Editorial Reviews

Review

“Fantastic – suspenseful and historically fascinating... Gerard Fox could be Jack Reacher's ancestor, 700 years ago. Highly recommended!'” ―Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Better Off Dead

“The authors make splendid use of such medieval-plot standbys as a castle with secret tunnels, plague-riddled vagabonds, a grand tournament, a priceless manuscript, and duplicitous churchmen as the action ranges from Canterbury to Paris and elsewhere in France and finally Italy. But the novel's real strength is its antagonists: Isabel's ruthless fiancé, the Earl of Tonbridge; the power-hungry Cardinal Dominic Molyneux; and, best of all, the cardinal's sociopathic son, Basquin... Historical fiction fans will eagerly await the couple's further adventures” ―
Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Fourteenth-century Europe, devastated by the plague and beset by the warring armies of England and France, offers another turbulent fictional setting. But the knight-errant at the center of Boyd and Beth Morrison's rollicking adventure is a fittingly valiant paragon of chivalric virtue. Early on, while rescuing a damsel very much in distress, Gerard Fox explains that his personal story is "full of murder, intrigue and treachery of the worst sort." As well as the occasional jolt of inappropriately modern chat ("I'm not the only one who is on to you") that's best ignored while surrendering to the inventive twists and turns of a satisfyingly bustling plot. Fox is a medieval action hero, tussling with not one but three villains, along with platoons of knights and hangers-on” ―
New York Times

“A compulsively readable, immersive tale of chivalric adventure and dangerous romance in a war-torn, plague-stricken Europe. Readers will relish the twists and turns of the plot, thrilling to a chase that gallops across lawless lands, winds through treacherous labyrinths, and risks all in mortal combat as the daring hero and heroine strive to save themselves and their imperiled world. A hugely entertaining historical novel!” ―Eric Jager, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Duel

“A simply riveting action/adventure novel... The stuff of which blockbuster movies are made,
The Lawless Land will leave its enthusiastic readers looking eagerly toward the next installment in this entertaining saga of knight Gerard Fox” ―Midwest Book Review

“A winning combination of author and expert medievalist... Thoroughly enjoyable” ―
Historical Novel Society

“A fantastic start to a brilliant new adventure series that you won't want to miss. The brother/sister team of Boyd and Beth Morrison brings the Middle Ages to life in vivid detail with historical authenticity and a sense of fun. Packed with murder, love, betrayal, twists, epic battles, secret passages, and duels to the death, this thriller has it all!” ―Graham Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fast Ice

“A thoroughly entertaining tale that I found to be exceedingly well told. In their first collaboration, they have crafted a novel full of both authenticity and thrills, and readers are sure to clamor for more from this writing duo” ―Mark Greaney, New York Times #1 bestselling author of The Gray Man

“A gallant knight, a witty heroine, a quest for the ages... The Morrisons have created a thrilling medieval adventure packed with fascinating historical detail.
The Lawless Land combines the rich historical tapestry of Umberto Eco and the relentless pace and adventure of Clive Cussler into a brilliant new series. I can't wait to see where Fox goes next!” ―J.T. Ellison, New York Times bestselling author of Her Dark Lies

“A love story that grips you right from the start... Absolutely fascinating and it really epitomises the violence, chivalry and, of course, the power of the elite” ―
Bishop's Stortford Independent

Reading this exciting book is like finding yourself in the middle of an Errol Flynn movie (think “Captain Blood” or “Robin Hood”). Rocketing from one life-threatening adventure to the next, Sir Gerard Fox and “Lady Isabel” move from grudging respect to admiration and, finally, to cherish each other. The reader comes to feel the same way about these well-developed, lovable characters. At the same time, the “bad guys” are truly evil, miscreants you love to hate. There are backstories galore explaining behavior both virtuous and wicked, plot twists you never see coming, and brilliant descriptions of even mundane things that bring them to life (the protective mail for a knight and his horse, weapons, women’s clothing, customs during The Plague, etc.). While the characters do not speak in “dialect” - this is not Shakespeare or Chaucer - that’s a good thing. Their more modern language use doesn’t require “translation” and provides no distraction from a rip-snortin’ story. Clearly well researched and written with flair to keep you on the edge of your seat, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Please tell me there’ll be a sequel!

"The Lawless Land" starts off fast and races across Europe in the time of the Black Death and The Hundred Years War. At every turn, it's brave hero and fetching heroine outwit, out-fight, and outrun their adversaries until the climactic battle at the end.

I think the book it's most like is "The DaVinci Code," because it too was a breathless race from one death-defying escape after another. If you want to know how thrillers are written, this is how it's done.

This is an entertaining read. A good old fashion adventure.
I read Barbara Tuchman’s “Calamitous Fourteenth Century” around forty years ago (still have it on my bookshelf). I was intrigued by that strange time of corruption in the royalty and the church, and I am still amazed at the way that corrupted and unchecked power can destroy civilizations.
    Then came the Black Death.
Tuchman’s book was in my mind as I read this unrelenting, fast paced novel. The characters are likable, or despicable to a palpable degree. Heroes, villains, and romance. I had a hard time putting the book down, as each chapter took the plot up a notch (Boyd’s thriller background influence I would guess); I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.

This book was a very fun read. Keeps you on your toes every chapter. Personally, I’m not a big fan of long chapters, I don’t like stopping in the middle of them if I don’t have time to finish. The chapters in this book are a perfect length in my opinion 5-12 pages ish depending. That said, I never wanted to put this book down, I finished it in just under a week and I enjoyed every second. Action packed, lots of very lovable and very hateable characters. All around great read for anyone, especially if you love medieval history!

The historical background is accurate and the plot is suitable for young teens, but adults might find it somewhat formulaic.

Enjoyed the storyline & assortment of characters in this well written/researched historical fiction in the mid-1300s. Has it all: knights, jousts, beautiful damsels in distress, fiendish villains who never give up.

I've read all of Boyd Morrison's books, so was intrigued with this different background for this tale. I'll admit, I was glad I was on Kindle, as I was looking up a lot of vocabulary specific to middle ages, and learned a lot. Loved the characters, very well developed. The action moves along at a rapid pace. So delighted that Boyd and sister Beth chose to collaborate on this. It makes for a very interesting read. Can't wait for the next in the series. There is going to be a series, right? Well worth your reading time for pure enjoyment.

It could have been a good read, but was spoiled by repeated excerpts from the timeline appearing in the middle of the story. There were far too many casual encounters between the fugitives and there pursuers that seemed unlikely or just unlucky. Better plot management and more believable scenarios would’ve helped. Maybe a bit of editorial help would’ve picked these things up.
