★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "I'll start out with, you do not need to know much Shakespeare or be a Shakespeare super aficionado to enjoy these "fun size" horror treasures. I believe both die hard and casual fans will enjoy this book. I truly enjoyed all of the stories and the sonnets were top notch. There isn't a bad one in the bunch. There is variety and so many different twists and takes on his works. The creativity is amazing. I liked the modern telling of these tales, you will breeze through this book much easier than stumbling through Shakespeare's work. It is fresh and worth the read.
This is the second book in the "Unleashed" series. The first book is Classic Monsters Unleashed. I haven't read that one yet, but it is loaded to my Kindle for reading. Both Unleashed books are available on Amazon. Be sure to check them out."—PopHorror

Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

Shakespeare Retold

- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2023I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of taking classic literature and incorporating a horror theme!!! I love Shakespeare. At least what I've managed to read. I can't stay out of the horror section. 👹 Great job! ALL THE CONTRIBUTORS to this anthology deserve a heartfelt 5 🌟 review! There isn't a bad story of poem in the bunch. Loved it!!! That said, I don't really do the kind of review where I talk about characters or plots...that's why you "READ" a book for yourselves. So. My solid advice would be to definitely "Read" T the darn book!!!
(DISCLAIMER: You should familiarize yourself)
( with the most popular of Shakespeare's )
(writings before taking this on or you may not)
(get the ironies, etc. EX. MacBeth, Romeo & )
(Juliet, The Winter's Tale, A Midsummer Night)
( Dream & others. At least the rudimentary gist)
( of the story. You don't have to actually read )
( the works to enjoy these tales.)
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2023Shakespeare is a natural for horror writers to reimagine. This lineup includes some of the very best modern horror writers and a smattering of lesser known writers to deliver a solid collection of stories Shakespeare himself might admire.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024One or two good stories here......... the rest not so much. Seems like folks are to busy flaunting their knowledge of the Bard and stroking their egos
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2023The first thing that I'd like to mention is that even if you are not well-read regarding Shakespeare's works or maybe you've never been a fan of his to start: this anthology is still a fantastic adventure of horror and wonder. These A-List authors took inspiration from some of Shakespeare's most well known plays and characters and reimagined them as horror stories and sonnets. In some cases, lesser known characters created by Shakespeare were featured and since there wasn't much written about them, it allowed the author(s) to get really creative. To make things even more fun, there were a few instances where an author expanded upon or was inspired by a previous author's story!
I have to be up front and say that since I am not someone who seeks out poetry of any kind to read, you maybe shouldn't take my word or opinion too much into account for the sonnets. They rhymed and were intriguing and I liked it.
These stories were full of strife, murder and scheming - but they were written with such beauty! I highlighted so many quotes that stood out to me because of their impact, beauty and/or meaning. To be quite honest, I think what appealed to me so much with this anthology is because it's written in modern day speech (though some had a bit of old English in there) and my brain can read and comprehend that so much better than trying to decipher Shakespeare's plays.
This anthology would be great for those of you who prefer "bite-sized" horror!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2023I had the distinct pleasure of reading some of the essays submitted for this collection, and I can guarantee that these stories and poems are the absolute best of a strong set of contributions. I did not envy the multitalented James Aquilone the challenge of choosing the final pieces. This anthology could have been twice as long and still been of unwaveringly excellent quality.
If I had to choose a favorite, "Nothing Like the Sun: Rosaline's Satisfaction", Donna J.W. Munroe's rethinking of Romeo and Juliet from Rosalind's point of view, should be required high school reading along with play. Cindy O'Quinn's "Unrepentant" makes having read Titus Adronicus worthwhile. "I Demand the City of Flesh" by Maxwell I. Gold is one of the more brilliant titles I've ever read with a poem to back it up. Watching Falstaff get his comeuppance in Zachary Rosenberg's "The Hungry Wives of Windsor" is pure gory pleasure.
Do yourself a favor and pick this book up. It is both homage to and a continuation of the Bard's desire to please the masses, especially when the masses are looking for a bit of blood.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2024These were awful. I don't often DNF an anthology because the stories are short and there are usually a few great ones. I gave up about halfway because none of them were remotely entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2023I purchased the hardcover book through the Kickstarter campaign when it launched.
Shakespeare retold as the authors’ interpretation is such an interesting concept. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but can now say I am absolutely thrilled with the results.
Some of the stories/sonnets you will recognize right away as to which story inspired it. Others are ones that may not be familiar to all but luckily for us readers the authors have included which story was the inspiration (some under the title, others at the end).
Shakespeare was most known for drama and that’s what we find here only ratcheted up a notch or two. All the stories/sonnets are worth the read and I can honestly say there wasn’t one bad tale. Truly if you like horror, plots with a twist, or just short stories period, then you must pick up this book! Well worth the read!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2023Absolutely love the mix of horror and Shakespeare ideas. And they are short stories, so it doesn't feel like you are having to race to the end of the chapter because you are tired. Let's face it. Stopping in the middle is a chapter sucks
