Confessions of an Actuarial Tutor: Anecdotes, Jokes and General Geekiness Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

“The man is quite possibly certifiable insane but is undeniably a brilliant tutor”

John has been training the mythical mathematical creatures known as actuaries for nearly 20 years.
Join John as he tries to help recalcitrant student actuaries pass their professional exams armed with nothing but a copy of the actuarial tables and a sense of humour.
Experience his Basil Fawlty-like antics as he strives to maximise the likelihood of socially awkward actuaries being able to survive in the “normal” world.
We’re 95% confident that this will be the perfect gift for actuaries and other math geeks everywhere.*

* Please note that our statistical model of enjoyment makes the (rather heroic) assumption that they have a sense of humour in the first place.

John was born at a very young age with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. At first, it appeared that no lasting damage had been done, but as he grew, it became clear that his sense of humour had been damaged irreparably.

John studied mathematics at Oxford University where he also trained as a teacher. Despite this, he still refers to himself in the third person. Whilst there, he performed stand-up comedy as part of the Oxford Revue. Making audiences laugh was too easy, so he progressed to greater challenges: making maths interesting and making boring actuaries laugh.

When he’s not wrestling with his work-life balance or literally wrestling with his four children, he’s wrestling with writing funny words on a page in his cramped study.

John lives with his family near Oxford, England where he wonders how his wife still finds the same jokes funny after more than 20 years of marriage.

Astonishing Read. This was so realistic I could imagine my Stat students in the tutorials. Except for the Brit part - studies show that Brits can commit more humor in less words than Americans. Well worth the read! Funny!

Admittedly, there do not exist many humorous actuarial texts, unless you count Models for Quantifying Risk 3rd Edition am I right? The 4th Edition was so much better. Anyway, John's Confessions of an Actuarial Tutor perfectly nails what it is like to live inside the actuarial world. I had so much fun reading this book and it put me in such a creative and joyous mood.

Highly recommended for any summer reading list, post-exam self-therapy session, or gift to one of your fellow associates (not to be confused with Fellow associates or fellow Associates) who need a pick-me-up right before bid season.

You might wonder what an actuarial tutor might have to confess. Nothing much, apparently.

I have taught masters students in actuarial science at university too but I could never have narrated my experiences in such an interesting and amusing manner!

As someone who finished the Actuarial exams a few years ago, I’m glad to see John remains the same character. Turning up to a tutorial with a case of imposter syndrome, John got me through the first exam. And now reading this book has reminded me of what a great teacher, and guy, he is. Read it if you want an insight into the mind of a great teacher, or to see what tutorials for the Actuarial exams are like.

Excellent book for any actuarial student. A lot of the scenarios in this book are very relatable, I am sure other students and probably other tutors would all agree! John taught me, lovely bloke and puts his students first! Never met anyone like him before, a true educator with a passion!
