It's Not You (True-blue Book 6) Kindle Edition
When a protective ex-cop helps his gorgeous tenant through his recovery, their complicated history is asking for trouble. Will the fear of the past repeating itself destroy any possibility of happiness?
Daredevil drifter Lawrence Crawford is hunting for a place to call home. After ten years of looking, he believes he’s found what he’s been searching for. With a job that pays the bills and a small group of friends he’s opening up to, he lets down his guard. Perhaps too much so. Finding himself in need of support, Lawrence is forced to accept help from the one man who’s been driving him to distraction for the past year. His landlord.
Former cop Billy Hilton made a mistake—admittedly there’ve been many over the years. The latest is when he lets Lawrence believe he isn’t interested in pursuing anything with him. It’s not even the age difference or the fact the guy lives in Billy’s studio apartment that’s the problem. Instead, it’s all him. When Billy offers to play nursemaid to Lawrence, his intentions may not be pure, but they’re honest. And that honesty blows their lives wide open when Lawrence’s past comes knocking on the door, demanding changes and threatening an upheaval neither man may ever recover from.
Book five in Becca Seymour’s stand-alone low-angst, feel-good LGBTQ series, True-blue. In this small town, there are busybodies, dogs who cause chaos, families who have the “best” of timing, and opportunities for good men to find their perfect match.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2025As you read through this series you will see how support is one of the main focus in each book. This book is no different. Lawrence and Billy’s story is no different. Lawrence has been on his own since he was 17 yrs old, kicked out by his mom, who’s the Governor of Wisconsin. He ends up in Kirkby and gets a job at the bar own by Ted and Jason, who btw are like protective parents to him. Then he moves into a rental that Billy owns. Billy becomes his biggest supporter. Lawrence becomes Billy’s biggest supporter. Together they navigate through past hurts, destructive people and memories. Becca Seymour did a remarkable job in the telling of this story as well as showing how huge and better life can be when you have people there who support you. This book deserves 5 stars ⭐️. Onward to book 7. 💜
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2021Liked the story and the main characters.
Two complaints:
Did not like the relationship between the ex cop and the wife of his ex partner. He was so intense they had to move apart from each other? Even when they saw each other towards the end of the book, it was odd. More counseling needed!
Over-use of phrases like “tugged lower lip” “chewed lip” “dragged bottom lip”. A bit distracting.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2024After a one night stand with his tenant, Billy realizes he needs help to be a better person and to move on. Laurence has been burned enough in his past that once someone hurts him, he has trouble opening up and allowing people in. When an accident leaves Laurence off his feet to recuperate, Billy takes his chance yo make ammends and hopefully regain Laurence trust again.
These two have baggage to work through, but it's done in such a way that the book isn't angsty. The two learn to build trust and to let the other in.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2023Becca Seymour is good at this stuff, and she succeeded (again) delivering a great story that focuses on two men who actually begin their story after a false start. If you like complicated characters, both Billy and Lawrence will deliver. Billy’s true nature comes out when Lawrence, his neighbor and tenant, lands in the hospital and needs the support of a good samaritan. Billy may have ulterior motives, but he focuses on Lawrence as a potential friend in need of help. Both characters have back stories that eventually come to light, and both rise to the occasion and support each other. Always expect some challenges, but these two will deliver amazing and satisfying character when called on. If you don’t find yourself smiling from time to time, you should pause and reread, because they have performed something(s) you have missed. Very good read!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2020Lawrence and Billy's past gives this book a little more, I would say it is my favorite in the series. All about redemption, and hellish a mother, and moving forward.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025This is my third series by Becca Seymour. This is how it works… A book cover catches my attention or maybe a title, so I go read the blurb. I then realize it’s the second book in a series so instead of downloading the book that I first looked at, I start with book 1. THEN lo and behold, I look up and I’m on book 7 trying to figure out where the time went!! That’s the indication right there of how great an author is!! Loved Billy & Lawrence!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2023We knew a little about Billy from previous books, but he’s such a quiet, private guy that we didn’t know much beyond surface level stuff. As much as I loved him already, I really wanted to pummel him for what he did to Lawrence towards the beginning of this book. Especially after Lawrence says how long it’s been since he’s been with anyone.
