The Goblin Twins Kindle Edition
Twin goblin princes Shi’chen and A’bbni Er-Ha’sen did not ever plan to take the Emperor’s throne. Older twin Shi’chen is a military prodigy, and younger twin A’bbni is studying to be a physician. But when their father attempts and fails to overthrow their cousin, the murderous crown prince, the brothers are accused of taking part in a rebellion they know nothing about.
Forced to flee for their lives, the twins find that not everything is what it seems in the goblin empire of Hanenea’a. With the help of only a half-elf sailor and a handful of nobles, the brothers must confront the Emperor and his supporters, risking everyone they love for one chance to save it all.
The Goblin Twins is a debut m/m non-magic fantasy novel with romance from Kit Barrie.
This is the first book of The Goblin Twins duology, and the first of a collection of stories set in the lands of Hanenea’a and Kendarin. It has all the angst but does have a Happy For Now ending with no cliff-hanger. It does not contain twincest.

About the author

Kit Barrie (she/her) was raised by pirates in a traveling carnival where she learned how to fly and to weave fantasy into reality. She identifies as chaotic bisexual, with good intentions and questionable methods. She lives in an utterly unfantastical state in the Midwestern United States with some food goblins who might just be cats gobblin’ food.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2023It’s shocking to me that Kit is a first time author. The world building is so complex and unique. She also doesn’t front load it in such a way that would pull the audience to sleep, but gives it to us in tidbits as she tells her story.
I think one of my favorite things about this is that we get the story from the alternate perceive of the goblin twins Shi’chen and A’bbni instead of the romantic interests. It’s been a long time since I’ve read alternating perspectives that didn’t focus solely on the love interested and I am here for it. The twins are the main characters and it shows.
The novel is full of political intrigue and plots and trauma. I loved all of that, but my favorite part is the way Kit develops the relationships. There is a clear bond between Shi’chen and A’bbni who are identical but very different in personality. Shi’chen is a warrior and A’bbni is an intellectual. They lean on each other’s strengths through the novel. Once the conflict Ramos up in their kingdom (and I mean it really hits it—mind the TWs), they escape certain death and meet several side characters, the most important of which is Lai. Lai is a half-elf/half-human who first befriends Shi’chen before meeting A’bbni later in the book.
There are three individual relationships in the book. The platonic-familial bond between Shi’chen and A’bbni, the friendship bond between Shi’chen and Lai, and the romantic bond between A’bbni and Lai. The jealousy is not glossed over. It’s hard for each of them in different ways to have their “person” be close with their other “person.” I also love that we’ve got Aro/Ace rep in Shi’chen who is described as not experiencing attraction.
The politics and fights are done really well in a way that makes sense. It’s also cool that there is no magic that allows the characters to into-escape from things. They have to use their wits and strengths every time. I can’t wait to see what happens in book two!
4.5 Stars, low-medium spice, some swoon, lots of external angst (it’s a political thriller after all). Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2023I heard about this book in a romance group and you should definitely know (and the author even warns in advance) that this is fantasy with romance. I loved the relationship between the brothers (not romantic between them) and thought hard topics like SA were dealt with very tastefully and realistically. This was definitely worth the read! (Also, very pretty cover!)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024Really hoped for more out of this book. Seemed flat & shallow even dealing with very heavy themes. The brothers seemed too naive and innocent which seems weird since they each had specialties but they just seemed to cry and wring their hands. Forced myself to read to 70%, but I'm giving up now.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2023This book had me on such an emotional rollercoaster that my dog was worried when I would suddenly start crying while reading. What the author put those poor kids through would have broken anyone, but the twins has each other, as well as a friend they meet while on the run. In my experience working with children who have been traumatized, I could see very realistic responses in the twins.
The twins are well developed with distinct personalities and appearances, not treated as a unit with them completely identical as many people fall into. Each reacts to the deal the author drags them through in a very realistic way. The "stronger" one gets stuff done, then worries about everything later. The "sensitive intellectual one" tries to be strong, but retreats into his mind when things get too intense, then breaks down later. And how they gradually change through the book is great.
I loved the writing style, a well crafted blend of description, action, and dialogue. The world building was quite fascinating. I am definitely going to have to read more by this talented author.
NOTE: Although the protagonists are young, not yet adults, this book is NOT for children. It contains fairly graphic descriptions of murder, torture, and sexual abuse, and also explicit romantic sex scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 20234.5 rounded up. To preface, I am not a big fantasy reader. I would rather stick to contemporary and jump outside of that genre very rarely.
The cover for The Goblin Twins was what made me want to read it(yes, I judged a book by its cover). It’s so intricate and colorful and beautiful. So that aside, when I started the book, it was a little hard to get into, as I had to adjust my expectations from contemporary to fantasy. But when I got into it, I really enjoyed it.
The contrast between the twins was great. You could tell who was who and could almost anticipate how they would react in a certain situation, which in my opinion in great writing and kept me engaged in the plot.
I did want a bit more from En’Shea and his motives, but I know as a reader you can’t have everything you want and it didn’t take away from the story for me.
Overall, a good book that I would recommend for anyone who loves fantasy or will genre hop on over.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2022I've always pictured goblins as being short gnarly little guys, but that is not the case in Kit's world!
This is an amazing adventure with fully developed characters and world building. A lot of fantasy novels bog you down in the beginning trying to explain the entire world, but Kit manages to give you everything you need to know as you need it. She never just dumped endless paragraphs of description you won't need anytime soon, but instead let that flow seamlessly with the story.
I liked the romance in the book, but I especially liked that it wasn't the whole story.
If you want a light fluffy romance, skip this book. But, if you want political intrigue, drama & action, dark trauma, loving & caring relationships, and even a brief appearance of a cute kitten then Kit Barrie's debut novel is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding first novel
Well Kit Barrie says that she thought she should go big or go home. She doesn’t need to go home. Coming out of the writing gate swinging, she has written an outstanding first novel with marvelous world building and terrific characters. Everything is perfect in this novel for me except for the fact that the second part isn’t written yet and I want to know what happens. However it does end in a HFN and the big problems concluded. When you start the book there is a whole section on how to pronounce the names etc. Don’t be intimidated lol. I just ignored it and had no trouble figuring things out. One of the things I want to comment on is the names because they are very different from most common names and yet they are easy to understand and keep separate which is a harder thing to create as a writer than people would realize. Having read a lot of fantasy where I had to have notes in the back that I would have to keep marked and keep referring to I commend Ms. Barrie on her development of this whole society and making it not only believable but understandable. I absolutely fell in love with these characters and their situations and I hope that Ms. Barrie has a long and healthy writing life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives Depend On Them.
MM, Dark, Fantasy with Romance. Easy to read page-turner, fantastic world building with lots of information given (I have to admit to glossing over the glossary due to information overload), but the story was still engaging with twists and turns throughout. The first book and a HFN ending.
