Think Adam Silvera meets Anthony Horowitz: a YA technothriller that'll have you rooting for Theo as he faces down the bad guys and cheering as he builds a happy relationship with his boyfriend, Eddie." - Gregory Ashe, author of the Hollow Folk series

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2021This review is for the audio version which I received for free. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
This series is a little out of my normal wheelhouse. I read/listen to some YA novels, but they are usually more fantasy or paranormal focused. This is my first foray into a tech-focused, genius teen story, and I really enjoyed it. I have to agree with another reviewer that it seems impossible that Theo could fit his life into only 24 hours a day, and that did pull me out of the story sometimes. Still, once the action started, I completely put those thoughts aside. I loved Theo's cleverness and ingenuity, and the way the adults treated him with respect for his knowledge and ability, but also as the teen he is. I liked that his parents had his best interests at heart, and were honest with him when he asked questions about their organization. Another thing that really struck me was the humanity Theo expressed and his very realistic emotional reactions to his trauma. The physical ones. too. For example, after being beaten and receiving a concussion, he isn't suddenly better and able to play in a scheduled hockey game. He has to sit it out. One thing I found a bit lacking was the MM relationship with Eddie. There is not a lot of info on Eddie and he seems to spend most of his time angry at Theo. (Although he clearly loves him, as evidenced by his actions when Theo is nearly kidnapped). I would have liked to see more of this relationship. Maybe let the reader see them go the prom that is talked about. Eddie's character seemed a little cardboard and not fleshed out. The book is mild on the 'love' scenes as expected for characters who are younger than 18.
All in all, this is an intelligent, suspenseful, dramatic, action-filled listen, and I can't wait for the next audiobook in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2021Wow, Jeff Adams did it! Oh, yes he did! Way out from left field his Codename: Winger young adult series rocked my world! This was the book series that broke a major book hangover and quite so unexpectantly! There's so much to love about this series, I hardly know where to begin! I knew it would be good, these are Jeff Adams's books after all. But I did not expect a young adult series to elicit very real thrills! The Codename: Winger books are geeky sophistication par excellence with fast-paced, rather elaborate narratives ANY reader would be delighted to experience!
In 'Tracker Hacker Book 1', we meet Theo Reese, a sixteen-year-old computer programming prodigy specializing in cybersecurity for the intelligence agency Tactical Operational Support (TOS)! As a result of childhood curiosity, he discovers that his parents are agents of TOS and he is permitted to work as a technical support operative from his bedroom of the relatively safe home he shares with his parents. When an enemy hacker infiltrates the system TOS uses to track all agents, he is stunned to discover that the tracking system was initially designed to control field operatives. When his father becomes one of many operatives that goes missing, Theo is placed squarely in the field to resolve the issue and save his dad from puppet control by the opposition--an agency called Blackbird.
The story has everything one would expect from a great novel: awesome world-building, excellent character development, impeccable pacing (the rate at which the writer introduces key elements in the story), and beautiful balance (the distribution of varying types of elements in the narrative). With respect to character development, the writer shows readers a genuine 16-year-old kid with hockey practice, friends at school, homework, and a boyfriend. His reactions to disappointment, fear, and anger are credible. He cries, wants hugs and reassurance, feels depressed, etc. without the excessive whining that may be realistic for some kids (a totally off-putting for ANY book) but in wholely inappropriate for any teen as intelligent as Theodore Reese! Narrator Kirt Graves delivers an exceptional performance for the audiobook as he captures the very essence of Jeff Adams's super clever teenage computer whiz.
A Very Winger Christmas is a short story included in the (audio)book as a special treat for the readers. After all Theo goes through in 'Tracker Hacker Book 1', he has something special planned for his boyfriend Eddie. In addition to enjoying the Reese family holiday traditions, he has to solve a mysterious hack that may result in an international incident. He does so and manages to have a significant, super sweet time with his boyfriend who is unaware of his status as a special operative for TOS. As a fan of the series, I needed Theo and Eddie to have this memorable Christmas.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2021Young Adult fiction has been a decades-long love affair for me. In recent years I’ve become more interested in stories with a male protagonist. Therefore, ‘Tracker Hacker’ was an easy choice for me when I found it listed with an audiobook ARC group in which I’m a member. I requested this book and am now writing a voluntary review post-listen.
There’s a lot to like in this teen action/adventure story. Sixteen-year-old Theo has a lot of irons in the fire--high school, classes at MIT, hockey, a boyfriend AND the small fact that he works for a secret (non-government) agency. He uses his super-genius computer skills in the non-dangerous capacity of keeping the agency’s computer systems breach-proof. When a counteragency attempts to control his fellow agents through their implanted trackers, Theo must go into the field to circumvent the enemy.
Adams gives readers a nicely complex character with Theo. For only being 16, he’s got a lot of responsibility that he takes (mostly) in stride. He just wants to help people and be a good person. The book offers lots of computer-speak, some great hockey action, a suspenseful field mission and some very adorable scenes with boyfriend Eddie. I think Theo lying to Eddie about his job is a bed idea, but at least Theo does have angst about it. I’m looking forward to finding out if Eddie discovers the truth in future installments.
The Christmas novella serves up more computer/tech action. There’s a super sweet scene with Theo and Eddie. The romance reader in me wants to see more interaction like that between the two in the subsequent books.
This book is my first Kirt Graves narration. I find him to be a talented voice-actor and I’ll be seeking out more from him. Graves’ reading style and tone are perfectly suited to the young adult genre. His performance really brings these characters alive.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage genius secret agent
Brilliant young adult book that has fast paced action. The main character is Theo Reesewho is a hockey playing tech savvy genius, perhaps the perfect mixture of jock and geek.
And a totally nice guy. I suppose you could say an Alex Rider or young James Bond type character but with a focus on cyber security.
The story has a great pace and kept me wanting to know what happens next.
I loved the bonus story of how Winger saves Christmas, very amusing.
Kirt Graves' narration is perfect. Great characterisation of the teenage characters and the adults. He gives the story more depth.
