The Reluctant Alpha: West Coast Wolves, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,643 ratings

“As much as I felt bad for this Elisha person - God, my heart was breaking for the young man and all he'd been through - I was also angry. I'd left that pack in my rearview 10 years ago for a good reason.”

Matthias Longclaw is happy living his life on the back of his beloved Harley with his five best friends and brothers-in-arms at his side. The West Coast Wolves are a rare pack of alphas, made up of unwanted orphans and second-born sons. The packs they were born to may not have wanted them, but they’ve built a solid family of their own. They help where they can, doing random acts of kindness and expecting nothing in return, just helping to build a world they want to live in.

Then Matt gets a call from an old childhood buddy. He’s being called back - begged to return - to reclaim his birthright and save a life in the process. The problem is...to do it, he will have to take a mate. And if he refuses? The omega will die.

Torn between his duty to help others and his resentment of his old pack, Matt never expects for Elisha Whitetail to tilt his world and change everything. Can Matt and Elisha rebuild a broken pack while tending to a new love and a growing family while dealing with outside threats from neighboring packs

They’re wolves. Strong, proud, and willing to do what it takes when their community needs them...whatever it takes.

This is the first in a new mpreg series about finding joy in a hard world, building family, and discovering that life can surprise a person when they least expect it. Although this world has harsher themes than my previous books, it still has the same heart you’d expect. Plus a dose of my irreverent humor and all the naughty, knotty heat that comes with true mates. It wouldn’t be a Susi Hawke book without it. Be sure to listen to the author's note at the beginning for possible trigger warnings.

This is the first in a new series by Susi Hawke and what a start!

This book is jam packed with excitement, rescues, wolf fights and love. In book 1, we meet the alphas of The West Coast Pack, who live on their bikes and go where they are needed to right wrongs and help those in need. Matt receives a call from his ex home pack with news that changes his life forever.

Elisha has been through hell as a stolen and abused omega and now, it seems, will die and take his innocent child with him. When Matt makes it just as he’s almost gone, his only chance at saving Elisha’s life is the unthinkable, a mating bite not consented to. Luckily, for both men, they are fated mates and now that they’ve found each other, they have to save the pack from outside forces. Matt never wanted to lead a pack like his father did, intolerant and biased against anyone not alpha or useful. Now is his chance to make changes, if the pack will accept him.

While helping Matt is an easy decision for his West Coast pack mates, they get pulled into the rebuilding and fighting and find themselves in places they never expected, as alphas of their own packs. I’m really looking forward to the next books where we get to know these men and their packs while they work with Matt and Elisha to build a better world for all of the wolves.

I go to Susi Hawke's books when I want something light that makes me feel good. This one claims to be a bit grittier and darker. It is, kind of, but it's still very much in Susi's style. When I think of Susi, I think of the Hollydale omegas. Super light, lots of fun and laughter and sweet relationships. Here, she tackles a universe where omegas are second class citizens and viewed as possessions to be bred, packs never have more than two alphas (only an alpha and his successor), city dwelling packs invading others to take over their territory and the nonconsensual claiming of a dying omega. So, yeah, darker themes but even in a darker setting, her characters retain that softness and lightness that she's known for. Matt and Elisha realize right away that they're fated mates, Elisha forgives Matt for claiming him and they work together to save/restore the pack. If you're looking for something really dark and gritty, this isn't for you. If you want a Susi Hawke book with something a little different, give it a shot. I enjoyed it.

Delightful new series has me hooked!   Wonderful world-building with some new dynamics, roles and ideas on Alphas, Betas, Onegas, Deltas and Epsilons.  I loved the characters as i read the book.

I really enjoyed the band of Alpha's and how and why they rode together.  Their friendship and brotherhood was an anomaly in this new universe and I am looking forward to seeing this author explore more of the many opportunities for culture shifts and exploring new cultural norms.  Five strong alpha friends with a story just waiting to be told.

This is book one of the West Coast Wolves and i read and enjoyed and now i have listened and loved the story even more!

I had to wait until all of these stories were available before I could begin reading the series, because I always seem to binge read this authors work! Lol! This story was a fantastic beginning for the series, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here. I'm loving the WCW crew, as well as all of the other characters, and can't wait for each of them to find their own HEA's.
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.

I am an avid fan of Susi's/Susan's. I've fallen in love with almost all of her characters.
But this book was a polite mess of average-ness.
    Bit of a spoiler:
Everything was so 'Utopian' - the MCs, side characters, heck - even the protaganist wasn't heard from at all until the alpha challenge, and it was just immature trash talk.
The alpha challenge was over in a snap around the middle of the book.
Matt was supposed to be adorably sweet, and it seemed as if the author tried to make it so, but he just came across as cocky and too perfect. I didn't feel that much heat between he and Elisha like I have with other characters in past books. Yeah, they were sweet and sappy, but there's been no unrest between them. The few times it got close, one of them would cave. As for actual steamy scenes, there were a few, but again, I just wasn't feeling the vibe between the MCs. Most of it was off page for anyone who wants to know.
The book is mainly about rebuilding a community and all of the steps that go into it. It seemed to me that most of the book was about that. A few mentions of this and that would have been fine, but I feel as if it was ongoing. I'm not Bob Villa - or "Tim the Toolman Taylor" from that sitcom way back when.
I'm only at 80% and I will finish it simply because it's Susi. But I've found myself yawning and getting distracted.
I'm glad others are truly enjoying it, and I will check out the next book, just in case there's the intensity of the usual Susi Hawke creation.

Five alpha wolves have formed their own pack when one if them, Matt gets a phone call that calls him home to save the life of a dying omega. Matt finds out in the ten years he has been gone, his uncle killed his father and has run the pack into the ground kidnapped the omega and was killed by the omega's father. Without being claimed by another alpha the pregnant omega will die within three days. Matt claims and saves the life of Eli, only to discover that they are true mates. Matt and his four alpha friends set about saving the pack then finding packs of their own. It is an exciting, dangerous and loving book and I will read every future addition.

Great start to anew series by Susi, we meet Matthias Longclaw, Matt to his friends, he walked away from his pack and abusive father at 18, to travel the west coast of with a pack of Alpha wolves and his best friends.

An urgent call from back home has him returning after many years away, to save a dying abused omega Elisha and to take his rightful place as Alpha of his old childhood pack.

Matt has to fight to prove his place and his true love to his fated mate.

This book is well written as we expect from Susi, we meet some fantastic new characters, there's Love, pain, hurt, comfort, violence and mpreg. Seriously we get everything from this book. It kept me enthralled from start to finish. Can't wait for more books in this series.
