The Menu (The Alcrest Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

A missing young man. A woman’s body found in a back alley. Could the two be the connected? Enter the Alcrests. Spencer – the handsome chef and owner of The Alcrest Gastropub who’s struggling to keep the restaurant going and Chrys – his gorgeous and stupidly courageous foster sister who’s often blind to consequences.

Chrys dives right into the mystery risking herself, her brother and her co-worker’s lives as she gets them in way over their heads. As they deal with their personal lives they are quickly introduced to a cast of colourful characters – drag queens, terrorists, secret agents and a sadistic murderer with eyes on one of them.

CHRYS ALCREST
She will never admit it, but her mother disappearing when she was 3 and being fostered to the Alcrest family was the best thing to happen to her. The half Aboriginal beauty lives her life the way she wants it. Server at The Alcrest, dance instructor...and Chrys is always in search of the next adventure whether it be in her personal life or something more. Smart, sexy, curious, fearless, foul-mouthed and often wild are the best ways to describe her. Chrys Alcrest has a yearning to solve whatever mystery comes along until she gets to that one solution which has plagued her for her entire life.

SPENCER ALCREST
Chef and owner of The Alcrest Gastropub, Spencer Alcrest has done his best to continue the legacy started by his father. He went to culinary school with big dreams of chef stardom only to return home to transform the family pub into something bigger. Beleaguered by inner fears of commitment and his foster-sister's antics Spencer struggles to keep the business in the black while keeping himself and his sister alive.

THE ALCREST GASTROPUB
With a constantly changing menu, depending on what is available from local purveyors, The Alcrest is a blast of flavor and excitement. With the open kitchen design customers are wowed by sauté pans exploding in balls of fire. A meeting place for local artisan groups it also features local entertainment on the weekends. The occasional headless body in the oven or homicides on its doorsteps should be overlooked . The fantastic food, family drama and employee antics by far make up for the murder, mystery and mayhem.

Language warning: This novel involves characters in the restaurant industry. There are swear words. I'm sorry if that is not your thing. Have a nice day.

Lorne Oliver (1974-)Was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

His writing journey started at the age of ten because of Mrs. Staples, a great school librarian, and something called The Young Authors Club. Because of his love of Sherlock Holmes stories he started writing short mysteries and then Lorne changed to romance from a male perspective. He enjoyed books written by the likes of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity and Karen Brichoux's Coffee and Kung Fu.

While in PEI, thanks to his wife, Lorne had the opportunity to interview several members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It gave him the chance to write a story based on the idea he had for a long time of showing the officer chasing down a serial killer while letting the reader see how a little kid could grow up to be a monster. That is done, but there are more monsters that need to speak.

When Luke Weston disappears from his home, the Alcrest siblings are asked to discretely investigate. Chrysanthemum is on board with the idea, but Spencer, still recovering from the damage of their last adventure, is reluctant to get involved. He is focused on getting the reputation of the Gastropub back up, and he tells Chrys that, since she is not a cop, she shouldn't get involved. This doesn't stop her, and she quickly figures out that Luke's disappearance is a lot more complicated than it seems. This plunges the Alcrests into another mystery that's full of mistaken identities, a dangerous mob group, and the realization that food isn't the only thing on the Menu.

Join the Alcrest siblings on another great adventure! This book has all the thrills that we've come to expect when Spencer and Chrys are involved, and the twist at the end is just a delightful bonus. The characters are dynamic and work well with each other, the settings and situations are well described, and the dialogue is spot-on. There's also a few moral dilemmas hidden throughout the story, and you watch the characters grow as they face the challenge of making the right choice.

I don't really have any technical complaints about this book, save for a few places that may read a bit choppy, and I thought that the whole thing was very well done. I give it a 4 of 5, and I would love to see what the author comes up with next!

My first Alcrest Mystery..and I definitely want to read the others! ! What an adventure this author takes you on..emotional and realistic feelings are played out so well..his description of the restaurant kitchen is so perfect that I could smell the food coming.. and the brother and sister banter is what I have seen in real life.. The surprise of the revealing information from the Sister. .Chrys..to her brother Spencer to help him and his girlfriend Jessie get over an emotional bump in their relationship adds to the information on Chrys and Spencer 's relationship. .even though Chrys is a "Foster " sister the family ties are blood strong !! And so is Chrys's ability to get involved in Mystery and Murder.. You will love the twists and turns and getting to know all the characters in this story..and the ending will surprise you.. I can't wait for the next book in this series. . Now I'm off to read the previous one.. get your copy today!

Another great read. Although this book didn't catch my interest as quickly as The Cistern it was still a great story and hard to put down. Chrys and Spencer are amazing characters but I like how more of the Alcrest's employees became more involved in solving the mystery. Again a very great book Lorne, now on to The Pass.

Crys and Spencer could easily be anyone of us, they're characters you can easily identify with.... But to have to go through what they have is mind numbing but very exciting.... I love living vicariously through the characters in this book.... Never a dull moment

Great Mystery! The Alcrest Family and friends have grown with the introduction of new characters. Lorne has done a great job describing the characters and settings and makes the reader feel like they are there in the story. The Menu has a good balance of mystery, love, and lies! Great read Lorne!
