Western Waves: An Arranged Marriage Romance (The Compass Series) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,180 ratings

I always believed in fairy tales, but he believed in nightmares.

Damian Blackstone didn’t care about my existence. He came into my world for one reason only. He came to find answers about his past.

He moved like the villain in my favorite fairy tales. He wasn’t the one who received the happily ever afters; he was the one who destroyed them.

Which was why I couldn’t understand why the man who raised me set it up in his will for Damian and me to be married. I wasn’t certain I’d be able to live with a man like Damian. We were as opposite as any two people could be. I loved to bathe in the sunlight while he prospered in the shadows.

I didn’t think I’d develop feelings for the one who looked at me as if I were nothing more than a means to an end. Yet in his darkness, sometimes I’d see sparks of light. I’d see gentleness. I’d see his soul.

We became entangled with one another as we fell into mistakes and called them fate. I was his Cinderella, and he was my Beast.

I wasn’t certain that twisted fairy tales ended with happily ever afters.
Still, I was determined to find out.

A love that intertwined into two souls to become one

A love that intertwined into two souls to become one
Western Waves, the third book in the Compass Series, is one I have been anticipating for quite some time. Damian is introduced back in book 2 and you can’t help but love his character, even with his rough edges. His story compelled me even before I opened this book. What surprised me was Stella. She appeared to be the exact opposite to Damian. The reality was, she pushed her emotions aside for the betterment of overs, while Damian was comfortable with his dark past. These two characters intrigued me. They were nothing alike, yet as the book continued, their similarities were more evident. Damian and Stella come together in a very different way. They are forced to be together but at some point that line is crossed and there is no forcing their pull towards one another. It was as if their life had led to their meeting and their future couldn’t continue without their souls being intertwined. I don’t want to give much away regarding Damian and Stella. I think what I loved most was the surprise this story took me on. It was at moments making me laugh, while at others, making me cry. I felt their emotions so deeply. I empathized with their feelings of anxiety and fear. Each of these books from the series can be read as a standalone, but having their stories come together from one book to another, in my opinion, only intensifies the unique nature of each story. I highly recommend you start with book one and move forward from there. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊/5 🔥/5 Thank you Brittainy Cherry for putting this beautiful story out for us to read. Trigger warning ⚠️ This story does pull from darkness. Suicide, miscarriage and cheating are discussed.

Damian: For so many years of my life, people sent me away. Now, I never let people close enough to have that opportunity. Besides, I liked being alone. Loneliness was safe. People couldn’t hurt you when you were by yourself.

Damian was introduced in Eastern Lights (book #2) as Connor’s best friend. We knew he was distant and cold. But we also saw his softer side. Poor Damian. He doesn’t trust anyone. Everyone he’s know has left him. Then there’s the light to his darkness. Stella. She wears her heart on her sleeve. Talks to her departed mother thru the waves of the ocean. Stella is determined to find the softer side of Damian who becomes her husband for six months according to the terms of a will from her adopted father. And Damian’s father he never knew. So it begins… with the nicknames of Cinderstella and The Beast, there appears to be much more at stake besides a truck load of money in this arranged marriage. Why did Damian’s father put these two together? You’ll see as their story unfolds.

Stella will break your heart. “When did I stop loving myself?” She asks Damian. She’s been treated horribly. Her confidence ruined. Her happy and smiling personality hides so much sadness. Damian will break your heart too. Shoved in and out of foster homes as a kid. Wondering about the father he never knew. The father who raised Stella. As his heart starts to soften for Stella, you just know that these two are meant to heal each other. Their journey is tough. Their love story is anything but ordinary. But this is a beautiful story of hope and accepting love. You’ll never forget Damian and Stella’s journey.

I’ve always loved contemporary romance with a fairytale feel at this time of year, and if the so-called villain is a beast of a man and the heroine has a beautiful heart, better still. Western Waves is the third standalone novel in the Compass Series and although I haven’t read the previous two books, I didn’t feel like I’d missed out on anything.

Cherry’s spun her story with a mix of The Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. However, instead of three wicked stepsisters, Stella Maple has to contend with three evil-minded stepmothers. Here, the author went to town with the character development. It was simply impossible to like them and so easy to fall for her.

It was a pleasure peeling back Damien Blackstone’s layers and finding out what made him tick. When he’s given little choice but to live under the same roof as Stella, avoiding her is going to be a feat in itself. Her being on the end of his sharp tongue upset me though. His attitude also caught the attention of the few folks he trusts, so unless they can convince him otherwise, I asked myself what he’d do to make things better.

