Life isn’t fair. Chris Whitaker’s intimate novel makes that common bit of folk wisdom feel absolutely poetic. The story itself is beautifully simple: A rebellious 13-year-old girl named Duchess and a guilt-ridden small-town police chief form an unexpected bond over a 30-year-old crime. Both of these unforgettable characters want nothing more than to protect the people they love from further pain. Whitaker sensitively captures the experiences of struggling individuals for whom happiness can be as fleeting as a sunset. We were particularly taken by the way Duchess deals with all the emotional weight on her shoulders by imagining herself as a Wild West outlaw. Whitaker’s young heroine reminded us of iconic fictional figures like Jo March and Scout Finch. And yes, We Begin at the End is that good.

Amazing
One of the best books I’ve ever read. I don’t read a ton of novels but I was blown away by this book.
We Begin at the End
This book took me a long time to read, but I really wanted to finish it because it was our book club selection. The ending was worth plowing through the rest of the book, though. It was unexpected to say the least!
So Good
One of the best books I have ever read. You truly care about the characters. I couldn’t put it down. I read another review that compared it to “To Kill a Mockingbird.” I agree with the comparison. So beautifully written. One I wish I could read again for the first time.
