Worse, he soon finds himself at the center of some very unwelcome attention, the shadow of a killer's crosshairs hanging over him. Nor is he the only one to awaken a dormant killer as Hendricks finds out the hard way that he’s set events in motion that he can’t control.

The deeper Evan gets drawn into the case, the worse the betrayal at its core becomes, until once more he's forced to take up the reluctant mantle of hanging judge, his fate to decide who should pay and who will walk free.

    After a pause in reading books in this series, I was thrilled to be back enjoying the misadventures of Evan Buckley. All the mainstay characters, with the exception of Newcomb and Ryder, played a role in this latest escapade. This current mystery/thriller tied nicely back to past story lines, but also moved Evan's life forward in some surprising and pleasing ways. The characteristic humor and intrigue were well incorporated in this book, as were Evan's ongoing paternal ties to Crow and the romantic ones with Guillory. The pathos was well balanced as always with the various twists and turns leading the reader to some satisfactory closure. But one was left with a wish to know what is next for Mr. Buckley and his swashbuckling ways.

    The title, The Judas Gate, by author, James Harper, makes a person think they know "whodunit", but.... The ending is a surprise.
    The past comes back to haunt Evan. Carl Hendricks, the monster whom Evan put behind bars for committing terrible crimes, is dying, but will only speak to Evan to confess another crime. Evan had his doubts and events prove him right. Twists and turns abound. If your an Evan Buckley fan or if this is your first book about him, I know you will enjoy reading this mystery thriller.

    I was so excited about another Evan Buckley mystery and, as usual, Harper delivers a great story, building on the previous books.

    I rarely have any complaints about this series, but in this instance I got frustrated in the first chapters. The quality of the writing and the storytelling is always first rate. However, I was a total blank at the beginning when they talked about a 13 yr old event that Harper based the story on. I'm old, I guess, but I didn't want to wade back through the books to find it, and it was several chapters in before I got references that made sense to me. It is still a great read, and I finished it in a couple of days. I just got stressed at trying to figure out what was going on.

    If you love a good mystery, you can't go wrong with James Harper's Evan Buckley thrillers. I look forward to the next book.

    I started reading this series when I was offered a free copy of the first novel introducing Evan Buckley to the world. Being a fan of the genre, I happily accepted the invitation and quickly realised that I would be reading more. Sure enough, as soon as I had finished reading it, I ordered the next two in the series and I am now in the position of having read all of the Evan Buckley novels. I love the way that the characters continue to evolve and reappear to add further depth to the realism of the thread that ultimately binds them all together. Just when you think a door has closed on a chapter in Evan’s life, someone or something silently slips in through it because he forgot he has left it open. He is an enigmatic mix of stupidity, stubbornness, tenacity and guile, interlaced with courage and compassion. Sometimes saint, sometimes sinner, he is always captivating and enticing. He is like salted caramel, it shouldn’t work but it does! Of all the novels, the ending of this one took me completely by surprise. It will be interesting to find out if the crescendo that has been the hallmark of this character throughout the entire series continues to grow. More power to your keyboard Mr. Harper, may your imagination never diminish, may your audience grow evermore. Thank you for a great series. To write one novel that can’t be put down is quite an achievement. How do you describe it when there are 16 on the bounce? Incredible!!
