In this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller from Harlan Coben, a dead man's secrets fall into the hands of a vigilante antihero—drawing him down a dangerous road.

Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors — and the items stolen from her family were never recovered.

Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead — not only on Patricia's kidnapping, but also on another FBI cold case — with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

Windsor Horne Lockwood III — or Win, as his few friends call him — doesn't know how his suitcase and his family's stolen painting ended up with a dead man. But his interest is piqued, especially when the FBI tells him that the man who kidnapped his cousin was also behind an act of domestic terrorism — and that the conspirators may still be at large. The two cases have baffled the FBI for decades, but Win has three things the FBI doesn't: a personal connection to the case; an ungodly fortune; and his own unique brand of justice.

With over 80 million books in print worldwide, Harlan Coben is the #1 New York Times author of thirty five novels including WIN, THE BOY FROM THE WOODS, RUN AWAY, FOOL ME ONCE, TELL NO ONE and the renowned Myron Bolitar series. His books are published in 46 languages around the globe.

Harlan is the creator and executive producer of several Netflix television dramas including FOOL ME ONCE, STAY CLOSE, THE STRANGER, SAFE, THE FIVE, THE INNOCENT and THE WOODS. He is also the creator and executive producer of the Prime Video series Harlan Coben’s SHELTER, based on his young adult books featuring Mickey Bolitar. Harlan was the showrunner and executive producer for two French TV mini-series, UNE CHANCE DE TROP (NO SECOND CHANCE) and JUST UN REGARD (JUST ONE LOOK). KEINE ZWEIT CHANCE, also based on Harlan’s novel, aired in Germany on Sat1.

Harlan’s novel TELL NO ONE (NE LE DIS A PERSONNE) was turned into the renowned French film, directed by Guillaume Canet and starring Francois Cluzet. The movie was the top box office foreign-language film of the year in the USA, won the Lumiere (French Golden Globe) for best picture and was nominated for nine Cesars (French Oscar) and won four, including best actor, best director and best music.

Winner of the Edgar Award, Shamus Award and Anthony Award – the first author to win all three – international bestselling author Harlan Coben’s critically-acclaimed novels have been called “ingenious” (New York Times), “poignant and insightful” (Los Angeles Times), “consistently entertaining” (Houston Chronicle), “superb” (Chicago Tribune) and “must reading” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

In his first books, Coben immersed himself in the exploits of sports agent Myron Bolitar. Critics loved the series, saying, “You race to turn pages…both suspenseful and often surprisingly funny” (People). After seven books Coben wanted to try something different. “I came up with a great idea that simply would not work for Myron,” says Coben. The result was the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller TELL NO ONE, which became the most decorated thriller of the year. Two books later, Bookspan, recognizing Coben’s broad international appeal, named NO SECOND CHANCE its first ever International Book of the Month in 2003 – the Main Selection in 15 different countries.

Harlan was the first writer in more than a decade to be invited to write fiction for the NEW YORK TIMES op-ed page. His Father’s Day short story, THE KEY TO MY FATHER, appeared June 15, 2003. His essays and columns have appeared in many top publications including the New York Times, Parade Magazine and Bloomberg Views.

Harlan has received an eclectic variety of honors from all over the world. In Paris, he was awarded the prestigious Vermeil Medal of Honor for contributions to culture and society by the Mayor of Paris. He has won the El Premio del Novela Negra RBA in Spain, the Grand Prix de Lectrices in France, and the CWA/ITV3 Bestseller Dagger for favorite crime novelist in England. On the other end of the spectrum, Little League Baseball inducted Harlan into their Hall of Excellence in 2013, and Harlan is also a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame from his playing days at Amherst College.

Harlan was born in Newark, New Jersey. He still lives in New Jersey with his wife, Anne Armstrong-Coben MD, a pediatrician, and their four children.

