Wheels Up: A Gay Forbidden Military Romance (Out of Uniform, 4) Mass Market Paperback – November 28, 2017

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,010 ratings

“Each book in this series keeps getting better and better. I stayed up way past my bedtime with this one!” —Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Their love is forbidden, but their hearts aren’t listening to rules and regulations…

Lieutenant Dustin Strauss is a reformed man. No longer a twentysomething hell-raiser, he’s his SEAL team’s new XO—and a man with a secret. Or seven. He’s kept his bisexual identity under wraps for years, along with his kinky side and a fondness for the military-themed semianonymous hookup website Joe4Joe. His latest chat buddy is more than a sexy online distraction—they’re taking their very not-safe-for-work relationship into real time.

Petty Officer Wes Lowe has a smart mouth, a take-charge attitude and an uncanny ability for making things go boom. The life of an enlisted man isn’t always enough to satisfy him, but one wild, no-questions-asked weekend with his online love comes close. When a transfer order comes in, Wes feels ready and centered. He’ll make a good impression on his new SEAL team and keep his growing feelings for Dustin on the down low.

But as they log more time online and some very real emotions surface, Dustin and Wes struggle to pretend they’re just a harmless fling. And when his commander introduces Dustin to his team’s newest member, they’re in for the shock of a lifetime…and a crushing disappointment: their difference in ranks means even a friendship without sexual contact could end their navy careers for good.

With their hearts on the line, Dustin and Wes may not survive their next mission, let alone find a way toward a future together.

Wes & Dustin
4 out of 5 stars
Wes & Dustin
This is book 4 in Annabeth Albert’s Out of Uniform series. While this couple’s relationship and story arc stands well on its own – the series as a whole is best enjoyed in order (and Dustin is introduced/featured quite a bit in book 2, At Attention). I loved the idea of these two guys hooking up semi-anonymously only to learn that they’re both SEALs when Wes is transferred to Dustin’s team. The struggle with feeling an amazing connection to someone pitted against the Navy’s no-fraternization rules provides a lot of tension and angst. While this level of kink doesn’t always work for me – I enjoyed it here. Not just from a steam factor, but also Dustin working through what ever hang ups he’s bringing into the relationship and Wes’s encouragement to move beyond social expectations. Consent and communication made this really sexy. I enjoyed the evolution of their relationship, the clandestine nature, and I was pleasantly surprised by the resolution Albert provided for them. Wes & Dustin are perfect for each other. I’m excited for Mark & Isaiah’s book, Squared Away. Narration: I enjoyed Greg Boudreaux’s performance. These books are almost exclusively male characters with a pretty hefty cast. Boudreaux gives them all unique sounds and personalities. Wes’s Southern accent was a delight. Great listen.

Wheels Up is an amazing read. Normally I don't enjoy books where the angst level is turned up to 11, but I liked this story very much. Dustin and Wes were such lovable characters that I was able to survive and even thrive through the emotional roller coaster of their relationship. That the crisis moment brought me to tears is unusual for me, but it felt inevitable with this book. The hardest part was not relieving my stress by peeking at the end, but I somehow managed to resist.

I really like how their relationship started out on-line. My one and only criticism is that their on-line dialog is not very differentiated from the text. I would have liked italics, quotes, or at least new paragraphs to separate what they were actually saying from the narrative. I'm pretty sure I figured it out, but it was distracting the font was slightly different but I would have preferred more obvious dialog. Formatting aside, I love how the story starts with "We should meet." (quotation marks are mine) As someone who knows quite a few people on-line only, I have some idea how stressful that idea would be. I don't have the same type of (ahem) intimate on-line relationships as Wes and Dustin do, but giving up the anonymity of the internet for the real world would still be stress inducing.

Their meeting was both sweet and sexually charged. It was the first time they actually saw each other and could touch, but they had already known each other and shared sexual encounters for six months. Their on line acquaintance created an instant intimacy that was believable. That meeting, as well as Wes' unanticipated transfer to Dustin's unit, sets off an emotional storm that neither man is able to escape. The reader is swept along with them, wanting them to be together but fearing their discovery by the Navy.

Besides the excellent portrayal of a fraught relationship, the author handles another area with skill as well. Dustin and Wes have a little bit of a kink going--Dustin likes to be bossed around in bed and Wes likes to run the show. The way this is portrayed does not come across as demeaning or bullying in any way. Dustin and Wes have some very hot and imaginative scenes but Wes is always respectful and cautious in how he handles Dustin. This is not a BDSM story, but there are definitely some Kindle--melting scenes. Wes has some unnamed misgivings throughout the story; when they are finally revealed the picture of his and Dustin's relationship is completed.