I had fun to figure out Lawrence’s past. It wasn’t what I expected at all! Nice twist. What a nasty, horrible excuse for a parent! I hope she gets a bigger bite taken out of her by karma & I hope his sister cuts her out of her life.
I’m a little disappointed that everyone didn’t come completely clean about everything with each other, and am bummed that things aren’t resolved with Jasper yet. I really hoped for otherwise.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2020It’s Not You, the standalone installment of Becca Seymour’s True-Blue series, is one of my favorites. This forced proximity, opposites attract, May/December romance between a twenty-seven-year-old drifter with a past and a forty-three-year-old ex-cop is relatively low angst; notwithstanding an evil and manipulative mother and the initial dickish attitude of the ex-cop. Don’t fret, the d@$kish ex-cop redeems himself. As for the evil mom, she can crawl back under a rock and stay there.
Lawrence Crawford is running from a past and is tired of it. His story is sadly all too familiar, as he was abandoned for his sexuality by his influential mother. Missing his sister and with the promise of a brighter, less nomadic future, he eventually breaks. Lawrence to his mother…
“When you threw me out when I was seventeen years old,” I said, my voice hard as I cut in, “you broke something in me.”
“Sometimes I don’t know how I got through those days.” I snorted humorlessly. “Hell, years by myself.”
When an accident severely injures former cop Billy Hilton and takes the life of his patrol partner, Clark, Billy struggles to navigate the torment of his treacherous mind. Billy chastises himself epically and depicts the full strength and self-awareness of his character…
The worst thing was I’d burned that bridge. Set the damn thing on fire. Thrown a few hand grenades on it for good measure.
I’d been an absolute dick, and I didn’t think it was possible to undick myself, which sounded way off, but seriously, my behavior had been off-the-charts shit-tastic.
The chemistry between Lawrence and Billy is an immediate inferno, initially snuffed out by a harsh dose of reality, the past being their greatest adversary. It takes a slow, methodical and earnest approach to overcome their history, one that is engaging and yields a much needed, well-deserved, second chance for Lawrence and Billy.
From the captivatingly strong beginning, through the emotional ups and downs, to its strong conclusion, It’s Not You is a treasure. Lawrence’s strength and growth covering a decade, is admirable. Billy’s self-awareness, his gentle kindness, and his meticulous approach to repair his own mental state, along with the unfortunate wedge he drove between himself and Lawrence, is awe-inspiring.
I was tempted to quote a passage at the end of It’s Not You, but decided it is best savored after you have completed the journey to the happy ending that Lawrence and Billy obtain. Go ahead and take a chance on It’s Not You and immerse yourself in this small town, with evasive well-meaning friends who aren’t shy pointing out your missteps.
Note: I learned something by reading It’s Not You. I had no idea what parkour was, so I had to stop reading and Google it. Yeah, not something I will be trying anytime soon unless I suddenly have a death wish. Just goes to show that reading, no matter what the genre, broadens your mind and strengthens your soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming romance.
A charming romance, with very little angst. Lawrence and Billy, once they got over an awkward beginning, were so sweet together. But what I really loved was how protective Billy was of the younger Lawrence, and how he helped helped him heal. Nicely written by Ms Seymour, it was so nice to meet up with characters from previous books in the series. I enjoyed the idea that family is something that can be chosen, which was a very real thing for Lawrence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another beautiful and funny story
I adore this series. Each character is unique and genuinely flawed where they are able to grow and become better with the other by their side and yet maintain that desired quality of knowing it was on their own strength and the other was simply a source of inspiration. It's Not You brings together yet another such union. But it's not just romance and sex and that's why I keep reading Becca Seymour's books. There is a real story and even characters with minimal interaction have defined personalities and interests. I can't wait for the next installment.

A sweet holiday read, with very low angst, but a lot of love at the end. How a small town can join together to make life breathable for everyone. 😍📚❤️
