From an author who Stephen King calls “an absolute master” comes a “heart-clutching psychological thriller” (People) about a young female police officer facing danger on all fronts—from a clever victim of abuse, skeptical colleagues on the force, and even her own father.

Philomena McCarthy is an ambitious police officer with the elite Metropolitan Police in London, responding to a domestic violence call. Tempe Brown is a bloodied young woman and the mistress of a decorated and intimidating London detective, Darren Goodall. Philomena and Tempe strike up a tentative friendship, determined to protect each other from Goodall, but something isn’t quite right about the stories Tempe tells and the secrets she keeps. Yet the young officer is drawn into Tempe’s world, unsure of what is real or invented. After a bungled break-in and an unsolved murder, Philomena finds herself trapped—with her career, her impending wedding, and her very survival in doubt.

Robotham’s brilliant ability to render complex characters, both good and bad, keeps readers unsure of whom to trust, “maintain[ing] an air of excruciating suspense” (
The Washington Post)—until the very last page.

This is a police procedural and a microscopic look at domestic abuse at the same time. Philomena McCarthy is the daughter of a mob boss and could have had an easy life, but instead she has chosen to join the Metropolitan police force as a Constable. She is thorough and a straight shooter, but still runs afoul of the law when she dares to accuse a police hero of domestic abuse. Following her accusations are suspensions and all kinds of revenge from fellow officers. The route Phil takes is the high road, but it is a lonely one, and her story is engaging and intricate. Along the way, she meets abused Tempe as well as the police officer’s wife, Allison Goodall. Phil also gets accused or murder, faces her father’s serious illness and loses her fiancé due to all of the scandals. This book is a commentary of police corruption, prevalent although not seeming to be widespread. It is also a look at domestic violence and the effects it has on the abused spouse as well as the children. It is also the story of police officers who seem to be made of Teflon in that nothing, not even their own crimes, can touch them. The topics were varied and mesmerizing, but hard at times to read about. The characters were realistically portrayed in great detail, with a lot of emphasis on relationships between Philomena, the other police officers and her family members. I enjoyed the fast pace of the story and reading about the background of Phil’s family and how her father became wealthy. I was not a fan of the weak characters, those who seemed to sit on the fence instead of taking sides and standing for what was right. A mystery is woven around Tempe, so her character is interesting as well as cloaked in psychological issues that are slowly revealed. Fans of suspense thrillers will enjoy this book, but I must say it is different from others written by this author as it is more police procedural than mystery-driven. I own a copy of this book on my Kindle and was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Michael Robotham’s new standalone novel, WHEN YOU ARE MINE, is a solid effort with which I have a serious quibble (one that might not trouble other readers). First, the story: Philomena McCarthy is a WPC in the Met, working in south London. She crosses paths with a sleazebag DS named Darren Goodall—a wife-beating control freak who may have pushed a prior fiancée off the cliff at Beachy Head, and has also abused his mistress, a former schoolmate of Phil’s. The schoolmate, Maggie Brown, now calling herself Tempe Brown, seeks Phil’s friendship and is extreme in the methods she uses to secure it. Phil is about to get married to a firefighter, with whom she lives in Clapham. She does not need the problems with Goodall, who has been cited for valor in stopping a knife-wielding baddie in Camden Market. Goodall has friends at the Met and they have little use for an ambitious WPC who has the goods on their pal. They can, will and do set out to destroy her and her career.

Wrinkle: Phil’s dad is Eddie McCarthy, a top London gangster, who began by hijacking lorries and selling their cargo on the black market. He has now become a land developer. He and Phil have been estranged but he is still there for her and she knows that she can turn to him and his partners in crime, her three uncles, one of whom is named Finbar. You don’t want to walk into any crime fiction story and cross a man named Finbar. This is a clever setup but not an original one. Parker’s Sunny Randall (the character he created for Helen Hunt) has an ex-husband named Richie with strong mob connections; Richie is never more than a phone call away from Sunny.

So where are my issues/quibbles? First, this is a very character-driven story (something at which MR excels), but the characters dominate the plot, setting and themes. It will thus appeal to a wider variety of readers; I get that. The way it is constructed, however, leads one to expect a different unfolding of plot. Phil is an attractive character and she is dealt a terrible injustice by Goodall and his goonish mates. Whenever I encounter a novel marked by horrendous injustice I expect an equal-and-opposite reaction, a revenge story of the first order. Or call it a ‘justice restored’ story, if you wish, but one in which the deliverers of injustice receive their just due. Big time. SPOILER: that does not happen here, or at least not as expected. The ending returns to issues of character. We learn that things are not quite what they seem; we encounter some mini-reversals (not of the gobsmacking variety associated with Jeffery Deaver) and have an ending that is more somber, thoughtful, philosophic than a visit from the justicers with the long guns, thin lips and endless determination. In other words, the novel betrays expectations (or at least it betrayed my expectations). I am not saying that the plot was weak. It was a jackhammer plot; I couldn’t stop reading the last 50-70 pp. When it ended, however, I was dissatisfied.

Hence 4 stars (actually 4.5). MR is still one of my favorite writers and I anxiously await his next book.

I think I have now read every Robotham novel and he very rarely disappoints. The magic, I believe, stems from his ability to have the reader invested fully from the outset. Here we have a very likeable policewoman protagonist who remains central to the two main story threads: a possibly corrupt senior policeman engaged in domestic abuse and the emergence of a friend who sticks a little too closely to her. The plot develops smoothly and things are kept real for the most part, with some reasonable twists delivering added punch. This is a fantastic "read it in a day" novel.

Dysfunctional family dynamics, domestic violence, psychopathic obsessive and a heroine just trying to live a normal life all come together to create a textured, intense mystery/police drama. I like it even though the ending felt a little rushed and a tiny bit disappointing.

This is evidence that male authors shouldn't have a female protagonist. And it's especially disappointing because this author shines in the Cyrus Haven series. That's fast paced and engrossing, so much so that I think I read two of those books in a week. By contrast, this is muddy and the plot and characters are nonsensical. The female lead is so desperate for marriage that all it takes to forgive the man who embarrassingly jilted and abandoned her is for him to cook spaghetti sauce in a 'frilly apron.' She builds an entire life on hating her gangster father, then embraces him, then discards him again in the space of a few pages. No one's actions make sense and the characters are shallow and ill-formed to say the least. The book is a mess, amateurish, badly plotted, and overall just terrible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr spannend... mit kleiner Einschränkung (ohne Spoiler)
