Undercover (Vino and Veritas) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,798 ratings

Gabe wants Alec between the sheets…too bad Alec’s undercover already…

Rich kid. Party boy. Gabe is tired of the labels. He’s a smart guy, but ever since he got kicked out of grad school, people are only interested in his no-limit credit card and his pierced ears…and other places.

Tall, dark and scowling Alec hates Vermont, with its artisanal-freaking-everything and its irritating people. To be fair, most people irritate Alec, including the FBI director who sent him here to investigate a smuggling scheme involving yoga mats.

When one of the cutest twinks Alec’s ever seen takes an interest, Alec knows there’s an ulterior motive. No one with multi-colored hair, piercings, and an ass like that would want boring, serious Alec. The kid must be up to no good. Either way, Alec can’t blow his cover. If only he could keep his hands off of Gabe long enough to find out what he’s up to…

Can they ignore their explosive chemistry long enough to foil a smuggling ring? Or will their budding relationship sink faster than a yacht full of contraband?

Once again Eliot delivers on giving us comfortable and recognizable character archetypes but nuanced and complex, see both main characters wear masks. Alec the gruff and aggressive tough guy is actually a stressed out socially awkward introvert who is fairly sensitive and emotionally intelligent. And Gabe the beautiful flamboyant party boy is a shy and insecure academic ground down by a lifetime of abuse, neglect and scapegoating.
Gabe could have the world eating out of his palm if only he had the self confidence and Alec can't believe he could hold Gabe's attention for himself.
His entire conflict of using Gabe to advance his investigation eats him up, Alec recognizes Gabe as something special and wants Gabe's trust and to build him up but he knows that if his cover is blown he could do some serious damage to Gabe that may not be repairable.
Ultimately the reveal and resolution was so satisfying and believable, Alec was willing to make himself just as vulnerable to Gabe to show him who he truly is. The epilogue shows us that they are on the path to building a life together it was so sweet and cozy I adored it.
This was a super fun and adorable read with some tense action in the climax. Some angst stemming from Gabe's own sense of self worth and his inner voice always cutting him down but buoyed by Alec trying to bring him back up.

Undercover is the fourth book in the Vino and Veritas series, set in Sarina Bowen’s World of True North. Every book in the series is a standalone and is written by a different author, so one can read any book without getting lost.

If there’s something I loved about Undercover, it was Gabe. He’s been kicked out of grad school and is kind of lost. He’s a science nerd, a rich kid, and really outgoing. He’s quirky and fun and self deprecating. He’s trying to find some balance in his life, to find his self respect and self worth. Books are one of his favorite things, so he spends a lot of time in the bookstore side of Vino and Veritas. And that’s where he comes across Alec, the older, tall dark and dangerous-looking guy he has a crush on.

Alec is really grumpy. He’s an undercover FBI agent investigating a drug smuggling operation. The thing is, he feels that this assignment is some kind of punishment, so his attitude is not the best. He gets involved with Gabe as a way to further his investigation. Gabe is a chemist and the son of the owner of one of the companies Alec suspects are involved in the drug smuggling. What he didn’t count on was developing feelings for Gabe that made his job extremely hard.

I’m not entirely sold on how Alec and Gabe started their acquaintance, but apart from that, I really enjoyed the book. It’s fun to watch Alec being his awkward self and trying to flirt, and Gabe is adorable and lovable from start to finish.

There’s emotional depth to the story, from both Gabe’s and Alec’s sides, and I really liked that. They both have some growing up to do, and their connection is strong in the end. And there’s some action too. It’s thrilling, really.

Undercover is a fun, light read, with emotional and heartfelt moments that give it depth. And there’s the thrill of the investigation, that give it a faster pace in the end. I really enjoyed reading the book.

Starting off with this one by saying while it was ok, I had a hard time getting into the story. While this is my first book by Eliot Grayson I was excited to dive in to a brand new to me author. However after the first few pages I knew this either wasn't the right time for this story or just not my style.

