The Golden Widows: On opposing side ... Elysabeth Woodville and Kate Neville (Isolde Martyn Medieval Novels) Kindle Edition
What lies in store for two beautiful young widows of war…
England, 1461
As sister to Warwick the Kingmaker and cousin to the new young King Edward IV, Kate Neville finds herself on the winning side of the latest bloody battle of the Wars of the Roses — and under pressure to marry again.
Kate’s family want to ensure her new husband will be someone they control, but Kate is refusing. The nobleman they have in mind for her has a reputation as a womaniser and she wants a man who won’t betray her like her first husband did.
Can she thwart her brother’s plans for her?
Elysabeth Woodville is a beautiful young woman, much adored by her husband, Sir John Grey. But when he is killed in battle on the losing side and named as a traitor, his estate is seized by the Yorkists and Elysabeth finds herself penniless and friendless.
In her desperate struggle to restore her sons’ inheritance, she finds herself not only kneeling before her enemy but winning his heart.
Is she is too proud to become his mistress? Or does the King of England love her enough to ignore his friends’ advice and make her his queen?
In the precarious peace of a bloody civil war, can two strong, independent women find a love that will heal all wounds?
THE GOLDEN WIDOWS is a compelling and romantic historic novel set in late Medieval England.
‘Wonderful storytelling … rich and fascinating detail’ — Anna Jacobs, author of Threepenny Dreams
‘Another well-researched and lovely page turner from award-winning historical novelist Isolde Martyn’ — Felicity Pulman, author of Ghost Boy

About the author

Visiting the Tower of London when she was eight, Londoner Isolde Martyn fell in love with history and by fourteen was determined to become a historical novelist. An Honours degree in History with specialization in the Yorkist Era gave her a solid grounding in research. After meeting a rather charming geologist at a bus stop in her graduation year, she somehow ended up in Perth and then Sydney, working in academia and publishing. Before taking up writing fiction full-time, she edited the 'Motoring Guide to Australia', 'Foods that Harm, Foods that Heal' and 'How to Fix Just About Anything' for Reader's Digest General Books.
Isolde's debut novel, THE MAIDEN AND THE UNICORN, won the Rita Award for 'Best First Novel' in the USA and her first two books won the R*BY [Romantic Book of the Year Award] in Australia.
More recently, Isolde's novels have focused on real historical people: Mistress Shore; Katherine Neville, Lady Hastings; Queen Elizabeth Woodville; and Harry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham. She is now the author of eight historical novels and these are are being republished by Sapere Books, UK. First off the rank are THE LADY AND THE UNICORN and THE SILVER BRIDE.
Sapere are also publishing her ninth novel, set in late Elizabethan England,
Isolde is a former chair of the NSW Richard III Society and a co-founder and currently Chair of the Plantagenet History Society of Australia. She is based in Sydney and has a garden frequented by three water dragons and a family of owls.
And yes, Bus Stop Day is still a celebration!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2015As I am an American, English history is not a subject I studied and thus the characters reality was unknown to me. although the book was well written, characters were clear and true to form; I was disappointed. Too much of the story evolved around the romancing of the reluctant 19 yr old widow, the kingmakers sister. Lord Hastings who in this book comes across with her as warm and passionate, a true hero. Yet with the other widow he is cold and calculating. I wanted more of the other widows story, the one who lost her love, and her wealth and with out her strong family would have been a beggar. Its rather amazing that she caught the king. I doubt this is anywhere near the truth, and as a story it fails to deliver. there is too much about an 19 yr old widows desire for a faithful man. and I doubt that was an issue in the 1400's, with arranged marriages more the norm. I had to flip though a lot of pages of the youthful dribble. I would rather have read about the other widow who had to struggle to overcome what life dealt her. The story of survival is always more interesting and tells a better lesson, than the one of " let me talk you into taking a silver platter".
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI always know if Edward iv is in a book to have high expectations of his charm. And boy was I not disappointed. But I do wish there was more about Kate Neville I really enjoyed her character.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2015I have read many books about this period of history, but this one gives an unusual perspective. It is refreshing to look at Elizabeth Woodville's life before she became queen. It is entirely new to me to be informed about a sister of Warwick the Kingmaker. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the War of the Roses!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2015The story was fascinating and well researched. I didn't want to put it down. My biggest disappointment was some current day slang was used in the dialogue. I doubt that anyone in the 15th century used the term "hey" or "friggin". I don't understand why an author of this caliber who obviously did some meticulous research would resort to such common errors as modern day slang. That's why I lowered my star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just loved this book as it lets you see the women ...
I just loved this book as it lets you see the women as the main characters and the 1400s was a pretty violent century. I also have a few more books to read already lined up to keep me occupied. great reading and could't wait to see how it all turned out

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is another brilliant book in the series. I've read them all. This book talks about the life of Lady Elizabeth Woodville and Lady Kate Neville. The period is when King Edward IV has won the throne, which leaves poor Elizabeth very poorly off, struggling against her mother-in-law for an income. Kate is struggling to get the rights to the Harrington lands. Then Edward IV falls madly in love with Elizabeth.
Martyn captures the period beautifully. You feel like you're in the book, she's such a good writer. I couldn't put this down but that's how I feel about all of Martyn's books.
