Transylvanian Dinosaurs Hardcover – Illustrated, September 1, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
At the end of the time of the dinosaurs, Transylvania was an island in what was to become southeastern Europe. The island's limited resources affected the size and life histories of its animals, resulting in a local dwarfism. For example, sauropods found on the island measured only six meters long, while their cousins elsewhere grew up to five times larger. Here, David B. Weishampel and Coralia-Maria Jianu present unique evolutionary interpretations of this phenomenon.
The authors bring together the latest information on the fauna, flora, geology, and paleogeography of the region, casting these ancient reptiles in their phylogenetic, paleoecological, and evolutionary contexts. What the authors find is that Transylvanian dinosaurs experienced a range of unpredictable successes as they evolved.
Woven throughout the detailed history and science of these diminutive dinosaurs is the fascinating story of the man who first discovered them, the mysterious twentieth-century paleontologist Franz Baron Nopcsa, whose name is synonymous with Transylvanian dinosaurs. Hailed by some as the father of paleobiology, it was Nopcsa alone who understood the importance of the dinosaur discoveries in Transylvania; their story cannot be told without recounting his.
Transylvanian Dinosaurs strikes an engaging balance between biography and scientific treatise and is sure to capture the imagination of professional paleontologists and amateur dinophiles alike.

Review
―Steve Goddard, History Wire - Where the Past Comes Alive
Transylvanian Dinosaurs is an amazing gem of a book and is sure to capture the imagination of professional paleontologists and amateur dinophiles alike.
―Prehistoric Times
A valuable introduction to the emergence of this isolated vertebrate area.
―Choice
A fine example of something I always try, but rarely succeed, to articulate to colleagues in paleontology, evolutionary biology, and geology who don't work on dinosaurs. Dinosaurs, within the context of their ecosystems and paleogeography, can tell us many neat things about how evolution works over long time scales.
―Stephen Brusatte, Priscum
[The authors] expertly weave together the various, complex sources of scientific information into a rich tapestry that vividly illustrates the story of this region and highlights its importance to our understanding of dinosaur evolution . . . This volume should inspire current and upcoming paleontologists to think more synthetically about the evolutionary and ecological context of the organisms they are studying as well as past worlds we seek to understand.
―Christopher R. Noto, Quarterly Review of Biology
Transylvanian Dinosaurs . . . is well-written, an easy read, and is likely to be popular with both professional and amateur paleontologists.
―Michael Hutchins, MGS Book Reviews
It is rare to find a book on dinosaurs so literate, well-written, and full of insight and synthesis―particularly when the dinosaurs are so unusual. The authors lay them out for us, situate them beautifully in time, space, and cultural history, and then reassemble them and their world using all the tools of modern science. The result is a tour de force.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWeishampel brings forward a provocative hypotheosis regarding the the development of the Euhadrosaurid clade in this well-written and enjoyable book. It has the background explanations for the dilettante paleaontology student (like myself) while bringing forward the evidence to support his ideas.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2012Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe Transylvanian Plateau in what is now modern Romania was in the later Cretaceous what appears to have been an island. The area today is surrounded by mountains of the Sureanu and Retezat ranges and is known as the Hateg Basin. In older times as a fair sized island, it appears to have been colonized by several lines of herbivorous dinosaurs and only a few preditory species. The first fossil discoveries were made by an early giant of the new field of paleontology, Franz Baron Nopcsa in the late 1800s. The Baron became an early advocate of this new discipline and proposed various theories as to why the first few dinosaurs were smaller than near relatives in other areas. His first dinosaur was a primitive hadrosaurid he named Telmatosaurus transylvanicus. Soon after more dinosaurs were uncovered and they too were smaller than close relatives. The Baron had an interesting and colorful career but came to a tragic end with just a hint of scandal. His work however inspired other workers to search for more fossils of dinosaurs, plants, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, pterosaurs and a host of other types. Over the years some new species of herbivorous Dinosauria have been recovered: a Sauropod or two, a few Ornithopoda and a Nodosaurid Ankylosaur. Most of these are a mass of disarticulated skeletal remains and are not of themselves much to write home about. It turns out these were late arrivals and evolutionary dead ends. The one exception was Napcsa first find, the Telmatosaurus. This appears to have had larger forebears but became smaller on this limited island space (paedomorphosis?). but was linked to the line that gave rise to the advanced Euhadrosauria. It is this story and several others that are the beauty of this book. I've read Dr. Weishampels texts for many years and he is famous and very well respected in this field. In addition he is a cultivated writer who is able to guide the reader through the difficulr statistical terrain and evolutional mathmatics to make clear what seemed like a jumbled mass of figures. Though I was at first put off by the lack of any really exciting finds of Dinosauria, the good Professor's elucidation of what the few discoveries meant in relation to island biology, adaptation by paedomorphosis, and partial readaptation to a larger form after dispersal, K strategy and r strategy in maintaining a viable population, made the later chapters well worth the pain of transit through the mathmatical hazards. An excellent read and a good mental excercise

4.0 out of 5 stars very interesting book and hypotheses
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseOverall well written and it seems to be the only contemporary book focusing on the dinosaurs of late mesozoic central Europe/Hațeg island. Only four stars because the rather long explanations of phylogenic slightly distract from the main questions the book tries to answer and more/better maps would have been also helpful.
