The Rum and The Fox (The Regency Romance Mysteries Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 796 ratings

From the author of the exciting series Rogues & Gentlemen comes a new Regency Romance Series - The Regency Romance Mysteries

Miss Keziah Todd is desperate
Surely the daughter of a viscount, even an impoverished one, ought to be able to live, just a little? But her father, Viscount Rennard, is a violent man, and one that is hard to thwart as he harshly restricts Keziah's society. When Keziah learns of her father's plans to marry the recently widowed and fabulously wealthy, Duchess of Chartley, it doesn't take the lovely Miss Todd long to realise that the woman's only son, Felix - the new Duke of Chartley, is an inconvenience that her father will remove with haste.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A nice change of pace very much enjoyed this book - it was not the typical romance where a strong, but jaded Duke rushes in and saves the damsel in distress. The book combined a Duke's coming of age, a desperate young woman, and a murder mystery. A nice change of pace. - Amazon Customer

A mild mannered duke Felix might be a pink of the ton, but feisty Keziah believes he has more hair than wit and is no match for her cunning father. Unable to live with the good-natured duke’s death on her conscience, Keziah takes a risk, and Felix's life in her hands.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Really enjoyed this book.A Duke who was not a dashing hero figure but a young man of good looks and integrity. Ash is rich and rather a dandy but when it comes to protecting those he loves his strength of character comes through. Abuse and killing is not his way and when a young abused noble woman comes to him with news of a plot to kill him and harm his family he is drawn into a world of vicious greed. Interesting read a wonderful conclusion.= Amazon Customer

• Book 1: Dying for a Duke
• Book 2: A Dog in a Doublet
• Book 3: The Rum and The Fox

Warning! This book contains a feisty heroine and a nefarious criminal or two. You may happen upon some strong language as well as a few intimate scenes. Enjoy!

I adored Keziah. She was such a strong character who endured a lifetime of abuse and misery. She was brave and resilient and because of her Ash found strength to be more courageous. Beautiful ending!

I really struggled with whether to rate this a 3 (probably deserved for the many mistakes that no serious Regency writer should make) or a 4 (for a delightful story and wonderful characters).

The well-paced, imaginative story and great cast of characters seemed more important in the end, so I've rated it 4 stars.

I looked up the author, and although she's written many Regency stories, she's also been successful in other genres, and I admire her for that. I just don't understand the mistakes, such as calling the heroine "Lady Todd" when it should have been "Miss Todd". This, and a number of similar mistakes, were very annoying - especially since I read (and loved) the first two books in this series. I don't remember these types of mistakes in those books. Perhaps this one was written first. Ms. Leech, please consider updating this book to fix these glaring mistakes! Beyond these problems with titles and addressing people with titles, the editing was generally okay, with missing commas in compound sentences, but the epilogue seemed to be unedited with strange repetitions.

Anyway, if you love a great story/mystery with an unusual Hero, then give this story a try!

Had me from the first page. This is truly a page turner. I hadn't figured out the complex mystery until the last chapter. Loved the story about an ordinary man who loved his family. No great bear of a man that everyone feared; one who defeated all who questioned him. Ash was quiet, respectful not a daring rake, how rewarding to view a true hero that went against stereotyping. Ash was a complex character, but his love of Keziah made the story so throughly rewarding. The grandmother gave the story another dimension. Now, I want a story about young Maggie and the Major's son. Really, let's get this book on audible I'm ready.

I like Leech's stories--plots and characterization interesting and so on--BUT she makes me crazy with easily-researched errors. For example--in this book, the unmarried daughter of a viscount should be addressed as Miss and not as Lady. And a woman (daughter of an earl, marquis, or duke) with the courtesy title is addressed or referred to as Lady Firstname, never as Lady Lastname unless she is married to Lord Lastname. And "Herrico" is actually spelled "haricot" and is not a method of cooking beef but a type of bean. And it's "hartshorn," not "heartshorn." And if a man holds a title....oh, Ms Leech, please get a reference book--you are making quite nice novels difficult to read.

Ease review the ranking of the aristocracy. A Duke should never be referred to as lord. He is always referred to as 'Your Grace' or 'the Duke of -'. If he has a lesser title of Lord -, he is still referred to as the highest rank he has. Miss Todd should have been referred to as 'Duchess of Asheford' or 'Her Grace' when they came home. Please check your references. The author has a wonderful style and lively characters; I would buy all of her books. Just ease check your rankings.

Inspector Formby has another murder to solve.
Keziah is the daughter of a Viscount, but does not lead a privileged life, as her father is a selfish violent man who leeches off others. Keziah has nothing, frequently goes hungry and is regularly beaten by the Viscount. She dreams of a big strong hero coming to save her.
“Ash” the Duke of Chartley is a handsome young man, kind and thoughtful. Unlike the previous dukes, he isn’t over six feet tall. He can’t fence, shoot and has never had a fight in his life but he always dresses impeccably, his hair is perfect, he helps his sister and mother with their clothes shopping, and is a master at tying a cravat. A bit of a dandy.
The two come together when Keziah overhears her father plotting to kill Ash, and she goes to warn him. Then her father is murdered.
Over the course of the book Keziah learns that a hero does not necessarily come in the form of a gladiator and Ash learns that he does not have to be like his father and grandfather to be a worthy duke.
Emma does it yet again. She brings us characters that are always that little bit different and less than perfect and I never fail to be drawn into her stories.
Each book of this series can be read as a stand alone - they just have the inspector in common, and I for one am hoping we have not seen the last of him and that he will re-appear from time to time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not one of Emma’s best books.
Reviewed in Canada on December 16, 2020
The story starts off with a bang and instead of staying interesting, the plot gets bogged down with mundane filler. There was very little in the way of character development and the instant love between Keziah and Ash seemed a bit far fetched. The story does contain an interesting mystery and some suspense to keep the reader entertained but the majority of the book was just boring. One character who ends up being very important to the plot, is called one name at the beginning of the story and something completely different by the end. The epilogue was sweet but definitely in need of editing. Overall, not the author’s best work. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT STORY A PAGE TURNER - NOT THE TYPE OF HERO I LIKE PREFERRED HERO'S IN BOOKS ONE AND TWO
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 27, 2020
Ash (Felix) I could not form an opinion of him. He was not a strong character, more concerned about his clothes , also his mannerisms, his total lack of masculinity, The only time I felt I was warming to him was on the wedding night, where you saw a bit of a man you could be attracted to, he took care of Keziah.

Keziah terrible life, had more courage and personality than Ash did .
Good story trying to solve the murders, lots of twists and turns.
The epilogue ten years in the future where the children discuss hero's and monsters was a great explanation.
THAT BEING SAID I PERSONALLY LIKE THE MEN IN THE BOOK TO BE STRONG, THAT'S JUST ME AFTER ALL I LOOSE MYSELF IN THESE.

Another corker from Emma Leech. The twists and in this tale kept me on the edge of my seat and some truly horrifying characters had their comeuppance! A beautiful romance interwoven with the mystery too. Love the eventual ending. My only question is what happens to the inspector?! Hoping there is more to come in this series!
