Trophies: A DI Colin Strong Investigation (The Wakefield Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
TROPHIES, first in the acclaimed Wakefield Series
When DI Colin Strong interviews a man on suspicion of handling stolen goods, he's convinced he's heard their voice before. Nearly 25 years earlier, the tape of Wearside Jack taunted West Yorkshire Police and the suspect fits the profile. Then the body of a known burglar shows up and a mysterious metal case is discovered at the scene which leads to the realisation that a series of attacks on women over the previous twenty years had gone unconnected.
Strong turns to his close friend, journalist Bob Souter, and embarks on an awkward alliance to probe areas he is unable to explore openly. As the murder suspects start to disappear, Strong must discover just who the shadowy figure enciting fear and panic amongst those he encounters is. Strong wants to bring a murderer to justice and Souter is hungry for a story. Who will get to the truth first and can their friendship remain intact?
"TROPHIES moves at a cracking pace. Full of believable well-drawn characters in an equally believable Yorkshire setting where that county's most notorious crime spree still impinges on DI Strong and Bob Souter's current investigations. First in a series by this writer to watch. Perfect for TV." Sally Spedding, Crime and Thriller writer.
"An intriguing detective story, full of twists and turns." Jane Isaac, Crime writer.

I love reading police procedural books and this one didn't disappoint. Sometimes I did feel it was a little bit drawn out and difficult to follow because of the numerous characters involved but as the story unfolded I really got to grips with DI Strong and his journalist friend Bob Souter as they both in their own way try to solve a major crime. A good read which I'd definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2016This book will be of interest to readers who enjoy realistic police procedurals and British readers who remember Peter Sutcliffe's reign of terror and the hoax tapes that misdirected the police investigation.
The story line is intriguing. First an officier hears a voice which he believes might be the hoax caller in the Ripper case. Then following a brutal murder of a known burgular a trophy box of items taken from women assaulted in previous years is found. These items bring an earlier conviction into question and also suggests Sutcliffe was telling the truth when he claimed no knowledge of the Carlisle murder. Meanwhile the unknown owner of the trophy box is prepared to kill to hide his identity. With a drug bust going down and a senior officer involved in an illicit affair and possibly corrupt dealings, there's a lot going on!
With so many officers involved in different lines of investigation plus the journalist in search of a scoop I found this a very busy book and found it difficult to keep track of everything. Again with so much going on I found it hard to connect with any one character.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2016I thought that this was an excellent whodoneit. I am from the US and since this was set in the UK, a few of the terms took some getting acquainted with. Lots of characters to keep up with.
If I were an editior (I'm not), I would have suggested that the book be shortened about 20% and the number of characters reduced by the same amount.
All in all, a very enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2016I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. As a resident of Sheffield (for seventy years) I was curious to see how he would represent this area and this city. It was totally believable; David Evans clearly knows his locality. The plot was also a fascinating one. The Yorkshire Ripper is one of Britain’s most notorious killers and the story surrounding that is cleverly woven into this storyline with great skill. I read it in one day, didn’t want to put it down and have every intention of reading it again. It’s a cracker of a book and I heartily recommend it. I found the characterisation to be superb; DI Strong was just an ordinary copper, didn’t have hang-ups, just got on with his job. Brilliant. The secondary characters, both police and media, worked just as well and I was on tenterhooks all the way through the book. All my guesses proved to be wrong!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2016Really good read, enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the next book
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2016This is a very well written story which I didn’t enjoy very much due to the excessive violence. I’m sure many other readers will enjoy the book, it just wasn’t for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great authentic British novel
Good English crime novel, lots of twists and turns. Delves well into the Yorkshire ripper era. Nice to be able to relate to the area and events. It does not detract from a good story line in always . top stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book.
This well written police procedural crime novel, had me enthralled from the beginning to the last page. The believable characters draw you in from the start particularly DI Colin Strong and his team of detectives, it gives a little insight to his personal life, but not to much to take you away from the main storyline. He's a character I found easily drawn to, good at what he does and not afraid to give praise to other team members when it's deserving. His old school friend Bob Souter a newspaper reporter makes an appearance back into Strong's life, he too, is great at finding out secrets, so they feed off each other. Reading this book, I felt it a little like watching it play out on the TV it's so well written the picture in your head is there, cleverly without the author feeling the necessity to over describe scenes. I did find it a little confusing in parts as there are a lot of characters, but that could just be me. I loved this novel, and think this author could find a good following for DI Colin Strong and his team plus Bob Souter of course. The nickname bestowed on Strong's immediate boss DCI Jack Cunningham, commonly known as 'The Enforcer' is very appt and a great touch. I'm now off to start book 2 'Torment'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devious
The entanglement with real events is clever but the crux of the story is that we never have all the facts. The ability for a human brain to form a theory around not what was said, but how it was said is particularly clever. Some of the grim facts of UK life still mar everything around them. The bigotry and sexual stereotyping have not changed in a hundred years and I despair they ever will.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for crime fans!
I would like to thank David at UK Crime Book Club and David Evans for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest and open review.
This is one of those books that once you start reading you will not want to put it down.
It's a roller-coaster ride from page 1 to the end.
I loved all the characters. They are well-described,fleshed out and develop nicely as the book progresses and we come to know them better.
The areas were described perfectly and I could imagine myself there.
All crime fans will love this. I hope this is the beginning of a long series of books.
