This was a slow burner in my opinion. I was very slow going and more like a chick-lit than a great romance. Definitely an easy read which I am sure people are looking for at this crazy time.

A delightful wintry charmer from a much-loved author, The Winter We Met is an uplifting romantic tale from Samantha Tonge.

Going back home from a toy fair in Germany, Jess never imagined that a flight back to England would end up changing her life, but when handsome Australian Nik sat next to her, the two connected instantly and had quickly struck up a conversation that kept them amused and entertained for the duration of the flight. When they touched down in England, Nik and Jess realised that they were not ready to say goodbye just yet and as the charismatic Aussie had a few days to kill, Jess decided to invite him over to her typical English village and her lovely toy shop. With Nik’s life being – quite literally – on the other side of the world, Jess knows that even though she is drawn to him, a future for the two of them is out of the question – even if she cannot deny the fact that she simply cannot stop herself from constantly thinking about him…

Jess and Nik are looking forward to spending an enchanting couple of days in the run up to Christmas together, but reality soon intrudes on their magical time when Jess gets a distressing phone call: her beloved gran’s care home Willow Court is closing down before Christmas and Jess needs to find her a new place to live which is no mean feat as she has to find her the perfect place to call home. Willow Court might be closing, but Jess is not about to let the residents bid adieu without throwing the best Christmas party ever!

Jess is up to her eyeballs in baubles, glitter and mince pies, but at the back of her mind she is worried that she will not find her gran a home that is as perfect as Willow Court. With Nik’s time in England coming to a close, Jess’ heartache seems to no bounds, but will a Christmas miracle provide Jess with everything which her heart desires? Or is she about to have a Christmas full of regret, heartache and disappointment?

Samantha Tonge’s name has become synonymous with feel-good romantic comedies and she is at her best with The Winter We Met. A wonderful tale that sparkles with humour, charm and hope, The Winter We Met is a heart-warming and irresistible read about dreams coming true, falling in love and meeting your soul mate that I couldn’t put down.

Jess is a lovely heroine. She is kind-hearted, loyal and somebody readers will cheer for and Nik is a gorgeous Australian hero I fell in love with.

As superb as ever, Samantha Tonge’s The Winter We Met is another one of her books heading straight for my keeper shelf.

This is my second novel by Samantha Tonge and I’m really just wondering why I haven’t read more, more, more?!

I enjoyed One Summer in Rome a coupe years ago and reading The Winter We Met reminded me just how well this author captures emotions and makes the reader feel them too.

Let’s start with the beautiful setting. I love an author who can create a delightful sense of space without having to waffle on for pages about paint colour and furniture textures. Samantha’s descriptions merge with the plot creating just the right ambiance to have you energised while overlooking a small town at sunset or feeling cozy in a cute pub.

There’s also mystery. Just what is the story with Nik? There are cues, clues and misdirections. I thought I had him sussed out by about a third of the way in, then I began to doubt myself and then… well, let’s just say you have to read the book to find out and enjoy even more.

Jess is such a sweet central character. She’s not had the easiest life but she’s resilient and determined to be happy while making her own way in this world. That determination may sometimes cloud her judgment and blind her to something beautiful right there in front of her. However, how her eyes are opened and how she discovers the magic of romance is delightful.

Then there are the charming cast at Willow Court, her grandmother’s care home. I loved how the author provides very convincing characters here. The realities of elderly persons living with dementia, heart illnesses, loneliness etc is touched on. I really enjoyed the ‘care facts’ and tools that are covered. I especially enjoyed how those details work with the story and never interrupt flow or setting.

And Christmas: It’s a Christmas story with a protagonist who works in a toy store while helping the residents of a care home plan their Christmas bash. The Christmas details are certainly jolly from the food to traditions to the gorgeous window displays… absolutely delightful.

I adored this story. The setting is perfect, the characters perfectly flawed and the feelings wonderfully real!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Christmas Novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2020

Jess has her ideal job running a toy shop, her ideal flatmate in Oliver, and her gran living close by, life is good. When she finds herself sitting next to the handsome, charismatic Nik on a flight home from a Christmas trade fair it seems it might get even better.

Having discovered her new friend also works in the toy industry, Jess invites Nik to come and see the shop she is so proud of and maybe work on their friendship a little before he returns to Australia. Taking a phone call just as their shop tour is over Jess is horrified to hear her Gran's care home, Willow Court, is closing and everyone has to find another place to live before Christmas.

What follows is a whirlwind of organisation, not only to find Gran a new home but also arrange the final Christmas party for all the residents before they are forced apart. With Nik and Oliver on hand to help Jess begins to hope she can sort everything and keep everyone happy and if she has a little romance along the way well, she's certainly not going to discourage it!

This is a lovely, feel good, work of fiction which in a lot of ways slots into real life perfectly. Jess, Nik, Oliver and her work colleague, Seb, are so well drawn they step off the page as their stories unfold along with Buddy the dog.

What lifts this book to a five star read however, are the residents and staff of Willow Court. Ms Tongue has been spot on in describing the differing personalities needed here; those who rely on the goodness and kindness of others in their final years as well as the changes caused by illness or circumstance which goes hand in hand with the inevitability of growing older.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and recommend it unreservedly. If you only read one Christmas novel this year make sure this is it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A touch of magic

This novel feels Christmassy from the start with Jess flying home from a toy fair in Germany and meeting up with the enigmatic Nik, an Australian who seems anxious to keep in touch. On her return home, she discovers that the care home where her beloved grandmother lives is to be closed down at short notice. Determined to give the friendly residents a send-off to remember, she throws herself into organising a Christmas party, with the help of Nik and her friend and flatmate Oliver. Jess is attracted to Nik but Oliver is strangely antagonistic, feeling that perhaps Nik is a little too good to be true. For Nik has formed a unique bond instantly with the residents, seems to instinctively know the right thing to do or say, but seems indifferent to Jess beyond being friendly. And relations between Jess and Oliver are deteriorating, it seems beyond repair. Until Nik works his magic again. So maybe resident Alf was right with this particular conspiracy theory!

Wonderful Christmassy read, warm and funny... a cup of hot chocolate type of book. I loved all the Christmas details, the food, decorations, it all made me feel like putting up my Christmas tree. The setting of a toys shop took me back to visits to my local toy shop as a child.
However this is much more than simply feel good read, the characters are well drawn, and Nik in particular kept me guessing. I liked the story line about the care home, and the close bond between Jess and her grandmother. I really enjoyed this heartwarming and romantic read.

i enjoyed this book immensely and will be sure to read more from the author. however i did struggle with plot confusion during the lunch break Jess and Nik write the newspaper article. it describes her phone buzzing twice which she ignores, and then goes on to ring Gran Alice for a personal quote for the article. her phone buzzes again after, until Oliver and Seb burst into the pub to say they have been trying to contact her as Alice had fallen and was in an ambulance. the two prior phone buzzes before speaking to Alice being whole and well for the quote dont make sense.

I absolutely loved this book. I felt the plot line was excellent and written with much empathy. Jess, works in a toy shop and meets Nik on the flight back from Germany where they both had attended a toy fair. Jess, has a flatmate, Oliver and they are great friends. Jess’s grandmother is in a care home. They receive shocking news about it and they are determined to have their usual Christmas Party. This takes a lot of organising and Nik and others give a lot of time to help. I thought this was a wonderful and beautifully written book with a touch of magic in it too. I can highly recommend it.
