The Harder We Fall Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 294 ratings

For years, I’ve been bound by sleeplessness and sorrow. His voice threatens to set me free.

Insomnia. It’s the penance I pay for my greatest mistake. But when an ill-timed doze behind the wheel almost introduces me to a pole, I know something has to change.

Sleep with Me, a locally-made meditation app, promises a cure. I don’t expect it to work. Nor do I expect to be seduced by the voice of its creator, Sam.

Night after night, he gets inside my head. Coaxing me. Manipulating me. The situation becomes intolerable and I decide to meet the man I’ve been ‘sleeping’ with. I must own his secrets – before he ends up owning me.

In person, the quiet and reclusive Sam is his own kind of complicated. He needs my help as much as I need his, and we form an unlikely partnership.

It’s only business. It can’t be more. Even if Sam refuses to deny the pull between us. Even if my need to get closer is more than my guilty conscience will allow.

I have no right to love, not after the damage I’ve done. How can I give Sam all he deserves, when our chance at a happy ending was ruined before we even met?

The Harder We Fall is a high angst, hurt/comfort MM Romance by Australian author, Rebecca Raine. It will put you through the emotional wringer before leaving you with a hopeful smile on your face. HEA guaranteed.

Trigger Warning: This book deals with issues of long-term complicated grief over the death of a loved one. Angst level: High.

This is the first book in a very long time that I officially say I have two new book boyfriends, Sam and Tristan! Their chemistry and sexual tension was off the charts." -

Beautifully written, utterly heartbreaking
I recieved this book in exchange of an honest review! Thank you the the author and GRR for providing me a copy!I've been putting reading this book away for a long time. Just reading the synopsis made me feel a lot of deep emotions and I just knew it will be a heartwrenching experience. And I was not wrong. In The Harder We Fall we have a man, Tristan struggling with sleeping problems due to a past that hunts him always and we have another man, Sam with deep routed anxiety issues who tries to help people with meditation.Tristan discovers Sam through a friend's recommendation and the app helping people fall asleep changes his life. He want to know more of the man behind the voice. So after that they start a quid pro quo arrangment where Sam tries to help Tristan get through his pain while Tristan provides a solution to Sam's business problems in a way that won't overwhelm the man. And they slowly fall for each other. The characters in this book were extraordinary. The way their problems, trauma and hurt were described made me feel their every emotion so deep that I cried multiple times. Tristan is the one who has deeper and more traumatic issues to deal with and I absolutely loved that the book showed the process of healing. With help, yes, but also alone as getting rid of past hurts cannot be achieved by leaning on someone as a crutch all the time. Sam's anxiety was another challange they needed to work around. And in his case again the other man showed the way but Sam was the one who worked hard and consciously to get better and achieve his goals, conquer his fears. The story was utterly heartbreaking in its entirity! Slowly seeing into the past to discover all the traumatic thing that made them how they are today, especially Tristan was written in a soul-shattering way. I felt everything! The grief, the guilt, the despair was all their basically jumping from the pages and to my heart to destroy me just a littley just for a little while. As I mentioned before I sobbed loudly at times reading about the heartbreaking, dark despair of a man and his family. And I sobbed again during his healing process! Dealing with grief is something very close to my heart so it touched me on another level! I had to sometimes put down the book to gather myslef and be able to read more. This book was beautifully written, with flowing conversations, dramatic feelings and a captivating healing process. The author managed to get my feelings for this book pour out through my eyes and I am so so happy that I had the chance to read this book!Highly recommend!

Tristan is a successful businessman who suffers from chronic insomnia and has to figure out how to sleep before he endangers himself or someone else. Enter Sam, a man who is a master of meditation but suffers from social anxiety disorder and needs help with his business. Some quid pro quo seems to be in order... this book had me completely captivated - I couldn’t put it down. Beautifully written, incredibly moving with 2 broken men who need each other so much. Lovely and perfect.

I enjoyed a lot of the relationship growth, even when I rolled my eyes at Tristan’s therapist-style advice to Sam while he was self-flagellating every day. Having Tristan finally realize what an a$$hole he’d been was fairly believable but using rather facile apologies from his thoughtless, cruel parents as convenient catalysts for sudden change just made my eyes roll harder. The story came across as the ol’ magic peen as a cure-all trope.

