- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2016Trolled is the first book in a YA fantasy series by D. K. Bussell. Nat Lawler is a seventeen year old girl in England. She's talked into joining her boyfriend ,Terry, and his three friends, who are all misfit, nerdy teenagers on a role playing day in the woods. While there, they come across a dying elf who tells Nan to take his sword(Cleaver) and kill Drensila the Black(an evil wicked Queen). Seeing a portal into another world, they all decide to step through the portal and investigate their new surroundings. By doing so, they are swept into a world of elves, dwarves, unicorns, trolls, a wicked queen , and magic. The elves consider NAn "The Chosen One" . She's called upon to protect the elves and everything else in the Broken Lands from Queen Drensila. Drensila wants to conquer their world with the help of her trolls. Trolled is a very funny book filled with one liners and sarcasm. The characters are well developed. We watch a group of nerdy teenagers show strength and inventiveness in thwarting Drensila and her trolls. Will Nan and her friends defeat Drensila? Will they ever get back to England? I thoroughly enjoyed reading Trolled. It made me laugh out loud at times and kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next!!! I can't wait to read the next book in the series to find out what will happen to the teenagers and their new fantasy friends. I voluntarily received an ARC for an honest review. KMc
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2017This book turned out ot be more that what I hoped. I didn't have exact expectations beside of humore and some rpg, but there was adventure, deep characters; well, even the heroine was cool - and that's not something I'd easiloften say.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017No my type of humor, not my type of writing style. The characters felt a bit too cliche for me and the humor through the actions a bit too strained.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2016I really tried to like this novel. If it just was not a great story. I saw all these positive reviews so I was excited to read it. I started it and kept reading waiting for it to get better. I am now half way through and honestly I can't force myself to read any more. It's a pretty normal story a group of friends end up in fantasy world and have to save the world. The main character is not too unlikeable but she just kinda seems to hate everything and everyone. The other main chrecters are just plain annoying each one in their own way suck. A strong heroine is fine in fact there are a ton of amazing strong female leads but it doesn't work when you make her some insane person who seems to constantly loose it and seems pissed off all the time. Also it seems like the author tried to make her seem even stronger not by making her grow as a person but by making everyone else absolutely unbearable. All in all this book is really not good as interesting as the reviews make it sound it's not really funny it's not really interesting and it's not really worth $4.00. Read it if you like but just know the reviews don't really do this book justice.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017A group of teenage fantasy roleplayers, from Ongar in England, find a porthole to another dimension – where elves and dwarves and magic are real – and get caught up in a real-life fantasy adventure. What’s not to like about that? This is a great concept, that hooked me immediately, and I’m not somebody who reads a lot of fantasy (outside of Pratchett and Tolkien). In fact, although this is a fantasy style quest, the light-heartedness and comic timing reminded me more of the comedy film “Galaxy Quest”. The simple concept that these teenage role-players get to live out their role-play for real is simple and genius.
I’m a reader that has, foremost, to be hooked by the flow of the writing, and then by the story/genre – that’s just how my brain works with novels. I found that there were a few bumps in my reading experience on the opening few chapters, mainly where the author sets up the backstory to the fantasy world in a novelistic version of a voice-over flashback, which I struggled to engage fully with. But then – whoosh – a new, great novelist is born; a rare kind of novelist whose future novels I’ll await with interest and will put on my to-read list. I love the flow of the writing, the concept, the character interaction and development. This is a lovely, funny, lighthearted, easy-to-read story.

Cool idea. A group of fantasy LARPers go to the woods with their rubber weapons and end up getting transported to an actual world of swords and sorcery. The story gets moving right away and has some great characters. Killer dialogue too, especially from the talking sword. When is book two out?
