The Unquiet Dead: An Angel & Kincade Mystery (Angel & Kincade Murder Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition
Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead.
When a man is found dead in the New Forest, cold-bloodedly shot in the back as he crawled away from his killer, DI Max Angel and DS Catalina Kincade immediately know they've got something on their hands that might come back to bite them - they're looking at the handiwork of a professional, a man for whom the taking of a human life is nothing more than a job.As they dig deeper, they discover the victim was more than the out-of-work truck driver and part-time drug smuggler he appeared to be. He's been sticking his nose into the business of a man whose ruthlessness is matched only by his greed and moral corruption, trying to get to the bottom of the tragic accident that left his life in ruins and a muck-raking journalist dead.
Meanwhile, the dead man's brother knows more than he's saying. Consumed by rage, he's hell-bent on avenging him in an old-fashioned, eye-for-an-eye sort of way, too blinded by grief to realise he's painting a target onto his own back at the same time as a rogue MI5 agent clears the decks.
And if Angel hasn't got enough to worry about, an innocent favour asked by the forensic pathologist, Isabel Durand, reawakens memories of his darkest days in the Afghan desert, the demons he thought he'd buried forever threatening to overwhelm him just as the investigation takes a very unexpected turn . . .

- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2025The Unquiet Dead is #5 of a series of which I've read only a couple here and there and enjoyed them all. This one is a quick read, personable folk, Intriguing mystery - a fine British police procedural and an interesting addition to the Angel and Kincaid series. Anything by James Harper is going to keep me up much too late. His Evan Buckley series has given me choice entertainment as well as many a sleepless night. This A&K series I want to binge-read start to finish once it is concluded. I hope that will not be anytime soon. I want many more, please.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2025James has hit it out of the park again with this newest outing with Angel and Knicade. I have fallen into hog heaven with this series. It would really be interesting to know why Cat is so catty with the medical examiner and now she's feeling the same situation with Max's former partner. I'm sure these thoughts and more will be revealed along the way. Great book James. Please don't make us wait long for the next book. I received an ARC of this book and the thoughts and opinion of the book are my own.😀
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2025The Unquiet Dead by James Harper is the 5th book in this series. I have read some of the other books in the series so I was familiar with the characters. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I think at lease one other books in the series should also be read first. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book that I found was hard to put down. There are complex plots that make you wonder if they will all pull together by the time you finish. That is way you have to keep reading to the very end. The plot and characters are well developed. They will not leave you guessing and some background information is revealed in this book. I received an advance copy of this book and I always review every book that I read. If you like crime mysteries, then this is for you. You will not be disappointed and you will probably go back and read the other books in this series. Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2025James continues to write books I enjoy reading. In addition to a great standalone storyline, this particular installment helped to better acquaint us with a few of the main characters, which is always welcomed in a book series. Continuing to get to know and understand the characters keeps things fresh and interesting. As always, I would recommend not just this specific book but the entire series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2025In true James Harper style, The Unquiet Dead will capture you and hold you hostage until the last sentence is read. Each book in this Angel and Kincade series has side stories that continue to evolve in each new book. Questions raised and answers given but— Will we learn in this one if Grace is tested for whatever disease she imagines her father has; will Jardine’s brother get sent to prison; will Jardine be disciplined; what will Stuart decide to do regarding Virgil’s offer and how will Max respond to that decision; will Cat stop fighting for custody of her girls instead conceding to the ex and most importantly, will Max start running again after all the pounds his mother is packing on him during her so-called visit ... And then you have the execution style death of a lorry driver. The twists and turns they have take to solve the crime will keep the pages turning. The previous book, Justice Lies Bleeding, moved me to tears. This one had me hoping for a way out for the killer. Hope you read it and hope you love it. I received my copy of the book from the author as a member of his ARC team. This is my honest and sincere review.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2025Another great hit by James, could not stop reading this book, some late nights! The twists and turns definitely keep you tuned in, always wondering what will happen next. I love how all these characters work together, and the banter back and forth between each one. Bringing his former partner back leaves you with many questions, just waiting for those answers. Can't wait for the next one, hope we don't have to wait too long. Side note: Craig Gulliver needs a little side story, everyone else does. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2025Enjoyed this episode of Angel and Kincade. The saga delves deeper into their personal lives, but you still want more. Can’t wait for the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2025This story has a complex plot that deals with some pithy questions that people who deal with death, and the violent side of humanity ask themselves…Even in their attempt to find the truth while investigating. Where is your position in the cause and effect chain, and what does that say about you and how you feel about yourself.
