A Courtroom of Ashes Kindle Edition
There’s a ghost on the other side of my mirror. John, the incredibly charming and incredibly dead man, says my mirror is a window to Purgatory. Which would be fine, if Mr. Eyecandy were the only ghost around.
See, vicious spirits roam free in the land of the dead, and they’re after me. Of course. It’s only fitting after all the things I’ve done.
When an evil ghost drags my soul through the mirror and into the great beyond, I will need all the help I can get to return to my body. But Purgatory is a dangerous place for a lawyer with a pitch-black past.
Karma can be a real bitch. And today, it’s coming for me.

About the Author
Now a grown-up (though many will beg to differ), C. S. Wilde writes about fantastic worlds, love stories larger than life and epic battles. She also, quite obviously, sucks at writing an author bio. She finds it awkward that she must write this in the third person and hopes you won't notice.

About the author

C.S. Wilde wrote her first Fantasy novel when she was eight. That book was absolutely terrible, but her mother told her it was awesome, so she kept writing.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt’s true confession time: This is the first romantic fantasy I’ve ever read.
Second confession: I thoroughly enjoyed A Courtroom of Ashes. What made this book work for me was C. S. Wilde’s breezy, down-to-earth style and vivid storytelling. You can’t help but like the smart and cheeky Santana Jones, who becomes all business at the office, but finds herself falling for the ghost she can contact through an antique mirror she just bought.
Problem is, the hunky ghost has friends -- and enemies. Red Seth is one of the most delightfully wicked bad guys I’ve ever had the pleasure to read about. I don’t believe in the supernatural, but after reading this book, I’ve done double-takes at dusty old mirrors.
Fast-paced, funny, and a little bit sad, A Courtroom of Ashes is a great summer read.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2016Format: KindleC.S. Wilde starts off the story with Santana Jones admiring her latest purchase, a full-wall mirror for her bedroom. That's where the protagonist meets John Braver, the hot politician who is as good-looking as he is dead, and appears to reside on the other side.
Santana Jones is not your average 25-year-old. She's a kick ass lawyer flying up the career ladder at the New York City firm where she works--and she talks to dead people. Santana realizes that the decisions she made on the side of the living also have real and resounding consequences on the dead. She not only has to slay some bad ass ghosts and demons, but she also has to face some of the choices she made. This makes A Courtroom of Ashes a compelling read.
As a reader who enjoys a bit of a love story, I found Santana's love interest, John Braver, to be a bit disappointing. It was hard for me to believe a spunky and smart lawyer like Santana would have fallen for him. He lacked some dimension. As such, I secretly hoped the scenes including him wouldn't last long--which they didn't most of the time.
As one would expect in a fantasy, there's a quest, some trials, and a whole world of characters--on both sides of the mirror! An extra round of applause for Irving, Mama Na Se and Red Seth! Those characters were interesting, entertaining and added life to the page. Together with Santana, they definitely helped advance the story and keep the pages turning.
A Courtroom of Ashes delivers all of these in spades. Without including any spoilers, I thought it worth noting that Wilde wrote a very satisfying ending to the novel. The book has an epilogue that really rounds out the end in a plausible manner. All the loose ends are tied up.
I would recommend this book to lovers of dark fantasy, and I would definitely consider reading another book by this author.

For being my first read on ghosts and the afterlife, this book did a really good job at introducing me to one way we can look at Death. The characters were memorable (just the name Santana Jones is great), the relationships felt real, and we get a complete story in one book, however, there were a few things I just couldn’t ignore, two of them being the fast pace pace and convenience of events in the second half of the book. The only character I couldn't get behind was (surprisingly) our male protagonist as he felt one dimensional and unapproachable. As a side note, I would SO read a book centered around Irving, haha (he was my favorite of this book)
I'd recommend this book to people who like fantasy books, lots of romance, and a fun/casual tone with a relatable and strong female lead who can be loosely described as an antihero. Final Rating is between 3 and 3.5. Full Review at my blog [dailywritingjunk]
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2018Format: KindleI have read everything from C.S. Wilde, but this one, (this sadly only One stand-alone book) was breathtaking pure and simple. She catches your imagination from the first page starting at the Law Firm, and Court, and well-used Flash-Backs, to the Mirror, to Her Best Friends Death, to the Roller Coaster ride that starts from there and doesn't end until you close the book. I won't cover all the details because everyone has done it so well already, but this was one of the best books by C.S. and one of the best of the year...Bar None. My only regret is that this may be the last time we hear from Santana....Or is it?
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2016Format: PaperbackC.S. Wilde has a truly engaging style of prose that hooked me right away, as well as an interesting storyline that peels back the darker layers of morality one by one, told from the perspective of a hotshot lawyer named Santana Jones. Santana is one of the most interesting characters I've read in recent memory: complex, strong, capable of both good and terrible things. She's a very real human being, and she acts as our anchor for the strange events that occur when she's pulled through the looking glass.
Five well deserved stars for this intriguing thriller that takes the reader through the depths of Purgatory, shows a different kind of love, and asks us if there's any coming back from our past actions. I look forward to reading more of C.S. Wilde's work!