One finds courage and the other finds peace…Both men are bothered by their own insecurities but the origins are very different.
Tristan has been plagued with insomnia for over eight long years. He’s tried everything. A coworker’s wife suggests he try an app made by her “meditation guru” named Sam. Thing is, Siren Sam’s voice does the trick. Maybe a little too well because that voice makes him horny. Now he wants to get to sleep w/o that melodic voice. Why? Why won’t he allow himself this bit of reprieve? What penance does he need to perform?
Their stories will hurt your heart. Tristan’s meditation memory in Chapter 20 will bring tears to your eyes. And, Sam’s early years will make you angry and sad for him. Not to fear, a beautiful ending is ahead. Many things are resolved. Two imperfect guys find near perfection with each other.
This story has so much depth but I don’t want to ruin it for you by giving away anymore. If you like sweet, poignant and steamy (some) M/M romance, read this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of THE HARDER WE FALL through Gay Romance Reviews and I loved it!

So. Although I own a couple books by this author, I had never read one of hers before. I turned in another KU book and this one popped up as a recommendation and the cover and blurb intrigued me enough to jump my rather long TBR list and start The Harder We Fall. I’m so glad I took the chance on this fantastic find! Both of the MCs were damaged, although I felt like Sam’s inner voice was lifted directly from my head, so I related to him much more than I did to Tristan’s trauma. I love, love, LOVE the fact that they were both broken and difficult, but instead of following the overused temporary break-up plot at 80% like so many other authors do, Rebecca Raine allows her characters to be grown-up adults and work through their issues and miscommunications without unnecessary drama.
I’m about to binge read everything I can from this author since I was so delightfully surprised by this read!

Good story…good journey! Sam is a meditation expert and a borderline agoraphobic. Tristan struggles with insomnia and is basically a shell of a person. You wouldn’t think they would be good for each other with each having overwhelming kind of issues, but they really are good together and it was a joy to read how they worked; how they grew to love; and how they made each others’ lives more fulfilling. Really good story!

I found this book being recommended in a book group. Grabbed it as it looked interesting. But I didn’t expect to blow me awAy the way it did! The writing was beautiful and the angst hit just right. I loved how organic the main characters got together. Loved their emotional struggles and triumph. A thoroughly enjoyable book, one that I will definitely reread over and over.

Tristan and Sam have each suffered emotional trauma related to the loss of loved ones. Tristan finds Sam serendipitously, and each agrees to help the other with his challenge...Tristan gets help for his insomnia, Sam for his agoraphobia. Their love journey is not without its challenges and setbacks, and each man has to recognize and face his fears head-on before he can achieve his HEA. They hurt each other and themselves, but they find redemption in honest communication, and Tristan even finds his way back from the estrangement that the loss of his sister caused between himself and his parents. That plot point was a little too easily resolved, though it can be argued that neither Tristan nor his parents ever managed to do the adult thing and talk to each other for so long that many unfortunate assumptions were held as truth for eight years.

I enjoyed Sam and Tristan’s story. I was invested to find out why their pasts made them the way they were. They both had their emotional scars that helped them understand each other. This is an at times emotional love story. There are definitely sexy scenes as well.

Now this... this was a GOOD book. A REALLY GOOD BOOK. A Great one! I laughed, I smiled, I cried. This book took me through it at times but it was so good..

Tristan and Sam are so different, and in this case thats what attracts them together. They both need each others help and so they strike up a deal until they both realize they want more. Tristan’s past is dark, and while Sam has some past issues as well his wasn’t as heart wrenching. I felt so sad for Tristan and felt his pain. No spoilers here but get ready for the waterworks.

I liked them together. They brought each other out of their shell, and were happy sweet and hot when they a couple. The story though sad at times was near perfect, though I did not like how Sam acted near the end with the whole interview... despite that, this was a really solid story and i enjoyed it so 5 stars!

This was most definitely a five star read. A beautifully and sensitively written story about two very damaged men. Tristan and Sam who were learning to cope with life in their own very different ways each finding strength in the other.

The dialogue was wonderful, the writer drew you in and you could feel the pain and anxiety felt by both men and also Tristan’s parents who were caught up in their son’s mental anguish.

These men had to work very hard for their HEA but it was truly deserved. This book made me cry but I also found it uplifting and thank you Rebecca Raine for the lovely ending❤️

Such a beautiful and sensitively written story about two MCs who have their own pain to overcome in their lives. It’s not easy for either of them to trust others but slowly they begin a process, as a transaction, which eventually allows them to help each other. I love this book, this journey with it’s wonderful hea and I highly recommend it❤️