A MUST READ!
Dollycas’s Thoughts We originally met Windsor Horne Lockwood III as a character in Coben’s Myron Boltar series. “Win”, Bolitar’s best friend now stars in his own story and what looks to be his own series if he survives to the end of this thriller. A murder has occurred on the Upper West Side and the FBI picks up Win because there is evidence in the recluse’s penthouse that points directly at Mr. Windsor Horne Lockwood III. The death may also be connected to a cold case close to Win. His cousin, Patricia was kidnapped over 20 years ago. She escaped but her captors were never caught. Now, with these new clues, Win decides it is time he starts his own investigation. It is past time to dole out a bit of justice and Win is just the man to deliver it. “Articulate”. Windsor Horne Lockwood III is a flawed character with way too much money and a sense of privilege because of it. He gets away with everything because he has the money and connections to insolate him from any repercussions for things he has done. He has a full-time assistant, a private plane, a keen sense to right wrongs as he sees them in any way he can. An expert fighter he believes he is invincible. His money also gains him membership in an exclusive dating/sex club which enables him to take part in “no strings attached” one-night stands. The man is clearly driven to get to the truth in a case that goes back to the 1970s but there are people out there whose mission it is to make sure he doesn’t get it. But Win likes violence and isn’t afraid to use it. He does have a softer side brought out by only one person and his love and admiration for Myron Bolitar shines within these pages. He also has a troubled soul and some insecurities to deal with. Win is a complicated character and exactly the kind of character I expect to find from this author. Mr. Coben has written such a complex suspense-filled story. He introduces readers to several diverse characters and entangles them in a multitude of ways throughout the book. At first, I thought I was going to have trouble keeping them all straight but they are dynamically crafted to stand out as the two mysteries evolve. The story is very fast-paced but it is not a book to rush through. There are twists on top of twists and surprises almost around every corner. The final twist brought me to a full stop. It was classic Coben and I should have been prepared. I know to expect the unexpected when I pick up any Harlan Coben book. There is a reason he is my favorite suspense author and I look forward to each new title. As a fan, I have been waiting for Windsor Horne Lockwood III to have his own story for years and was absolutely giddy when the book went up for pre-order. I have been counting down the days to today, its release date to share my thoughts with you. Don’t panic if you have not read the Bolitar series because this book works perfectly as a stand-alone. If this is your first experience with this author I encourage you to read any and all of his previous titles as they are all excellent. WIN has set this series off to a fantastic start. Definitely a must-read for suspense lovers. I can’t wait to see what Harlan Coben has in store for Windsor Horne Lockwood III next.

For me, this is a tricky one to review. Pros and Cons: the pros were enough to keep me reading and I finished it in a day and a half. So that's not nothing. The pacing was excellent - I am an impatient reader and this was a no-fluff who dunnit that read like an episode of Law & Order SVU. Some things aren't quite plausible but that kinda goes with the territory: when you read or watch a mystery or a thriller, don't you find yourself questioning things or saying, that's not really believable? That would never happen. I do, and I said it during this book a couple times, but it isn't bad enough that I wouldn't recommend this for a long flight: It's not going to knock your socks off but it is very entertaining.
    For me, The Cons:
I didn't know going in that this builds on a previously established set of characters so I kept thinking, who is this Myron guy that Win keeps talking about, bringing him up over and over without ever being in the story! I'm thinking it's his split personality or something! Every time he's mentioned it just made it obvious that this guy is his other murdering personality -- until another character mentions Myron and that ruined that theory. Second, what is up with him answering his phone "articulate"?? Not once, but no less than ten times in the book. Dumb. The author did not need to describe him answering his phone so many times, and with that dumb greeting. Ok, and the brand-dropping got old. I realize it goes to establish that the character is rich and vain, and loves name brands, but I do not care about name brands, and it was overkill, and wasted on me- I don't know or care what brands he wore and it came off as smug and vane. Again, establishes the character, I realize. Thankfully it died down so we didn;t have to hear about the brand of shoes he was wearing or the brand of pen he was writing with, the make of car, brand and color of shirt, etc past about the half-way point. Whew. This character was not very likeable. You don't have to love every character but this guy's ego was something else! One reviewer said that Win would make the perfect date. Huh? As long as you rated at least a 7 on his rich-guy dating app. He wasn't my favorite but I'm not saying I wouldn't revisit the series or try something else written by Coban.

Harlan Coben’s new novel is something of a return to his roots. ‘Win’ is Windsor Horne Lockwood, III, Myron Bolitar’s best friend. Win functions as what I have termed the ‘avenging angel’ character: like Spenser’s Hawk or Elvis Cole’s Joe Pike, an invincible figure who can be turned to in a pinch, particularly a pinch requiring the old ultra-violence. The difference with Win is that he appears unassuming, like Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, but he has endless wealth, an armory of weapons, deadly martial arts skills and few scruples. His superhero power (he says here) is his wealth and he compares himself explicitly with Bruce Wayne. In his fascination with and demand for premium goods carrying exquisite brand names he reminds us also of James Bond. Though he has never been on her Majesty’s Secret Service he spent a brief period of time in the FBI.

Here he gets his own novel and he also gets to narrate it. His relationship with the reader is by turns coy, slightly arrogant, deadly honest, endearing and annoying. He knows that he must be faithful to himself but that may irritate the reader; he says as much in a number of direct addresses, when he breaks the narrative wall between us.

