The Therapist: A Novel Hardcover – July 13, 2021
The multimillion-copy New York Times bestselling author B.A. Paris returns to her heartland of gripping psychological suspense in The Therapist―a powerful tale of a house that holds a shocking secret.
When Alice and Leo move into a newly renovated house in The Circle, a gated community of exclusive houses, it is everything they’ve dreamed of. But appearances can be deceptive…
As Alice is getting to know her neighbours, she discovers a devastating secret about her new home, and begins to feel a strong connection with Nina, the therapist who lived there before.
Alice becomes obsessed with trying to piece together what happened two years before. But no one wants to talk about it. Her neighbors are keeping secrets and things are not as perfect as they seem…

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have enjoyed books by B.A. Paris and this one didn't disappoint. The vulnerability of a person is shown.
Alice and Leo short term relationship takes a huge step and moves to a gated community. So much is unraveled with the flaws in the relationship. Trust is becoming hard and second guessing puts strain on the relationship. Can Alice come to terms with all the lies and deceit she is getting.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe premise of this book was interesting, and the twist was a good ending, but my god, Alice is the most annoying protagonist ever. She makes all the stupid decisions you yell at horror movie characters not to do, invents realities that don’t make sense, and is so annoyingly obsessed with this murder because her dead sister shares the same name…it makes zero sense. I do t want to give anything away, but suffice it to say I yelled at her, in my head and out loud, many, many times for being so annoying and stupid, and it made it hard to like the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow …… a must read! Loved the switch and turns!! I felt I was living this story and glad I wasn’t at the same time.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story gave me the absolute chills. As soon as I knew it was about a woman moving into another person’s house who had been murdered there, I was like, ok, you’re asking for trouble. To top it off, it’s a house in a tight community where the neighbors are all up in each other’s business and they are not quite embracing our protagonist on move-in day.
Alice is not a therapist, but a therapist did once live in the house, and we come to learn that she was murdered in her house. Alice and her partner, who is protective, it’s not yet clear why, have moved to London so that he won’t have to commute for his job, and they can spend more time together. She wants to make friends straight off with the new neighbors and he is not exactly warm to her plans.
Quickly realizing that the ladies of The Circle, yes, their little gated enclave has a name, are super chummy with one another and the welcome wagon has not been rolled out, it’s going to take much more effort to break into their group.
If Alice could let go of her obsession with the therapist’s murder, when the case has been closed and everyone has already moved on, it’s no wonder they aren’t eager to befriend this busybody.
THE THERAPIST brings look over your shoulder, look under the bed, leave the light on kind of scary-haunted vibes and lies, lies, lies. In other words, a psychological thriller that does the job it is intended to do.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI haven’t read a fiction book in YEARS, but had wanted to get out of my digital scrolling habit. I had read this is an attention grabber and gave it a shot. I couldn’t put it down and read the whole book in one day! It has some really great twists and turns and I was not able to predict the ending, which is good! Right before the end, it felt a little chaotic and probably could have ended a tad sooner, but overall I really enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Review for The Therapist
A psychological thriller, very dramatic, starts of slow and quickens towards the end - this book is a highly entertaining and a very engaging read.
I absolutely adored how the author has depicted each of her characters as extremely flawed and has highlighted the terrible issues in relationships that stem from lack of trust.
