This novel was refreshingly saucy, with sex from almost page one which carries on throughout. It’s definitely wanking material, and reads like an erotic daydream. Abi having a crush on her step-fathers fiancée, Emma, makes for an exhilarating dynamic. While there are m/f scenes, the romance between the two female protagonists is incredibly loving, while still being hot.

One reoccurring theme I really loved was that both Abi and Emma are beautiful young women in their own right, who are attracted to each other, for that reason. The dynamic makes for a fiery romance, and they “switch” roles often but seamlessly, and their dedication to each other is clear.

While I wouldn’t consider this strictly a f/f story, the characters are believable and get a much-deserved happy ending.

There are some very dark themes in this novel, but as a lover of the Dark Romance genre, I fully anticipated them. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys ladies being intimate, Dom/sub undertones, and a smattering of spanking, with a happily ever after.

This book is so freaking hot, it'll give you sunburn in the shade!
This was my first read by Rachael and it most certainly won't be the last.
Abi and Emma were just absolute magic together. I don't swing F/F, but wow, do the scenes give one cause for reconsideration!
My main complaint in erom books nowadays is that I get lost in whose hand/leg/body part is where and doing what.
I really had no issues with that in this book, and I think that was exactly what made it work, along with the excellent writing.
    Congrats, Ms. Stewart!

I chose to participate in this book tour because domestic and family violence is a topic that is rarely discussed in it’s dirty and truthful facts and I was interested to see how Rachel Stewart addressed this. However reading this novel I was really surprised and I was really happy to read how Rachael wrote this.

When signing up for this book tour I was given all these warnings about how domestic violence is portrayed in this novel, and that it might be tough to read etc to I was expecting to read some pretty gruesome details. But I was pleasantly surprised when the details were kept to a minimum and we explore the aftermath of these events rather than the events themselves. So I commend Rachael for this, it allows for the book to be pleasurable to read while also addressing real life issues and concerns that many people face. I also liked the fact that she didn’t explore just the physical aspect of domestic and family violence, but also the mental and financial control that can play a part in these circumstances.

So let’s get into the nitty gritty of the book then! We start of with Abi when she first meets Emma and it’s instant attraction. Only problem is Abi has never been attracted to women before. So what is she meant to do? Having known women who were only attracted to men and then met a particular woman who attracted them and resulted in a relationship I was curious to see how Abi would deal with these emotions and the confusion it would inevitably bring along with it. What I quickly figured out was that this seemed to be a matter of love at first sight kind of deals and that Abi was sick of living under her step fathers rule but didn’t know how to leave that control without loosing her lifestyle.

So what is Abi to do? Every time Abi and Emma hook up and her stepfather finds out about it Emma get’s punished. Physically. So not only is he controlling Abi’s access to money and therefore her lifestyle, he is also emotionally, financially and physically controlling Emma in order to garner more business deals to increase his current wealth. Up to the physical control Emma is ok with this as she chose to lead her life like that, however she never intended for a guy to control her physically. So when that starts happening she’s prepared to walk away.

After a fair bit of drama where both Abi and Emma are abused further by Abi’s stepfathers associates they finally seem to make the break they are looking for. Only to have the good doctor and stepfather find them and break in to physically take control of them once again. Luckily Abi seems to have been able to keep her head clear and calls for help which results in the physical safety of both women.

I can’t begin to imagine what real life victims of domestic violence go through before they choose to finally leave, or what they go through emotionally afterwards. I’m glad Rachael showed me a little bit about what they could potentially go through. Her writing style really wrapped me up in the story and got me involved to the point where I made my partner cook dinner just so I could finish the book.

I just wanted to know it ended ok, and I wanted to know what happened to both women after experiencing that. In a way I’m glad Rachael didn’t try to explore their emotional and mental states after going through that trauma as I’m sure it wouldn’t do it justice compared to what those victims actually feel. But I’m also kinda disappointed because maybe then it’d help make people realise that there are more forms of domestic and family violence than just the physical abuse.

Without giving too much away, I really enjoyed reading this novel and I’m glad I decided to go ahead with this one as I know it’s a topic not many people are willing to face. It’s almost like people try to brush this topic under the carpet so I commend Rachael for addressing it head on. And I hope for those people that read this they can gain some form of insight into the various forms of domestic and family violence and can be more empathetic to those who find themselves trapped by these situations.

Abi has been left in her stepfather, Edward’s, care ever since her mother's passing fifteen years ago. Since then Edward has been parading around women in front of of Abi. While this wouldn’t normally bother her, as she tried to distance herself from Edward as much as possible, she finds herself drawn to his latest addition. His latest conquest, Emma, has captured Abi’s attention. Abi never felt an attraction to a woman before, but Emma was totally different. She was older and had a certain way about her that Abi could not resist. When the feeling seems to become mutual, Abi and Emma will stop at nothing to be together and away from Edward’s cruel streak. But, Edward has a tight hold over the both of them. Will Abi and Emma ever get the chance they have been in search of to finally be rid of Edward, so they could be happy together?

