"The story’s message, that people should choose joy even (and especially) in difficult and painful times, seems tailor-made for this moment. A timely, uplifting read about finding joy in the midst of tragedy, filled with quirky characters and comforting warmth."―Kirkus (starred review)

From the
New York Times bestselling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new novel full of heart and hope.

Samantha Casey is a school librarian who loves her job, the kids, and her school family with passion and joy for living.
But she wasn’t always that way.
Duncan Carpenter is the new school principal who lives by rules and regulations, guided by the knowledge that bad things can happen.
But he wasn’t always that way.

And Sam knows it. Because she knew him before―at another school, in a different life. Back then, she loved him―but she was invisible. To him. To everyone. Even to herself. She escaped to a new school, a new job, a new chance at living. But when Duncan, of all people, gets hired as the new principal there, it feels like the best thing that could possibly happen to the school―and the worst thing that could possibly happen to Sam. Until the opposite turns out to be true. The lovable Duncan she’d known is now a suit-and-tie wearing, rule-enforcing tough guy so hell-bent on protecting the school that he’s willing to destroy it.

As the school community spirals into chaos, and danger from all corners looms large, Sam and Duncan must find their way to who they really are, what it means to be brave, and how to take a chance on love―which is the riskiest move of all.

With Katherine Center’s sparkling dialogue, unforgettable characters, heart, hope, and humanity,
What You Wish For is the author at her most compelling best.

What a BEAUTIFUL book!!! Must read!

What a BEAUTIFUL book!!! Must read!
What You Wish For is categorized as romance, and I would agree, there is definitely a romance element, but it felt like SO much more than that. There is hope, grief, inspiration, and friendship all mixed into this beautiful story! The descriptions that are used to help the reader visualize the world are amazing. I bounced back and forth between reading and listening, and in both cases, the level of detail was still exquisite. There are so many moments where I felt descriptions were extremely important to the story, and Katherine Center nailed it each time! There’s a hat at one moment in the story, and it’s just a hat. But it’s so much more than that when you read the book, and without the lovely descriptions, that moment would have fallen flat for me, but instead, it completely warmed my heart! The characters are fabulous. Each one is built with thought and detail to give them a full life, not just a moment in time during this story. Sam is so full of love, for reading, for children, for her school, and I could FEEL just how much she loved each thing. Especially her unrequited love for Duncan. Sam was someone I connected to immediately, and I loved her story. Duncan tugged at my heartstrings again and again. I literally cried during moments of his story because they were so filled with emotion. Amazing!! Overall, I clearly loved this book. It was written beautifully and brought amazing characters to life. I cannot wait to get my hands on another one of her books!! Content Warnings: !!SPOILER!! I need to add this content warning, but if you don’t care, nothing ever bothers you when reading a book, then skip to the “To Read or Not to Read” section please!! —— On to the spoiler/content warning – There is a character in this book that was involved in a school shooting. There are descriptions of their experience in the shooting, the injuries, the medical recovery, the mental and physical scars. This could be a trigger for some people. To Read or Not To Read: I would recommend What You Wish For to readers that enjoy falling into a character’s life and truly living their experiences and surroundings! I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

This is my second book that I've read by Katherine Center and I really enjoyed this book. I feel that the message for this story is to choose joy, even during difficult times. I'm going to attempt to write my review without giving away too much. I don't enjoy reading reviews that give the twists away so hopefully that won't happen here!

Samantha (Sam) works as a school librarian and has chosen to live with color and fun in her life. She has a medical issue that she deals with and it definitely causes her to be apprehensive at times. Sam's 'crush', Duncan, from a previous school ends up coming to her current school as the new principal. The Duncan that comes to the school is not what Sam remembers and as you read the story you will find out why. I'm a teacher and reading this book was definitely difficult at times because some of the events that happened are an unfortunate possibility for me to experience, however, I am so glad I read this story and the events didn't overshadow the joy that was clearly in this book.

