A Toast To Lady Mary: A Life of Mary Wortley Montagu (Doris Leslie Biographical Novels) Kindle Edition

3.2 3.2 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

An evocative historical novel about the life of a pioneering woman! Perfect for fans of Philippa Gregory, Alison Weir, Jean Plaidy and Elizabeth Chadwick.

A woman in a man’s world makes a life-changing discovery … but will the world listen to her?

England, 1716

As a child, strong-willed
Mary Pierrepont was the despair of her father – but her determined spirit is destined to lead her down an extraordinary path.

Though lauded for her beauty, the adult Mary – an intellectual with progressive ideas and a passion for learning – does not fit eighteenth-century society’s blueprint for women. But she meets her match in
Edward Wortley Montagu, a man who shares her zest for adventure, and embarks with him on a life-changing journey.

Bedazzled by the exotic sights of Turkey when her new husband is appointed ambassador there, she sets out to learn as much as she can about her adopted homeland. And when she stumbles upon a vaccine for the cruel disease that stole her beauty, her sojourn takes an unexpected turn…

Mary is passionate about the vaccine, believing it could spare others the same fate. But her risky proposal incenses the medical profession and sparks bitter political controversy. Back home in England, she is subjected to threats and physical attacks – and, worse still, her actions are beginning to corrode her marriage…

Can Mary find a way to be heard? And can Edward’s love withstand the strain of his wife’s new obsession?

And when she resorts to a shocking act, will it cost her everything she holds dear?

A TOAST TO LADY MARY is a thrilling biographical 18th century novel that brings the adventures of this trailblazing woman vividly to life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Flowery rubbish

I was soooooo disappointed with this book.
The author seems to think that, by writing in flowery archaic language, she is painting a more accurate picture of this remarkable lady.
In fact her pompous verbosity covers up the story. If I hadn’t already known about the story of her corset in the harem I wouldn’t have known what was happening.
She does a disservice to this remarkable woman, who deserves to be much better known.