If you love people-pleasers, Stella’s your gal. But for me, this trait can often do more harm than good. It’s not just about carrying out everyone’s wishes or doing what is expected; it’s about learning to love yourself and build self-confidence. I won’t say much more as I don’t want to spoil this read for you, but—a third person’s conduct riled me to the point of wanting to shout out loud! That said, I adored Stella’s inquisitiveness, her generous heart and how she always managed to look on the bright side despite her issues.

While I’m rather partial to the hero and heroine fighting against their feelings, there has to be a solid reason. Here Cherry cracked it. So, not only do Damien and Stella have to find out the whys and wherefores of the complex situation they’re in but also deal with it together. Will they be on the same wavelength after all is revealed? Only one way to find out. Read their story!

Spot on editing and narrative flow, snappy banter and a pleasant surprise at the ending makes for a swoony romance that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to my book buddies.

Gosh, this book still has me in it's grips. It's been a week, and I'm finally able to review it. I have talked this book up to so many of my friends. (That's usual for me after reading a Brittainy Cherry book.) I loved the nicknames, the back and forth. I loved the curvy girl pov, the interracial aspect, the opposites attract ugh! so much to love.
When I first read about the arranged marriage, I'll be honest I wasn't interested. I of course was going to read it regardless, but that wasn't my bait. As I started reading it, Stella was so chaotic and messy I thought for sure she had some kind of OCD or Autism trait causing her to react the way she did over a scone. I was scared for Damien ha! As the story unfolded, I was so enraptured I didn't do much of anything except finish the book.
Can we talk about the steamy scenes for a moment? Oooh Lord have mercy! Cherry knows how to write! Golly gee, my sheets about caught fire reading her words! Usually it gets so drawn out I end up skipping paragraphs to get through the scene. I was reading every. Word. Whoo, it was intense! Beast was the perfect nickname for Damien in ALL accounts.
I love the witchy side of the story with Grams, the water element playing a large roll for everyone. I feel better talking to the waves as well.
There were some minor inconsistencies that bothered me, but overall didn't take away from the story.
It's a must read for me.

Broody Damian meets his match! I loved watching the broody grump lighten up and to see all the ways he showed up for Stella!! The way this man takes care of her? Swoon. I’m always a sucker for a marriage of convenience, and I really enjoyed Damian & Stella. Like the rest of this series, this one tugged on allllll the heartstrings and definitely hurt, but was oh so worth it. Damian and Stella both deserve the world, and my heart was so happy to see them get their happily ever after.

I loved this book so so much. It made me cry happy and sad tears. Stella made me laugh with her relatable awkwardness and I admire her heart. Damian, well all I can say is we should all be so lucky to have a Damian in our corner. This book was so beautifully written, a top read for sure.

Brittany Cherry is undoubtedly one of the most talented author's I've ever come across. Every book of hers has it's own emotional story and she makes it seem like a real life fairytale.
Stella & Damian had the perfect grump-sunshine dynamic. Stella always saw the good in people and tended to ignore their flaws and because of that trait, I'm not gonna lie, I sometimes wanted to get into the book and smack her out of her oblivion but her cute personality and witty sense of humor made me love her a lot! She always brought out the hidden playful and humorous side that Damien had without even trying. This is a marriage of convenience trope so obviously both Stella & Damien knew that their marriage was namesake but their budding friendship and care for each other certainly wasn't fake. Damien preferred to stay alone and allowed only a handful people he loved and trusted to be close to him and it was beautiful to see Stella slowly forming her way inside his little bubble!
Overall, while there was some amazing banter that never failed to make me laugh, the book dealt with some heavy and emotional topics too which gave me all the feels and some parts made me cry and hurt for both Stella & Damien. The side characters were definitely another level of crazy and entertaining and of course Stella's personality was so fun because she was a naive and loving soul. Grayson was broken and alone from a childhood with a sad past and the part where her met his bestfriend Connor really made me cry but it was a beautiful story!

🇮🇹Ho amato ogni singola parola.

Damian was one of my favorite characters already in the previous book. His story breaks your heart but you know that there is something under his cold behaviour. Stella is so pure, so gentle, so kind, too much for the life she lived before Damian came in. The sweetness, the power of the self journey, the princess and the beast. This book is a masterpiece 🥲