Finally, the plot line that keeps Dustin and Wes apart is believable. Often the angst--inducing problem romance characters face is very contrived or just silly. The reader is left thinking that if the relationship was stronger they would find a quicker, easier way to overcome their problems. While there are solutions to Dustin and Wes' problems they are not easy or consequence--free. Their problems are tough ones and they handle them pretty well.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good love story with very sexy men and lots of feels.

So, I read this for 2 reasons.

    1. It's been on my kindle for a hot minute.
    2. I recently read her book in the Vino and Veritas series through Sarina Bowen's Heart Eyes Press.

And, while I wasn't disappointed, I can see how her writing improved since this was written. I felt like this story dragged on in some parts. Sure, it was sexy and some emotional moments, but because this is a series of standalones and I hadn't read the previous books, some of the military acronyms and jargon weren't explained, making some parts a little hard to follow.

I did enjoy the character development and Wes and Dustin's inner circles of family and friends. They were mostly supportive in the end. Although I kept wondering why Wes had a hangup about being nak*d around Dustin and letting him touch him. It doesn't really get explained clearly

Something else that kind of irked me was how the author seemed allergic to using "I" pronouns in sentences. There was a lot of choppy dialogue where the guys didn't use "I". It made them sound very caveman, and not in a sexy, possessive way. More it made them sound a bit dumb.

Overall, I did enjoy the story and would still recommend it. 3.5/5 stars

Albert is a master at writing deep and emotional stories and characters that keep you hanging on until the very end. I didn’t want to put this book down for anything and I was completely invested in the story. Both Dustin and Wes are incredible characters and their relationship was the perfect mix of sexy and sweet. They try to stay away from each other but they’re both so compassionate and are always trying to help the other. Everything about this book was perfect and I couldn’t put it down.

This book had a lot of realism included in regards to the military regulations. It made it a lot harder for Wes and Dustin to be together but it also made their moments more poignant. They’re always sure it’s going to be their last time together and that adds a real depth to the interactions. The ending is a bit of a HFN but you know that things are getting better with each day.

I loved Dustin’s character and the dichotomy of his tough appearance and his desire to give up control in the bedroom. Dustin has been struggling with how to tell his family and friends about his bisexuality and I found this story line really interesting. At the same time, I liked that Dustin wasn’t afraid to explore his bisexuality though he had a few moments coming to accept his particular kinks. He’s devoted to his SEAL team and a strong leader and no matter what the military says he can’t stay away from Wes. Dustin was especially sweet when it came to lifting Wes’s spirits over his sister.

Wes was also an amazing character. He knows he’s found something special in Dustin but he also doesn’t want to put Dustin’s career in danger. Wes is always putting others before himself and it’s an incredibly endearing character trait. The scenes with his sister are incredibly sweet and I’d love to get Sam’s story one day *fingers crossed, pretty please*. Wes is also incredibly supportive of Dustin and his moments of boosting Dustin’s confidence were great. I would have liked a little more on Wes’s insomnia. Is it just worry over his sister’s heart condition? Stress from his work in the military? Or something else? I’m just crazy curious so I wanted to explore it further.

This might tie with Off Base as my favorite Annabeth Albert book because it was soooo good.

A really hot story for these two gorgeous guys.  When chemistry is so hot for a night with both hiding who they work for. "Don't tell" in military means more for Dustin and Wes when each is forbidden as fraternisation of colleagues is one of the rules. Hot scenes between them includes hot phone scenes, nipple play, older man being the bottom. Submitting to a younger top and more. The ending was nail biting as I was wondering if they'd get caught. I love this series and definitely gonna grab more of these great books.
When Dustin 32 yrs receives a text from Saucer-Man on Joe4Joe app to meet up. They'd been talking for months now and he was nervous to meet for the first time. Dustin was a 2 LT command Navy Seal..and was Bi-sexual but he had never had any experiences with men.
Wesley was an explosives expert being assigned to a new Seals team. Imagine there surprise meeting up after the months hot time together.

Oh my heart! Such an emotional story, by far the angstiest in the series so far.

This is a story of Dustin (Dylan's big brother from At Attention) and Wes, who hook up via the military app Joe4Joe. They spend a memorable night together but things get a whole lot complicated when the new guy in Dustin's team turns out to be Wes. The regulations concerning fraternization between a superior and a subordinate are strict and very thoroughly upheld so even a close friendship would be breaking the rules - let alone an affair. So our heroes are faced with a dilemma - either continue in secret and hope they don't get busted or let go of their chance of something more...

I mean, wow. This was something else indeed. This is such a good series and each instalment just improves and completes this world the author has created. Here we get to peek at Apollo and Dylan's married life and Maddox and Bryan as well as Pike and Ryan get a cameo too - it's just so wonderful to see the threads come together.

I am eagerly anticipating the next instalment!!!
