4.5 out of 5 stars 20,838 ratings

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes a bittersweet romance about the power of love in the face of heartbreak and loss.

Brooke Turner has always had a complicated relationship with her father. But when his health takes a turn for the worse, she drops everything to care for him. He’s her dad, after all, and he needs her. What Brooke doesn’t anticipate is the unraveling of her long-term relationship and a cross-country move to San Diego’s Little Italy.

Luca D’Angelo is the oldest of three children and a single father to a young daughter. When his mother rents the top floor of their house to Brooke, he’s angry. Who is this beautiful stranger with no ties to the neighborhood? Can she be trusted in such close proximity to his family?

As Luca learns of Brooke’s difficult journey with her ailing father, his heart softens. And Brooke, who witnesses Luca’s struggle as a single parent, develops feelings for him, too. But when it all falls apart, will love heal their wounded hearts?

I am in love with this book!
I'm so excited to introduce Catherine Bybee's brand-new book When It Falls Apart. This story will grab your heart and take off running with it. The characters, plot, and setting captivated me. Although it contains some sexual content and profanity, it is not graphic. Bybee masterfully combines real-life situations concerning family, love, and romance for an intriguing plot. Synopsis: Brooke Turner has to make a sudden move to San Diego's Little Italy district. Because Brooke's dad is ill she needs to live close by to help care for him. It is while Brooke is there that she meets Luca D'Angelo and his huge loving Italian family. Luca has an adorable daughter named Fanny who was abandoned by her mom at a young age. Luca is very protective of Fanny. Can Luca trust Brooke with his daughter Fanny? When It Falls Apart is available on June 21st. Kudos to Catherine Bybee for writing this beautiful novel. Thank you, NetGalley and Montlake, for allowing me to review this delightful book. I have my fingers crossed for a sequel.

I absolutely LOVED When It Falls Apart by Catherine Bybee, the first book in her new D’Angelos series. I love that Catherine Bybee continues to author the books that I love to read. I can honestly say that When It Falls Apart is one of the most enjoyable books that I have read recently, and I loved this amazing and personal story. When It Falls Apart is a beautifully written story about perseverance and dealing with all of life's shortcomings. I loved every page and could not put it down! One of my favorite parts of the story was the author's note and the acknowledgements, where Catherine discloses her own real-life experiences that lead to her writing such a personal story. I am truly in awe of Catherine for writing such an amazing personal story and she continues to prove that she is an incredible storyteller. When It Falls Apart is a wonderful love story, filling me with a rollercoaster of emotions and I could not put it down. I loved every moment on every page. I love the incredible love story, the setting, and the amazing characters! Catherine Bybee definitely does not disappoint her readers with all the feels in When It Falls Apart and has once again delivered an amazing story filled with everything that I have come to love and expect in her books, especially the amazing characters, they feel like family! Catherine Bybee did not disappoint, especially with the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. I love how Catherine develops her characters in such a way that you fall in love with them and care about them like a good friend. Catherine Bybee continues to deliver all that and so much more. I am not sure how she does it, but Catherine Bybee has once again given her readers another remarkable book. When It Falls Apart is filled with all the heartbreaking and heartwarming moments and plot twists, that I have come to love and expect in a Catherine Bybee love story, I especially loved the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud. My favorite moments are the ones that pull at my heartstrings that cause me to sigh, as I read the heartbreaking moments. When It Falls Apart is filled with such moments, and with so much emotion. When It Falls Apart is the story of Brooke Turner and Gianluca “Luca” D’Angelo, chef at his family’s restaurant, D’Angelo’s, and single father of Francesca “Franny.” Brooke is her father, Joe’s advance care director for health issues. The story begins with a phone call to Brooke regarding a medical emergency involving her father. Brooke drops everything and flies to be with her father. Brooke’s life changes because of her father’s health. She moves her father into an assisted living facility, and she relocates to San Diego’s Little Italy and ends up renting a room above D’Angelo’s. Luca meets with Brooke when she is moving her belongings into her room. There is instant chemistry between Brooke and Luca. I loved the heart-to-heart conversation between Brooke and Luca, where she reveals everything that about her relationship with her father and his marriages, her mother’s relationships, and her last relationship with Marshall and Luca reveals everything about his marriage and divorce. When It Falls Apart is an amazing love story; I am so glad that Brooke and Lou got the happily ever after once again. I loved all the surprises that filled the pages of this love story, especially the necklaces that Luca gives to Brooke and Franny. I love Brooke’s relationship with Franny. I love all the changes that Brooke and Luca willingly make to have a life together. I love the plot twist that threatens Brooke and Luca’s relationship. My favorite part was Luca's proposal and the location of the proposal. I love how the epilogue completes the happily ever after. When It Falls Apart it filled with outstanding characters, wonderful descriptions of the setting, and incredible plot twists. Catherine Bybee's descriptions are so real, I was right there with Brooke in Little Italy. I loved Luca’s Mom, Mari, and the life lessons that she passes along to Brooke. I felt like I was really related to her. I love that Catherine Bybee always writes about strong women. When It Falls Apart is filled with the bittersweet and poignant moments, that I have come to love and expect in Catherine Bybee's books. I love that Brooke got her happily ever after even if she did not even realize that she wanted one. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Highly recommend this love at first sight love story.

I really enjoyed When It Falls Apart! Catherine Bybee did a great job blending romance, family drama, and personal growth into a story that felt both real and heartwarming.

Brooke is such a likable main character, and her journey—especially dealing with family responsibilities—really resonated with me. And Luca? Total dream guy. The chemistry between them was sweet and natural, and I loved how their relationship developed. Plus, the Italian family dynamic added so much warmth and charm!

The only reason I’m giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is that some parts felt a little predictable—I was hoping for a few more twists. But overall, it’s a great feel-good romance with a lot of heart. Definitely worth reading if you love stories about love, family, and second chances!
