden is stressed to the max trying to keep up with his school work. He studies hard, worries about his dad, and barely has any time to do any of the fun things that make up the quintessential college life.

Chris is curious if the two will ever actually speak and is shocked and delighted when Aiden shows up at the massage school that he is fulfilling clinic hours at. Aiden becomes uncomfortable after having a natural reaction to Chris’s massage and leaves flustered. The pair bump into each other again at the greenhouse that Chris works at and unexpectedly become friends. Their friendship quickly transitions to romance, and eventually a relationship.

The connection between Aiden and Chris is so authentic and unadulterated; it’s really beautiful to witness. Chris smooths out the anxious edges in Aiden’s life and Aiden gives Chris a chance to replace fantasy with reality. Getting to know one another brightens up both of their lives. Music is a huge part of this novel and solidifies the harmonious bond between both MCs. There’s so much depth of emotion in this book. It was wonderful to see Aiden spending Thanksgiving break at home with Chris and his moms. Even though there’s a moment of concern near the end of that trip that causes just over a monthlong separation, the pair hold on to one another. So their reunion is even sweeter when they perform at Open Mic night on December 30th.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the epilogue jumped seven years into the future. It was heartwarming and amazingly tender. I really loved reading this book. The dialogue was top notch, the cast of characters fantastic, and the pacing was great. I’m looking forward to reading other titles by A.M. Johnson. Of course, I’m also looking forward to book six in the Franklin U series!

Contains: fluffy, adorable characters, college crush, finding themselves, cute couple, music lovers.

As I'm trying to write this reviews, I'm finding it difficult to put it in a category. Two gay dude, college student, a 2yr crush on a stranger, a struggling student with his degree and his life, a stoner (believing in holistic and love message) who makes two degree,a shy extrovert crushing on a stranger. Let's see how all these items will make this book the ideal recipe for a moment of pure happiness, an awesome book!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and real romance about college boys falling in love
Reviewed in Spain on June 19, 2023
This was my first time reading the author, and it will definitely not be the last one.

This story was cute af and I understand why everyone is so in love with these two. They are sweet. They are real. They are young guys trying to find their place and helping each other on the way.

Aiden hasn't had it easy. Since his mom left his dad and him, his dad has been on a downhill: depression, too much alcohol... He took the responsibility of taking care of him. And so, he decides to study premed to become a psychiatrist and help him get better.

But what means being in university? He doesn't have they stereotypical college lifestyle, he's not a party animal, doesn't have many friends nor free time to just live his life. He's too worried about passing the tests and actually being smart enough to graduate.

He knows he's not happy, but he only truly realizes to what extent when he meets Chris.

Chris is the exact opposite. Well, he isn't a party animal either, but he has plenty of friends, likes to spend good times with them while making time for himself. Also, he doesn't feel bad over changing majors, since he's well aware of what he wants to do and doesn't mind to follow his own path.

Chris's crush was cute and the two of them just work. They are adorable and sweet together, and their story is beautiful and realistic. You can actually picture them being normal college students trying to survive another day, another subject.

I loved how low angst this was. No unnecessary dramas, no weird miscommunication, no forced situations. Just them getting to know each other and falling in love.

I liked the author's style and I will def read her again soon (can't wait to read Ron's book, even though it's not even out yet).

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, chilled guy soothes uptight pre-med student!
Reviewed in Australia on November 16, 2024
Ever since he started college, Chris Delaney has crushed on “broody science guy” (aka Aiden Russo). They finally meet when Aiden reluctantly seeks a massage at the clinic Chris works in, only it ends very awkwardly. Aiden puts himself under a lot of pressure, trying to study pre-med in the hope of becoming a psychiatrist who can help his struggling father, but he’s barely scraping by academically and he has no social life. Aiden is drawn to Chris who always seems relaxed and happy, but can he afford to be distracted from his studies?

“We lost ourselves in the song like we had all the nights we’d stayed up sitting on his bed, laughing when we’d f*** it up, and soaring when we got it right. Tonight we were flying higher than we ever had before. We were in sync, his crisp tones mixing with my low rough tenor in a way that belonged to the music … to us.”

What is it about AM Johnson’s writing, it’s always so lyrical and warm! I loved these characters: I felt Aidan’s unsettled angst and misguided loyalty to his father, I admired Chris’s chilled vibe, and I loved how the boys bonded over their guitar playing. I also liked that there was no ‘big miscommunication’ or last minute falling out—just a difficult situation the guys had to navigate. 🎧 Voice actor legends Michael Crouch (as Chris) and Teddy Hamilton (as Aiden) were, of course, perfect on the audio, I couldn’t have been happier!!
