- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2025At first I couldn’t see how the lives of these women would come together but I loved how this story was told. I did wonder if the two women in modern day realized how much of Bridget was actually in them…they too were brave in ways I don’t think they realized!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2025The novel masterfully weaves a tapestry of interconnected lives, transcending geographical boundaries with its global perspective. While the narrative structure echoes the author's previous work, exploring the nuanced connections between Ireland and America, the story occasionally becomes encumbered by political commentary that slightly detracts from the rich character development. Despite this minor critique, the book offers a compelling exploration of human relationships across diverse cultural landscapes.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024I liked the stories in this book as told from two different times and from three different perspectives. However, I did have some trouble at first remembering who the characters were and how they were related to the stories.
I appreciate reading about life in Ireland during the potato famine and about the hardships and victories of those who found it necessary to leave their home country. As always, though, I found there was too much consumption of alcoholic beverages, but at least the author addressed the problems this caused for one character and for her family.
This author is very good at character development and at making the characters believable. I have read two of her books so far and have another one waiting on my Kindle for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2025I enjoyed this book and could barely put it down. It helped me through a rough time in my life, by helping me to understand people have survived real trauma, making my troubles seem small in comparison. Well written novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024It told the stories slightly difficult to follow, but very interesting. The facts given do jive with comments made by my mother-in-law as to what went on in Ireland and why they came to the U.S.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2022I'll echo several other reviewers: Of course I knew about the Great Potato Famine, but I didn't know what it would have been like for families to try their best to eek out an existence as the problem stretched into years. That viewpoint was interesting, and reading things like that always make me so glad that I earn a good living and that I live in a country where no one needs to be hungry.
First, the characters. Characters are everything in a novel, and these do not disappoint. This idea of balancing multiple protagonists in different places /time periods isn't exactly unique any more, but this novel really does it well. The characters are all equal and tremendously interesting -- they are people I'd like to know.
The story line is engaging, and it contains enough twists to keep you guessing. At times the story is genuinely cruel, and it's made worse in that we know these things really happened to real people.
The novelist's writing is excellent. Her style is enjoyable, and the reader is able to slip between the words to lose him or herself in the story.
I highly recommend this novel!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2025It was easy to get confused by the characters in the story. It was hard to keep track in which character was in relation to the story. The story is intriguing but the narrative was too drawn out. The book could have been half the pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2025I also don't critique books. I read strictly for pleasure. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book by switching back and fourth with the characters. We don't have a clue how people suffered throughout those Un hard times. We wonder why so many people emigrated to different countries, my grandparents included. Very interesting book. Kudos to you for writing it and for your dedicated research Rachael.

5.0 out of 5 stars History, and hardships on immigrants
Great read. Kept me interested and good insight into the severity of Irelands famine in the 1800s, and the heartbreaking decisions to be made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best book I’ve read in ages!
What an absolutely brilliant read! It drew me in from the word go and I could not put it down! Loved the two timelines and also how the story linked up for both the girls who were tracing their family history from their homes in Ireland and Boston in America. In fact it had three different stories going on and both the present day girls had their problems which is why they both decide to trace the history of an Irish ancestor who is more or less forced to seek a new life in America! This part of the story is just so sad and I actually sobbed my heart out! The character was an amazing woman and I loved her. Very well written and easy to read. Obviously very well researched by the author as the story from the past was so believable and also so very emotional. A very sad time in history that I did not know much about bearing in mind my own paternal grandmother was Irish. So loved this book. Will look for more from this author. Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story.
Good story but written more like a documentary towards the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written and worth reading
Warm human interest story with a suspenseful twist. I found this story connecting with my life. It was at once warm, thought provoking and intriguing. Most definitely kept my interest and made it hard to put down.
The only disappointment in the story for me was that the mother and daughter were never physically reunited.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
The Letter Home is a fascinating and enthralling novel set in several eras about a variety of different members of the same family in Ireland and Boston. The story starts in the 1800’s in Clooneven Ireland during the famine where no help was offered and up to a quarter of the population died from starvation and illness. In modern day Ireland, Jessie returns home to her family and begins researching her family tree, at the same time Kaitlin is doing the same thing in Boston.
This is a heartbreaking novel with a healthy dose of humour that is based in fact. The theme of migration runs through it as well as the hardships suffered throughout the centuries by those who feel they have no option but to leave home. It surpassed my expectations and I am looking forward to reading more books by Rachael English.
