From the Author
Who is WE the Change written for?
WE the Change is for people who have Big Ideas. People who want to create New Realities. It's for women of all ages--including young women with big dreams. But it's not just for women. It's an extraordinary roadmap for anyone yearning to transform their life, organization, or community. It's both inspirational and practical, and it guides the reader step-by-step through the challenging terrain we face when we want to launch something new.
What would you say to someone who has an idea but doesn't know where to begin, or doesn't feel they are capable of getting it done?
Starting anything new can feel overwhelming even for me, and this is my life's work. When I have an idea, I often start by sharing it with at least one other person. That person should be a Supporter--someone who cares about me and has my best interests at heart. Talking it through makes it more real. The collaboration enables me to be more creative about how to approach getting started.
What is the one question we should be asking ourselves when we are stuck and not moving forward with something we want to do?
The best question may sound simple, "What is getting in the way of achieving your goal?" This is the most direct question and the answer may be layered. When your first answer surfaces, dig deeper to understand how and why it is contributing to blocking your forward momentum.
Why is it so important to identify and engage supporters and other stakeholders in this process?
Identifying and engaging Supporters early in the process improves your chance of success. It is the first step I take once I have an understanding of the gap between where I want to be in the future and where I am starting from today. Supporters are the stakeholders who enthusiastically embrace the change you desire and are willing to advocate on your behalf. Opposers don't embrace it and actively work to block your success. We all have both groups in our lives. If an Opposer carries a lot of influence and power in your life, they can quickly derail you. Learning the Opposer's concerns so you can address them upfront is as important to success as engaging Supporters to help you achieve your goals.
How did your childhood experiences and your mother's story inspire you to write this book?
I grew up in a very humble single-parent home. My mother did not have a college education and could only find a minimum-wage job. We received government assistance for heat, food, and healthcare. In spite of her lack of education, she did have a special talent. She was an amazing artist who specialized in drawing children and characters. She routinely made drawings for friends and created her own cards. Often, she talked about launching her own business, a line of cards. But, like so many women, my mother was riddled with fear, self-doubt, and a belief that her ideas--and she herself--just weren't good enough. She couldn't see a step-by-step way out. She didn't know how to start. She quit before beginning.
My family experience caused me to further my education. I have dedicated my career to helping others improve their situations for themselves and their organizations. I am a student of transforming ideas into reality. I learned multiple approaches and blended the best of each into my own approach to enable my clients to achieve their objectives. I refined my approach over time, and then I wrote this book so women who have ideas would have a roadmap and toolkit to implement them.
What elements of your professional and personal experiences are reflected in this book?
I have more than thirty years of professional experience as well as a lifetime of personal vision, tenacity, and practice in launching big ideas and creating new realities. From Price Waterhouse Consulting to Microsoft, and from Grameen Foundation to smaller non-profits, I have worked with more than 20,000 leaders on six continents with the very tools found in this book. Do I use every single tool with every client? No. I select what makes the most sense for each situation. I've included as many as possible so you can find what works best for you.
Why does this book include a workbook, and how should readers use it?
Inspiration is not enough to launch a big idea or create a new reality. Stories, models, and case studies in other books about change are nice but don't help you implement your idea. You need tools and exercises to turn an idea into reality. The book is written in the spirit of my coaching practice. To use it for self-guided coaching, I recommend the following approach: read the Camino story completely to understand the story and approach. Next, read it again, chapter by chapter. After reading each chapter, work with the exercises in the parallel chapters found in the workbook. Chapter by chapter, you will create the plan to launch your Big Idea or create your New Reality. About the author

Anything is possible—it’s a phrase most people write off as a cliché. But not Shannon. Before she was a leadership consultant, before she was the senior executive at a Fortune 100 company, before she received her MBA from Duke, she was a young woman in a small town, from a humble home, with little hope of ever leaving. But she did leave and achieve, and she believes anything is possible. More importantly, Shannon believes you too can accomplish the remarkable, and she is here to help you make that happen. Bottom line—she’s not satisfied with “what ifs” that lead to “only ifs,” and you shouldn’t be either.
As a leadership consultant, Shannon pushes and inspires leaders to model the exemplary leadership that can transform companies, organizations, and communities. It’s a job she loves, and it’s given her the opportunity to work with remarkable people at incredible companies like Amazon, Coca-Cola, FedEx, Grameen Foundation, Guidehouse, Microsoft, Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, Trinity Education Foundation, United Planet, and Zillow.
But before she was helping senior leaders do the impossible, Shannon was one of them. At Microsoft, she became the first person to head up High Potential Leadership Development on a global level. How? By being the first person to both see the need and act on it. In the role, she led a global team of high-performers and managed a multi-million dollar budget. She also learned a lot; like no matter where you work or where you live, exemplary leadership cascades through an organization and makes everyone better.
Shannon is also the proud mother of two teenage daughters. She’s been happily married to her husband for twenty-two years and resides in Bellevue, WA, outside of Seattle. When she’s not supporting clients and organizations to embrace their highest potential, you can find her traveling the globe, exploring cultures, meeting new friends, and seeking connection, community, and . . . chocolate.

For the story and metaphor alone, I would recommend reading We the Change. Wallis includes a workbook related to each chapter and that's a huge value add. I love books that guide the reader into identifying the next steps, but she bumps it to the next level by throwing you right into the action. So much value when you act on it, so do it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021WE the Change is not only an inspiring story about overcoming obstacles and achieving greatness but a useful resource to help the reader achieve whatever "Big Ideas" or "New Realities" they want to. Shannon takes the reader with her along her journey on El Camino de Santiago, from the initial idea to the completion, then walks them through how they can also bring to life an idea that may seem daunting at first, but in the end could be life-enriching and maybe even life-changing. The book was hard to put down, and the workbook was easy to navigate while revealing complex truths about what may be stopping me from achieving the goals I wish to accomplish. It's a great resource for launching ideas from personal goals to business ventures.

She been massively successful and offers amazing insight on how to merge your calling with your career.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2021Shannon sets a powerful context in this book, what she calls her Big Idea--a 500-mile pilgrimage/walk across Spain, with comments on how she accomplished it and the important lessons she learned along the way. Her story is filled with wonder, fear, courage, and the power of pursuing something deeply important. She then uses that story as a template for helping anyone who has a Big Idea or wants a 'new reality.' So the second half of the book is a workbook, filled with great questions, models to shift and expand your thinking, and tips for building your own courage to pursue what matters most to you. I found the book beautifully written, filled with practical wisdom, and perfect for someone on the verge of their own big journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021WE the Change at one level details the challenges, hopes and dreams of one woman who sets out to walk the 500 mile pilgrimage El Camino de Santiago. On a deeper level Wallis is telling a story of how we can and must take on other challenges in life. The steps and phases she experiences on the Camino shed light on the phases we all experience when we choose to create more of the life and leadership we want. Her story of courage, vulnerability, fear and the joy of community ring true. The workbook that comes with the book is invaluable. If you’re ready for the next challenge or chapter in your life but are concerned you may not have the courage, or may not know how, or may fail this book is for you. You’re not alone! This book will be your guide.

It's easy to get stuck with a great idea and then have no idea how to actually do something with it. The author breaks down, step-by-step, the conditions necessary for creating lasting change. She weaves in her many years of expertise in organizational change with her personal experience of transformational change on El Camino de Santiago in Spain. There is special emphasis on "WE" ... or what we can do when we act together with others. The principles and lessons in this book would be useful to anyone, through there's a special emphasis on empowering women in implementing their big ideas.
