I was drawn to this story because the heroine Juliette and I share the same first name, a first, and the synopsis sounded quite intriguing. However, I was a bit hesitant when I saw that it was 600 pages. It's actually 587. I'm an impatient reader and I hate verbose authors and superfluous descriptions. I'm extremely glad that I decided to give the book a chance. This turned out to be a mesmerizing and thrilling reading experience. There were a few instances in which there were excessive descriptions of indoor scenery and décor but I either skipped them or briefly scanned them and got back into the heart of this captivating story. The plot may not have been 100% original but the author's interpretation, imagination and creativity made it seem so. The writing was good and provided a vivid view into the characters' world. The character development was good. Juliette wasn't overtly the strongest heroine that I've ever read but she possessed a perseverance, loyalty and quiet strength that I admired. Killian (even his name is wickedly sexy) was simply "nickers wetting" delicious. pardon my language! And his sexy Irish accent was swoon worthy. The sensuality of Killian and Juliette's relationship was what fantasied are made of. The supporting characters were interesting and diverse. One character's demise was particularly saddening. One villain was a bit one dimensional but still believable because even in real life some people choose not to have any redeeming qualities. The story moved along at a good steady pace. I never got bored and for me that's saying a lot. The story was told from a 3rd person or narrative point of view which worked perfectly for the story. There were quite a few twist and turns that maintained my interest throughout my read. It was amazing that this book only cost .99.
As I got further into the story, I surmised that the title "Transcending Darkness" was well conceived and had numerous meanings including a philosophical one. Both Juliette and Killian were attempting to rise above (transcend) their pasts as well as their current circumstances. Moreover, I think that one of the reasons Killian was so inexplicably drawn to Juliette was because darkness is often attracted to the light especially that which radiates from innocence. The result is usually that either one is corrupted by the other or one is transformed/redeemed the other. Some of the story's themes are quite dark but it's definitely not a depressing reading experience. There are quite a few sex/love scenes but they are an intricate part of the plot, well written, and seamlessly interwoven into the fabric of the story. They are also vivid, sensual and provocative. This is definitely for adults and for adults who are NOT offended by explicit sex scenes. This was my first time reading a book by this author but it certainly won't be the last. Enjoy!