I normally do not read books in the F/F category, but the synopsis for this story really captured my attention especially since it has a BDSM element to it. Although most of the BDSM I read has more of a softer side to it and a more loving side. We don’t necessarily get that here especially not with Edward’s interactions with Abi and Emma. Abi feels as if she has no choice, but to take her stepfather’s abuse as he took care of her financially, plus she had nowhere else to go. There was no love lost between Abi and Edward though. Emma on the other hand has gone through a slew of men for financial stability, including her latest relationship with Edward. Emma never imagined that she would fall for Abi especially since she was a lot older than Abi.

I really loved the scenes between Abi and Emma and you can easily see why they connected with each other and how the infatuation turned to love between them. As much as Abi was young, you can see how much she wanted to protect Emma and vice versa. Their romance was really sweet and kinky at the same time. Edward on the other hand is a sadistic monster intent on breaking both girl’s spirits. Edward is definitely a character with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I found myself getting angry at what he put Abi and Emma through. I really rooted for Abi and Emma to give him his comeuppance, so they could finally be free of him. There are a lot of obstacles in the way for that to ever happen, if it does happen.

Unshackled by Rachael Stewart really is the perfect name for this story as it holds so much meaning to what Abi and Emma are going through. It’s about breaking through bonds that have a grip on you so strongly. Bonds that seem as if there is no escaping from. Unshackled is a gripping portrayal of learning how to be free from a life you have lost all control over. I highly recommend Unshackled, especially if you love strong female characters that grow in their strength as the story progresses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, thrilling and jalapeño hot

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book. I‘ve read very little erotica or erotic romance, but I was drawn into this by the author’s polished, confident style of writing.

And I actually really enjoyed it! The sex scenes were not only spicy hot, they were also refreshingly non-repetitive. There was a lot of depth to the emotional relationships between the characters too, particularly the two women, Abi and Emma, as lust gradually begins to develop into something deeper.

I thought from the cover that this was a story about a ménage a trois, but it isn’t. This is very much Abi and Emma’s story, with Abi’s stepfather (and Emma’s fiancé) – the controlling, abusive Edward – a shadowy malign presence in the background. Except, of course, when he comes to the foreground, usually in the most dramatic way possible. I particularly enjoyed the second part of the story, when the women’s relationship has developed into something more tender with the potential to heal them both. I loved how they supported each other in a relationship that was new and different for both of them, determined to outwit the man who controls them.

Some parts – generally those involving sexual interaction with the male characters – were very dark, particularly a scene involving Abi’s doctor, which made for uncomfortable reading. The men in the story all seem to be in cahoots in trying to keep Abi and Emma trapped in the sex-fuelled and male-controlled world they inhabit, but this only serves to strengthen their trust for one another and drive their determination to break free so they can have a future together.

Unshackled has a bit of everything: steamy (and I mean scorchio!) sex scenes, romance, and a thriller-esque plot that really kept me turning the pages. A fantastic debut from Ms Stewart!

5.0 out of 5 stars An exhilarating ride of sex, corruption and forbidden love.

Now I barely read outside of the historical romance sub-genre and when I do I don't often venture into erotica and I certainly don't read lesbian fiction. So you might be asking yourself how I came to even read this book, let alone give it the five star rating it screamed out to me it needed. So hear me out.

If any doubt was left in my mind that Rachael Stewart was one of the most talented writers of our time, this would clench it. She's taken some very taboo subjects and created this remarkable story. Abi and Emma, our heroines of this piece are just so brilliantly written. Their chemistry and sexual tension practically drips off the pages. From the moment Abi meets Emma their connection just hits you and you can't for one minute assume these two women are anything but sexually attracted and curious about one and other. The way the author has written in first person from Abi's pov is very clever, because being able to see her side of the story helped to understand her actions, wants, needs and confusion about having feelings for a women. It made the story flow flawlessly. What you do get from this pov is Abi's strength, although Abi has been through so much abuse at the hands of her step-father, her spirt isn't broken. She's strong, she knows what she wants and isn't afraid of what she has to do to get what she wants and deserves. This story is dark and corrupt male-characters are trying to keep Abi and Emma trapped in this controlling sex fulled life, but this is what makes Abi and Emma's feelings for each other stronger, because they can only trust one and other. The love Abi and Emma show throughout the book was so satisfying to read, the way they protected each other really was really felt off the page. Rachael Stewart writes scorching sex scenes, but at the heart of it she writes love as not many can. Her ability at turning something so twisted into something so beautiful is no easy feat, but let's get back to the fact Rachael Stewart is an extraordinary writer and it's no stretch of the imagination why.

If you're looking for a very sexy, enthralling, twisted, thriller that will keep you turning pages you really have found it.
