To Catch a Poisoner: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Mystery Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 692 ratings

When a murderer strikes at the Netherfield ball, can Darcy, Wickham, and Elizabeth work together to catch a poisoner?

Fitzwilliam Darcy and George Wickham were raised almost as brothers, until a terrible truth from their shared past derailed everything. Now, both are in Meryton with a poisoner on the loose. It’s their job to catch the killer, but both men are waist deep in secrets.

Already quite miserable at the Netherfield ball, Elizabeth Bennet has no idea how bad things will get. When Mr. Wickham arrives, sick, disheveled, and with claims that the food is poisoned, he is not the suave and elegant man she admires. But she quickly finds that Mr. Darcy is not who she thought either.

Could it be that both men are better than they seemed?

To Catch a Poisoner is a Pride and Prejudice Variation with both mystery and romance, and is about 68,000 words in length.

Fantastic mystery, so many twists in the changes from canon P&P. I seriously couldn’t put it down.

Yes there is poisonings going on, with utterly tragic and heartbreaking deaths. The story was so much more than strictly about the investigation to find the murderer. That’s what makes a truly good whodunnit, becoming invested in all the characters, easy to do with characters we think we already know. But in this plot there were some surprising changes in characters.

I loved this story. The mystery was really complicated. I never figured it out, though I had strong suspicions. Which were wrong. It is too good to spoil. Just read it please. This writing team keeps topping itself. Brava.

    Highly recommended.

I liked this one! The characters were well done and I loved the character twist in this variation.

My only reasons for not giving it five stars are this -
First, I could definitely tell this was two different writers and occasionally it was a bit jarring; I felt like maybe I had skipped a page or section accidentally.
Second, it sort of almost became darkly comical that despite all of the people dying not a single funeral was ever written in or even mentioned. It was like the dead just disappeared. Not that I needed a lengthy eulogy for every deceased character, but not even a mention? It was just a bit strange.
However I do recommend it, it was a good read and well edited.

I've been reading P&P variations and sequels for nearly a decade now and have enjoyed many works by these two talented authors, but this is a new favorite.

The book is well-written and edited. The plot is original and the characters have dimension. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish. Storylines were well-woven without superfluous rabbit trails or loose ends.

    I highly recommend.

This refreshing take on the pride and prejudice characters keeps the reader's attention.

I loved the mash up of characters being different and their back stories too. The red herring near the beginning got me. But aside from figuring out the who dunnit, eventually, so much of the variation was different and entertaining.

One family in particular paid a heavy price, and there are several poignant scenes peppered throughout.

A great ensemble retelling. The mystery and drama takes front seat to the romance, but couples do find true love.

So by 70%, I had a list of three. The murderer was my top choice, but I wasn't completely sold on that person as the murderer quite yet. But I was very sucked in to this story, and found excuses to not do chores in order to complete it. (Not a great example for the kids, but it is what it is.)

The writing was well done, the editing on top of things, and the storyline different enough yo what I've been reading lately. The plot was exciting and I had great fun trying to suss it out before I was told. If you like romantic mysteries, then I definitely recommend!

In this, Darcy & Elizabeth work with Wickham to find a murderer in Meryton. I have read (and enjoyed!) most everything these authors have written. While there was nothing quite wrong in this story, it just fell flat. There was a lot of repetition of characters’ feelings, none were fully fleshed out, the whole Charlotte subplot was far-fetched, and there was no story development behind Darcy & Elizabeth. It was okay, and though I won’t be rereading it, I will absolutely read the next story by these otherwise exceptional authors.

Another winning variation from this pair. I happen to enjoy mysteries, so this was right up my alley. I thought there was a very nice mix of mystery and romance. I really enjoyed how solving the mystery was a group effort. The interplay between Darcy and Wickham is also well done. Lady Catherine was as full of advice as ever, but with a very different outcome. There were just enough hints that the ending fits without giving away the mystery too early. I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder, grief and love

This is another good book from this duo. A very clever twist takes of the variation off canon, and mass murders see an unlikely coterie investigate. Unlike many of their lighter books, this story doesn’t resile from grief, from avarice and selfishness. Yet it is lightened by humour and by two tender romances.

3.0 out of 5 stars Little connection to Austen
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2024
I’m not entirely sure what I just read. This is an odd book, with not one character recognisable as one of Austen’s, all ploughing through a rather implausible and incoherent plot. I am still wondering how Darcy being deliberately snobbish and awful could possibly persuade a potential French-sympathising poisoner to trust him as an ally, and yet this was at the heart of the plan devised by Colonel Fitzwilliam to capture the poisoner. It’s a bonkers premise. Bonkers. The ‘romance’ (and I use the quotes advisedly) between Darcy and Elizabeth is so slight you have to squint sideways to see it.

This author pair have written some good P&P variations (such as The Widow Elizabeth), but this book doesn’t rank with them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Das war für mich nicht der beste Roman der Autorinnen
Reviewed in Germany on November 22, 2024
