This book is the combination of two shorter stories about Kyle Achilles and Katya. The first story begins when Achilles takes Katya to an ultra exclusive restaurant so that he can pop the question. But before he is able to summon the courage, the restaurant customers are kidnapped and held for $2 million ransom. Achilles again shows himself to be smart, resourceful, and a world-class climber.

The first story resolves at about halfway through the book, but Katya is then taken captive by a terrorist group and Achilles is in pursuit. Katya struggles to hold herself together as a prisoner while Achilles follows the clues in order to rescue her in time.

This book may stand on its own, but I strongly recommend the first books in the Kyle Achilles series in order to get the background of the characters. This book was not about international intrigue or Achilles' work as a spy, but rather they were simply victims of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kyle and Katya's relationship is in the forefront, adding to the tension and giving this story a more personal and emotional feel than the others. It is not about the romance, but it is all about her rescue. The author once again weaves together complex plots, new technical gadgets, and surprising twists. The story concludes with the perfect ending.

I gladly gave this story 5 stars. There are only two negatives that I could say about this book: The first is the connection between the two stories. The twist between the two stories felt too forced (in my opinion) and stretched believability. The second was my own preference: This felt like two novella rather than a single novel. One thing I always appreciated about this author is his complex plots and the way they come together. But because these are two shorter stories, each of the stories are less complex than the previous books in the series.

With these comments, I heavily recommend this book.

Kyle Achilles plans to propose to Katya Kozara by celebrating her birthday at the very special Cinquante Bouches. The diners at this elegant, high class, Northern California restaurant are forced, at gun point, to leave table-by-table. When the diners awake, they are disoriented in total darkness and have no idea where they are let alone they are now in Nevada. Each of them is told they must transfer $2M to an online account in order to be released. It is now up to Achilles to find a way to get them out of this underground prison.
With the help of a fellow kidnapped couple Achilles and Katya formed a bond with, they manage to escape but the tables turn. The couple is not who they appeared to be but actually Saudi, with a brilliant cunning conspiracy motivated by emotions rather than religion. Can Achilles figure out what they have planned in Florida, without getting arrested, and save Katya?
This story is fast-paced and plausible that you could believe it could happen. I liked two things about this book. The first being the key players were all couples. Second, I liked the relationship between Achilles and Katya. It was always strong but Katya’s determination, alertness, and resourcefulness are similar characteristics of Achilles. My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 could be because I lost my focus, when on vacation and didn’t get a chance to read, in figuring out how Achilles put two and two together in the conspiracy to move forward.

Have you ever spent the night somewhere other than in your own bed or slept so deeply in your own bed that when you awoke you were disoriented? If your answer is yes, welcome to Kyle Achilles' world.

Achilles has planned a very special evening for himself and his lover, Katya Kozara, in a very special restaurant, for a very special reason. It’s Katya’s birthday and Achilles has a secret.

“Cinquante Bouches is “. . . Northern California’s most exclusive restaurant.” In 15 years of existence, it has been awarded a rare three Michelin stars. The restaurant accepts 50 reservations online only. For one of the diners fortunate enough to obtain a reservation, the nine course meal costs $400.00 payable at the time of booking - two months in advance.

The diners have just enjoyed the appetizer course when two individuals enter the restaurant dressed head to toe in black carrying submachine guns. They make everyone, table by table, leave the restaurant.

The next thing the diners know they are awakening in total darkness with no memory of how they got wherever it is they are. The restaurant patrons include the very rich owner of a pharmaceutical company, the Governor of Florida, Achilles and Katya, and a number of scientists and bankers.

Where are they and why are they here? Then a computerized voice informs them that each of them must agree to transfer $2,000,000.00 to an online account, then they will be released. They now know the purpose for their abduction but not the reason they were abducted, who abducted them, or how they were abducted.

How will they get out of this underground prison? The only ingress and egress is electronic and their kidnappers have removed the electric control panels. One of the elevators is manual but the “crank” does not work. Now it is up to Achilles to find a way to get them out. He has a great resource for information, the owner of the bunker is also the owner of the pharmaceutial company.

This book begins in Northern California, moves to Nevada, and winds up in Florida. It starts with four kidnappers, two of whom have been mingled with the 48 hostages taken from Cinquante Bouches, and ends with two, who started out as legitimate diners at the restaurant and hostages of the original kidnappers.

You will be captivated from page one to the end of the book. I highly recommend it.

Although not a fan of the exceptionally handsome, athletic genius with multitalented attributes hero, I found Mr Tiger's plotting, pace, style and ingenuity, together with his research and lack of deux et machina contrivances compelling reading. The drip-feed exposure of what is really going on along with the unexpected twists makes for compulsive, if somewhat life disruptive, reading. I shall be experiencing more of Mr Tiger's novels - domestic chores will just have to wait their turn.

Another great Tigner page turner! Given the man’s jacket biography it’s easier to see where he gets his plotting. It sounds like he might be writing from personal experience half the time!

This one is brilliantly laid out. I was thinking I was almost to the end when I looked down and saw I was only 30% in! Then this thing takes off like a rocket in an entirely new and unexpected direction.

It’s so good it could be a stand alone book but, do yourself a favour and read the other 3 (½) too. You will be glad you did.

    Well done, Tim!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book especially in relation the good level of detail in the plotting. All the main characters were interesting and compelling and in relation to them the author continued the theme of exploring the gray areas in human behaviour. Do explicitly bad people have the capacity to do good and are those doing right still right when they carry out negative actions
