The Village of C Kindle Edition
Their rudimentary investigative skills lead them on a journey through the countryside, where they finally arrive at a strange structure not found on any of their maps. A tall, stone wall seemingly stretching for a mile in each direction. Mike and Sam know that whatever lies on the other side has something to do with the girls' disappearance.
Nothing can prepare them for what they are about to discover. It quickly becomes clear that they are not wanted in this mysterious, uncharted village, as Mike and Sam find themselves in a fight for survival against an army of robed maniacs. And why is everyone here so... old? All except for one; the beautiful Eve Lockwood.
To unlock the mysteries of the village and a curse known only as Centum, Mike and Sam will have to first survive the night.
Easier said than done when you're in The Village of C.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and Disturbing Folk Horror
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIsolation is the cause of many the happenings in folk horror, it allows communities to exist in a manner alien and often more brutal in comparison to the wider world and The Village of C is no exception. A cursed village, it is the worst place for anyone to enter accidentally and when Mike and Sam stumble into it on the hunt for their missing sister and daughter respectively, they soon discover the legend that holds it locked in time.
The Village of C includes those familiar tropes of folk horror: an isolated community, strangers in their midst, a skewed belief system, and the land as a character. The latter is exceptionally well-drawn adding to the atmosphere in terms of the boulders which enclose the village, the forest with its heavy and sickening air, the almost medieval village and its inhabitants as much prisoners as willing residents. It also carried echoes of Thomas Tryon's Harvest Home with a similar 'circular' element to it. If you've read that book, you will understand why the ending feels a little familiar when you get to the end of The Village of C.
The only thing which took me a bit out of the story was the use of some very modern terminology by residents of a village who would not have come across that language, cut off as they are from everyone else. Regardless of that, it's well-paced and compelling and one I didn't want to put down (I finished it over 2 days!)
Highly recommend to all folk horror lovers.
