About the author

"As soon as I learned my ABC I was writing stories."
Ruth Miranda is a Portugal born and raised author who feels more comfortable around words than people, especially if those words happen to be in English, a language she once taught for a living - amongst other varied jobs. She started making up stories in her head as a child, to put herself to sleep, but the stories kept growing with her, so eventually, they needed to be put to paper. Her published work includes The Heir of Avalon Series, the romance novel Danseur and the Byanamese Romance series. You can find her being social on Instagram under the handle @ruth__miranda, where she shares snippets of upcoming and published work. - always dark and always queer centred.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017An interesting and well-written book, it explores the multi-faceted world of the preternatural. A society comprising of vampires, fey, witches and werewolves, all existing alongside unsuspecting mortals (or commoners), and all interlinked with a complicated network of family connections and allegiances.
Begining with Sasha, and her search for her family roots, it soon branches out as we discover with her that she is a preternatural, blessed or cursed, with powers beyond her understanding. Travelling with her on her search, we discover her twisted and complex family past and meet a wide range of enthralling and interesting characters from all elements of the preternatural world.
A fairly meaty book, the author gives herself and us, time to explore each species of preternatural, to learn about their strengths and weaknesses, how they all entwine and interconnect with each other. In fact, it is this complex spiderweb of bloodlines that is the books greatest strength, and also its only weakness. As a reader, I sometimes struggled to make sense of the connections, floundering helplessly in a sea of names and family connections. My one suggestion to the author would be to maybe incorporate a family tree at the beginning, or, if that is too complicated (which I think it probably would be) then maybe a glossary of characters. I really needed something to refer to, when I was desperately trying to work out which character from the past she was talking about, which species they were, and how they connected to Sasha.
Other than that one tiny critique, this was an intriguing, fun and well-written book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I have already bought the next two books in the series and am looking forward to reading them.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2018Unnatural starts with Sasha, a young woman looking for her family after the loss of her uncle. This leads her to genealogist, Ruth, who recognizes that Sasha is a blood witch and introduces her to a world of supernatural beings such as vampires and werewolves. Once in this world, Sasha learns the dark secrets of her family and discovers a forbidden love. Full of interesting ideas, Unnatural is a great start to what is sure to be an intriguing series. Whilst not a lot of 'events' happen in the first book, it does put you in the world where you get to know all about the creatures that inhabit it and how they are all linked together. I loved that it hinted at what the supernatural powers were without outright saying them until the right point in the story, and I enjoyed the explanations as I'm not an avid reader of this type of creature genre. There's a great twist at the end of the book which automatically pushes you into wanting to read the next. It's not a perfect read, the author tends to take time describing exactly what everyone is wearing, which slows down the pace, and a run through by a more thorough editor would help to tidy up some of the weaker spots, the odd typo, and the misuse of some common phrases, but it is full of interesting ideas and characters and well worth a read if you like stories involving supernatural creatures and lore.