I originally received this book as an ARC and ended up not being able to read it immediately (again... teacher here and I was adjusting to teaching my elementary students online due to Covid so life was a little crazy!). The day that this book was published (July 14, 2020) I decided to purchase the Audible version, and I must tell you, I am SO GLAD that I did!! The narrator pulled me into the story & I listened to it within a day and half. I couldn't put it down!! At the end of the audible story, Katherine Center had a portion that she shared with the listeners, Reading for Joy. The words she said were not written in the Kindle version that I have, however, I am beyond glad I listened to the book!! I have no idea if what she said is available written somewhere, however, I want to share some of the points she made. The following things she said struck me in such a way that I wrote them down on the closest thing I had... a napkin... and I'm keeping them with my reading materials. Statements from her that I'd like to share: "Reading for Joy is Reading from your Heart", A good story makes you feel what is happening to the character & makes you feel empathy. As a reader you feel the characters feelings as if you're the character and experiencing it yourself. When reading/watching t.v. or a movie you know it's not real or true but you believe it anyways as if it is really happening & a true story. I loved when Katherine Center said "... twinkling unfathomable milky way of possibilities..." Readers should Read for Joy & that stories can save you.

All of the things I just said in the previous paragraphs are directly from Katherine Center. I tried to write it exactly like she said, however, some of it may not be quite exact. All of the things she stated are exactly how I felt when reading this story. She had me feeling empathy for the characters, laughing, crying, afraid, worried, and I felt like I was reading (actually listening to since I was listening to the Audible version) the right story at the right moment in my life. Kudos to Katherine Center for writing an amazing book filled with LOTS of feels. I've only read 2 books of hers now, however, time permitting I plan to look into more books of hers so I can 'Read for Joy' and experience things I never thought possible. Thank you so very much to Netgalley, St. Martin's Press & Katherine Center for ARC. Although I ended up listening to the Audible, I think this book is amazing!!

In "What You Wish For," Katherine Center introduces us to Samantha Casey, a vibrant school librarian who thrives on her passion for books and community. However, her world is turned upside down when Duncan Carpenter—the new principal from her past—walks into her life. Once a love interest who didn't see her, Duncan has transformed into a rule-driven enforcer, his protective instincts threatening to upend the very school Sam adores. The tension between the two is palpable, each grappling with their own history and the stark changes that have shaped them.

As chaos envelops the school, Center masterfully blends humor and heart, leading us through Sam and Duncan's journey of self-discovery and rekindled love. Together, they must confront their vulnerabilities and the courage it takes to truly be seen by one another. With her signature sparkling dialogue and relatable characters, "What You Wish For" explores themes of bravery, community, and the transformative power of love. It’s a captivating read that reminds us that sometimes the most unexpected challenges lead to the greatest rewards.

I said it in the title but I’ll say it again, this book has strong “and then everybody clapped” energy, and that was really hard to get past. The style of prose is what I would say contributes to this feeling the most, with the narrator/heroine often referencing the future at the end of each chapter. It came off as kind of... smug? Annoying? Read it and see what I mean. Also the fact that she thought she could heal someone of that awful trauma in literally a semester with therapy and roller coasters? Yikes. The whale scene was the biggest “and then everybody clapped” moment because... literally everybody clapped on more than one occasion during this scene. So, a lot of the book was cringey and unbelievable.
BUT I stayed up really late to finish this book in one sitting, so I definitely liked something about it. I think if you remove all the main character’s annoying internal monologues, she’s pretty interesting. The epilepsy and the after affects of that for her were pretty interesting and well thought out. I also liked Duncan a lot, but only really after the surgery scene. It would’ve been better if we got more glimpses of his past self from the very beginning. Like, just as a potential example of what I mean, if he’s mean now but he still has a dorky poster in his office that says “hang in there” or something that showed Sam the man she knew was still part of this new man. His only personality trait for A LARGE portion of the book was hating everything, which was hard to enjoy. But I thought post-op Duncan was compulsively readable.
Sam also never really confesses her feelings/former obsession in the book and that really made me annoyed, I really wanted that interaction on the page and not getting it frustrated me. It’s a small thing but it irked.
So, this book had something for sure, but it also has some big issues. Were those issues insurmountable for me? No. But if you don’t like suspending your disbelief for long periods of time I would just skip this one.

This is my first read of a book by Katherine Center, it will definitely not be my last. I loved her writing style and her character and plot development. The story grabbed my attention and I loved Sam and ultimately Duncan. The reader should be aware that the book does handle some triggering topics including school violence but I found it was handled in a respectful and thought provoking manner. I found this compelling read both emotional and memorable; two things I love in a good book.

I love Katherine’s books so much. I only read her first book this year, but her stories have a way to connect with us that doesn’t go away. Also, I learn so much about myself with her characters. It was so nice seeing Helen and Jake (from Happiness for Beginners) in this book and I love Duncan. Sam is awesome and the whole cast of characters in this is incredible - I read this in one sitting and it was awesome.
