I saw this in our cruise's library. The author's note said it could be read as a standalone and boy was she wrong. I finished it within two days and as soon as we got to port, I borrowed the first one on Libby. Interestingly, book two is not a year later (as some reviews say), it is merely a few weeks later. As I Googled to see if I completely missed something, I found that several people complained about the pace of book two. If you're debating this series, I would advocate reading it 2,1,3 so that you can get the character building out of the way first. Yes there will be some holes but book one will still give you ah-ha moments.

    I have been surprised at the negative reviews of these books...most complaining about the books ending on cliffhangers so they have to buy the next book! Well...no...you don't have to buy it, check it out at your library, read it online...whatever...Ms Hilderbrand is not twisting your arm to buy her books, she's writing books for you to read! That's her job and for the most part she is pretty good at it! I for one have liked the cliffhangers, however, I don't really like the characters so much, hence, my four stars instead of five. The storyline is mysterious and the island descriptions make me want to go to the beach. I find I don't like any of the women characters but am still interested in this story and what happens. And...oh yeah...on page 60 of the first book and throughout the book, the pilot's name is Stephen Thompson, then on page 316 of the second book, his name is Stephen Johnson! Confused me for a minute! Proofreaders have such a great job and some are just plain lousy at that job! I recommend these books and definitely plan to read the final one!

    I really enjoyed the first book in this series but this one was disappointing. I'm tired of Ayers' and Baker's drama and Rosie's journals show her to be a weak, foolish woman who stays involved with despicable Russ despite the fact that he remains very much married and involved with his family. Rosie is fond of saying love is complicated and messy. Well, duh, love is guaranteed to be complicated and messy when you get involved with a married man. A man who, in addition to being a liar and a cheat, is involved in money laundering (eye roll). If nothing else, Maia deserved better. I like the characters of Irene, Huck, Maia, Cash and Tilda but not enough to read the third book in this series.

    I am enjoying this series very much. My husband's job took us to St. Croix for several years. We got certified for diving and joined the dive club. We have many fond memories of the USVI and the BVI. It is nice to relate to places mentioned in the books. Been there did that! We were there for Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. We were living in home on top of a hill overlooking Christiansted. The views were spectacular. I was born and grew up on the Texas coast, lived through Hurricane Carla in 1961. When we had to come back to Texas I became very depressed. The books are bringing back some good memories for me. I'm 79, and my short-term memory is failing fast. But thanks for this series. I have been enjoying them.
