About the author

Amrita Skye Blaine writes poems, memoir, fiction and short essays, developing themes of aging, disability, spiritual awakening, and most of all, the process of unlearning–the heart of the matter. In 2003, she received an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University. She has retired from teaching fiction and memoir in the older adults program at Santa Rosa Junior College in northern California, and now writes a poem a day.
She has had poems and personal essays published in sixteen anthologies, and in national magazines: “In Context” (now known as “Yes!” magazine) and “Catalyst.” Her poetry collection, "every riven thing" is coming out from Finishing Line Press mid-2025.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2018This book is well written and has considerable suspense over the characters’ fate. In fact, as someone who is not a fan of dogs I was pleasantly surprised to find it a page-turner for about 3/4 of the book. There are three main characters and each have dogs at some time. Each play a role. I found the three main human characters inconsistent including the child. Only after it is established Moss suffered from PTSD does the reader learn how proficient he is. He manages 1700 acres of natural habitat with perhaps an acre of small farm, raises chickens, keeps a large garden, cooks meals from scratch with meat he’s killed on his land with bow and arrow, maintains a nice home, a guest home, and a barn with more guest quarters. He hikes miles on his land despite a limp and pain from his artificial leg.
Rowan, a precocious 11 -year-old(?) has a special way of communicating with her dog, Zephy, which is intriguing and some of the story is told from Zephyr’s point of view. Rowan loves Moss and tells her mother she wants herself and her single parent mother to be a family again, but she feels funny and fearful about her mother being alone with Moss Fairly natural for a child.
Carolina, Rowan’s mother who after her husband’s death had resolved not to get involved until Rowan was in college. She ends up being on again, off again when circumstances lead her and Rowan to spend time with Moss. Also understandable. Carolina is also alternatively bold and weak in social circumstances, which is hard for me to justify. I’m not sure if I found her on again off again behavior annoying or tedious when it continues after she has decided with Rowan’s approval to have a relationship with Moss.
The first 3/4, roughly, is so good it gets my rating as 5 star.

It gets to the heart of loss and the uphill climb toward release, healing and opening up to honest, intimate, no-pretense love. Blaine's characters are clearly drawn, and totally believable. I hated to let them go. An engaging and very satisfying read.

Engaging from page 1 with lots of great dialogue that carries the story forward. Heartfelt, wonderful storytelling. Because I absolutely hate spoilers of any kind I won’t talk about the plot or characters. I read the novel start to finish in one sitting. Hopefully that tells you how glued I was and how much I enjoyed it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2022I started this book and was hooked. It took me a couple of weeks to finish because I was so enamoured with the prose of this book. It just described each character and each doggie with beautifully creative word choices. This was one of the only books that I have read this thoroughly. It was a pleasure. And from book 1 onto book 2.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2017There is no better companion on a wet, blustery and chilly weekend than this sweet novel, accompanied by the flickering glow of a live fire in the wood stove and the warmth of a long-term friendship. There is a delightful cadence to the storytelling and it's populated by characters that ring true-to-life. Skye shows us that the complicated human spirit is capable of growing stronger from dealing with loss and unexpected tragedy, and that love is the balm. She also evokes the physical "place" of this novel through the wonderful seasonings of the sights, sounds and flavors of Oregon living.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2017I was immersed in this lovely book from the first page. Skye Blaine is an exceptional storyteller. Her characters are fully realized, and her understanding of animals, her empathy, is breathtaking. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2019This is a multi-faceted love story with such insightful depth. There is heroism, healing, and so much heart. What a delight to be introduced to “pensing” - the dog’s voice is so beautifully realized. A joyous read, can’t wait for the sequel.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2017Rowen is 11. Her dad died suddenly four years ago, leaving her and her mom to struggle to find their way without him. They adopt a new dog in the hope it will help Rowen climb out of her depression. It works. She and Zephyr discover they can communicate by sending word pictures to each other’s minds. This seems like a cute Disneyesque feature until something awful happens to the family and that ability becomes critical to their survival. Meanwhile, we meet a veteran, Moss, who lost his leg in the war in Afghanistan and struggles with PTSD. The events in the book will bring the characters together. This book quickly took over my life until I finally just sat down and read to the end. Some things seem to happen too easily and veer toward clichés—haven’t I seen the troubled man hiding out on a ranch before? Could Rowen really recover so easily from her injuries?—but overall, I really like it and praise this first novel from my Antioch MFA classmate. Besides, how could I not love a book about a dog? Bravo, Skye Blaine.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will touch your heart and leave you wanting more..
I first came in to contact with Skye Blaine through social media as we share a love of wolfhounds and deerhounds. After reading her first book "Bound to Love" I was totally in awe of her writing style and her ability to make words dance along in a captivating and way, even when describing the most difficult of circumstances.
"Unleashed" showcases Skye' s ability as an accomplished writer to move effortlessly from writing fact to fiction. Unleashed not only describes the bond between a young girl and her beloved dog, it brings a number of people together who have experienced personal traumas.
Each character develops slowly, including Zepher the wolfhound deerhound cross. You get drawn in to the characters and their painful experiences and you find yourself hoping for what becomes the eventual beautiful ending.
I have two wolfhound deerhound crosses, they are such characters. I followed the story with both tears and smiles.
A must read for anyone who connects with or has a love of the special relationships between humans and animals.
