The Ladderman: A supernatural horror novella Kindle Edition
“Creepy as hell” Reader review
Ladies of Fiction Horror Best Novella runner up in 2019
_______________
Eeny, meeny, miny, mo… who will be the next to go?
After a hotel worker recites a seemingly harmless rhyme, no one predicts the terror that follows…
Rik Slater and his friends dismiss the urban legend as nothing more than a spooky tale. But they soon find out how wrong they are when their casual game of rock-paper-scissors turns into a deadly game they never meant to play.
As his friends die in grotesque ways, Rik’s in a race against time to convince the police about the supernatural force and break the curse before it's too late.
What happens when it's the Ladderman's turn?
With every tick of the clock, he draws nearer.
Will Rik outwit this malevolent entity... Or will be playtime over?

About the author

Angela Archer is a British author who writes sci-fi, technothrillers, and horror—sometimes all at once—packed with sarcasm, dark humour, and just enough existential dread to keep things interesting.
When not dreaming up new ways to torment fictional characters, she wrangles two small humans, drinks excessive amounts of tea, and takes out her frustrations on the hockey pitch (in a completely legal, sportsmanlike manner).

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUrban legends have been done a lot. But coming up with an unusual one with s different set up gave this novella enough uniqueness. And, the fact that the whole thing was creepy as hell.

The Ladderman is a Fast Paced Mysterious Horror Urban Legend Thriller. Filled with Interesting Characters and Gruesome Murders,Bloody Mayhem, and the unknown lurking around every corner to devour. "A Mustread."
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2020Format: KindleAngela Archer’s horror/urban legend novella The Ladderman is a quick read–about an hour or so. It’s hard to build up enough suspense and tension in that kind of space, especially when we’re talking multiple deaths. Catherine Palmer is a hotel caterer who makes the mistake of reading out loud the Ladderman rhyme when she comes across it. Her death is not the last that this peaceful little town will experience. Friends Rik, Kev, and Will also invoke the rhyme while out drinking, and a mysterious force goes after them one by one.
The manner of death is connected in some way to a game each person played–something that will only marginally make more sense once the origins of the Ladderman are explored. It seems a bit of a stretch, and also fairly silly.
That said, I like the character of Rik and how he handles all of this. He used to live in the city and was stabbed, and the police did a terrible job of trying to catch the culprit. So he’s loath to involve them–yet he tries to do so, because he’s afraid he may be the next to die and he doesn’t know how to stop it. He has a lot to lose, too, because his wife Becky is pregnant.
I don’t think this book is genuinely trying to be humorous horror, which is a shame, because it’s so close to the line that if it had been pushed over it might have been interesting. (Or if it had backed off further from the line–it just doesn’t seem to be entirely certain what it wants to be.) A fun little diversion, at any rate.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019Format: KindleRenovations at a hotel bring forth a supernatural force that hates cheaters...
After hearing of a murder that just happened that some people believed a local legend named "The Ladderman" was involved in, a group of friends out drinking jokingly say the rhyme that brings him forth. When his friends start dying afterward, Rik realizes its all real.
He's already suffering from having been stabbed before the events of the story and his fear and insecurities are a constant in the book. With a pregnant wife to worry about as well, the curse goes after him. This is slowly revealed and expanded on as the story goes and feels authentic instead of just dumping exposition on the reader.
He's always shown as being meek and a bit weak, but I suppose he is still also driven to do the right thing and figure out what to do about the Ladderman. The rest of the book's characters aren't done in nearly as much detail as him but he's a great enough character to make up for them.
As for the Ladderman himself, he's basically an unstoppable force that stalks and kills the characters. He appears once in the beginning, but then usually just shows up as an invisible menace. He's done incredibly well and his kill scenes are pretty gruesome. When I picked this I thought how vicious could someone named The Ladderman be? Turns out, pretty vicious.
The story is well written, and a lot of details make into each sentence. I always enjoy it when the little things are described well. All the characters were likable and don't really do anything stupid like how these things often go. It has the horror and gore you'd want, a great main character, and it all moves to a satisfying conclusion.