The story is very complex (but always intelligible). A body has turned up in an expensive apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. An elderly man has had his throat slit. On his wall is a Vermeer that was stolen from the Lockwood family decades ago. Decades ago Win’s uncle was murdered and decades ago his cousin was abducted and raped for five months before she was able to escape from a tiny shed (the ‘hut of horrors’) in the Pennsylvania woods. Win’s old FBI handler/mentor/friend asks Win to investigate and determine the perpetrator of all of these things. The NYC mob is also interested and, as we soon learn, the case ultimately involves the doings of a domestic terrorist group (the ‘Jane Street Six’) who have been on the lam for a long, long time.

I am a sucker for domestic terrorist group stories (having been at Wisconsin for the bombing of Sterling Hall) and this is a fascinating one. Win is determined to get to the bottom of things and when he is thus determined there is nothing that can stop him.

The story is set in New York and mainline Philadelphia, with Win shuttling hither and yon on private jets, helicopters . . . whatever it takes. Win has always been a solid, offbeat character, and who doesn’t like the lifestyles of the rich, famous and deadly? The principal theme here is something like ‘being faithful to oneself, one’s family and one’s roots, even when they lead to conflict’ but the real star is the story. Investigations are always more interesting when you’re richer than God and prepared to use that wealth in ingenious ways.

Bottom line: a solid Harlan Coben novel but with a familiar protagonist we have always wanted to know better. Whether we love him or not is our problem (Win would be quick to point out).

The story gives you lots of up and down emotions plus surprises at the end.

    Warning - gushing review ahead!

As a long time reader and fan of Harlan Coben novels, Win is a familiar character to me. I was so excited when I heard that there was going to be a book (and a series?? please a series!!) focusing on Win. I wanted to read this book with no interruptions and I managed to read it in a day. I really didn't want it to end, even as my eyes were struggling to stay open.

If you have ever read any of the Myron Bolitar books you will know Win - Windsor Horne Lockwood III. Win is Myron's best friend, his right hand man who pushes the limits of the law. His name, his money and his reputation get him along way and gets him results. I wouldn't want to agree with him that is for sure. His family and Myron come first, loyal to a fault. He come across as rough and arrogant, but deep down he is insecure and troubled. Being from old money brings its share of problems as well, I absolutely loved getting to know more about him, and understanding a bit better why he is like he is.

This is a case that is personal to Win. A recluse, hoarder, an old man is found murdered in his penthouse apartment in New York. Police ask Win to come to the crime scene as they have found something that belongs to his family - a painting that was stolen many years ago. As he starts to look into why and how this man had the artwork, he discovers links to another family event that has never been solved. The more he looks, the more somebody wants him to stop.

The twists in this story were just fantastic. At no time did I guess what was going to happen next and the ending blew my mind . Harlan Coben is a master storyteller, his books are addictive and always leave you wanting more. That is why he is one of my all time favourite writers, and I will buy his books without reading the blurb.

If you have never read a Coben book - why? You seriously need to amend that and get reading - there are so many fantastic books for you to catch up on. While Win is a character from the Myron books, this book can be read easily as a standalone. That being said, it will make you want to grab the other books.

I bought this book a couple of years ago now and I've been hanging onto it but STILL he's not released a second in Win's own series, which is really disappointing. Especially as it was so good. I have never been a great fan of his Myron series, preferring his standalone stories myself, but since I sort of "knew" Win and my brother raved about it (as he's also not a fan of the other series) I bought it and waited.....and waited.....to read it after he released the next instalment. I always wait on pricedrops cos' I'm a cheapskate !! Anyway, in the end I thought it high time I just jump right in and read it anyway.
It was very good indeed and I do hope he comes back to it at some point soon. His snarky little asides are highly amusing (and the author often has his own in his acknowledgements which I always look forward to). I am left wondering what it is about Nevada, Wyoming and Delaware that they're "good" states to be anonymous in...wish he'd explained that to us non-Americans. I do know who Geraldo is, however, and I have a video paused waiting to watch the Al Capone fail thing that's mentioned herein !! I chuckled at the reference to pinkos as well as I haven't heard that expression in years !!
It was a cracking story and the only mistake I spotted was one set of dropped speechmarks which is bloody good going in this digital age, where most publishers and authors don't seem to give a toss how their books are presented in this particular format. It drives me to utter distraction.
So this comes highly recommended...I think there's been a film made as well so I will look that up later, too. I just hope we get another story in this vein.