I did really like the characters of Gabe and Alec though. Gabe just wanting to prove that he is more than just some rich kid and it was sweet to watch him go after Alec. As for broody Alec, he was the one of the main elements that made me want to see how the story would go. Seeing Alec falling for Gabe as we progressed had me hoping for more but that isn't to say I didn't have issues with them being together.

The mystery elements tend to be hit or miss for me and with everything going on in Undercover, the mystery was a miss. I knew going into this it would have some elements of mystery with Alec being undercover and that meant not being able to tell Gabe the truth right away. Given Gabe's issues with trusting people just kind of turned me off from it because of the inevitable fall out that would occur. Also with Gabe's issues I felt that they weren't taken as seriously as they should have been. Going from there once the fall out occurred it felt so rushed on fixing everything and making everything right again.

So close to being one of those most special books to me that gets a full five stars. Alec and Gabe are spectacular with great chemistry and an instant attraction to each other. Alec being an FBI agent ticks my law enforcement button. The book has just enough details of the case he is working to satisfy this reader because this book is definitely focused on the romance.

Unfortunately, for me, the book would have better as a novella. I found myself getting distracted and struggling to get to the end of a chapter despite how much I adored the MCs and was determined to finish the book. It picked up the pace at around 50%. This is a new-to-me author so this might be their writing style. It had a little too much repetitive introspection to consistently hold my interest. That said, however, their initial meeting was unique and fun, the sex was 🔥🔥🔥, the dialogue was very good.

My favorite couple in the Vino and Veritas series so far and loved the crime solving element. I definitely recommend.

This is the first book I have read by this author but the 3rd in this series. I thought the characters were well developed and enjoyed the story line. I really liked the fact that Alec seemed to contemplate the results of certain actions before acting on them, especially given the self-esteem issues that Gabe was facing. I think this sort of thoughtfulness added to the romance building in this story. This book is definitely worth a read if you are looking for a light hearted, fun, MM romance to read.

This is a fun little story with likable characters a mystery crime plot with yoga mats and just a little bit of twinge in your heart when you think for a hot moment that all is lost. There is quite a lot of story packed into these less than 200 pages but only in a romance book would you get your happily ever after when you start a relationship founded on deception.

If you’re an FBI agent you really shouldn’t get involved with a possible criminal or even the relative of one. Pity is that that fact doesn’t seem to be getting through to Alec’s thinking mind. In fact it appears Gabe with his aqua streaked purple hair and multiple piercings has completely short circuited his brain. Furthermore Gabe’s brain doesn’t seem to be in any better repair. This is the very amusing tale of their romance. The acronym in the heading stands just as much for that story as it does for FBI. Well worth the read.

After being kicked out of his PhD program as a result of falling in with a party crowd, studious and Gabe is somewhat adrift and his self-esteem is at an all time low. Alec, an undercover FBI agent who just wants to solve his case and get the hell out of VT, catches his eye and the most awkward meet-cute ever ensues. Serendipitously, Gabe has a connection to Alec's case so it makes sense for Alec to befriend him while trying to tame the sparks that fly between them.

Hidden/secret identity is my favourite trope so I was predisposed to enjoy this book no matter what - undercover FBI agent? Yes. That. However, it took me a minute to warm up two the two MCs. Once they started spending more time together I was ready to go all in with the relationship (although with a great deal of suspended disbelief regarding Gabe's scholastic endeavours and Alec's investigative career).

I enjoyed the dating and chemistry between the two MCs, especially how Gabe's self-esteem flourished, but thought that Alec's "big case" should have been better fleshed out. I'd have enjoyed a little actual investigating and having Gabe come in with some chemistry knowledge that cracked things wide open would have been *chef's kiss* There were some missed opportunities to make this a really great story, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless. I also didn't love the aftermath of the reveal, the book wrapped up too quickly and while I thought the redemption gesture was sweet, I needed just a touch of groveling to really be satisfied.

At the end of the day I would likely pick up another book by this author if the synopsis piqued my interest, it was a great quick read when paired with a bottle of wine and a bubble bath.
