THE COMPLETE LEGEND OF TAL SERIES

Legend of Tal is an epic fantasy adventure in the vein of classic stories like The Lord of the Rings and The Dragonlance Chronicles, but with updated sensibilities like in the Witcher series.

It follows the titular character Tal Harrenfel and his apprentice, Garin Dunford, as they take on an immortal sorcerer and attempt to free the world of tyranny.

However, not all tales should be believed. Nevertheless, Tal must live up to his legend, and Garin discover his own power, if they’re to overcome the forces pitted against them.

* * * * *

J.D.L. Rosell was swept away on a journey when he stepped foot outside his door and into The Hobbit. He hasn't stopped wandering since.

In his writing, he tries to recapture the wonder, adventure, and poignancy that captivated him as a child. His explorations have taken him to worlds set in over a dozen novels and five series, which include Ranger of the Titan Wilds, Legend of Tal, The Runewar Saga, and The Famine Cycle.

When he's not off on a quest, Rosell enjoys his newfound hobby of archery and older pastimes of hiking and landscape photography. But every hobbit returns home, and if you step softly and mind the potatoes, you may glimpse him curled up with his wife and two cats, Zelda and Abenthy, reading a good book or replaying his favorite video games.

A must-read for fans of classic and modern fantasy alike

A must-read for fans of classic and modern fantasy alike
'"I’ve never claimed to be more than a man.”' A King’s Bargain by J.D.L. Rosell is a captivating and inspiring epic coming-of-age, feel-good fantasy tale of legends and forging one’s own path. Within its pages, readers are immersed in a story illustrating the fragile balance of good and evil, an everlasting battle for sovereignty, and the importance of choice. Beautifully conveyed and steeped in myth and magic, the promise of adventure and discovery sinks its claws in, refusing to let go even after the final page is turned. Brilliant characterization, a gripping mystery, and a setting with a deeply rooted history, this is a must-read for all fans of classic and modern fantasy alike. Rosell crafts a wonderfully developed cast of likable characters, each playing a critical role in the advancement of the story presented. Tal Harrenfel, a living legend bearing the weight of ballads sung behind bright smiles. Garin, apprentice with a burning need to seek the secrets of the world. Wren, a determined girl with her sights set on creating a name for herself. Falcon, a bard with a proclivity for bending the truth. Aelyn, a rancorous mage who’s incapable of refusing aid for those in need. Although so very different and distinct, the dynamics between these characters–frenemies, budding love, tried and true friendship, found family–are nothing short of wonderful. '“I’ll earn my own name,” he whispered to the night sky, hidden beyond the thatched roof. “I’ll earn my stars.”' As we flip through the pages, we’re submerged in a riveting world rich with history and legends of epic proportions. The adventure we’re swept along takes us from the quaint farming village of Hunt’s Hollow to the fog-laden, haunted ruins of Erlodan’s Castle to the sprawling city of Halenhol, dominated by the sky-soaring Coral Castle. An over-arching mystery delivers us to each of these unique locations, which house their own veiled mysteries waiting to be unearthed. Rosell injects just enough details to set the stage, allowing imagination to run rampant. And while this story involves a great deal of travel, he smartly emits most of the “let’s stop to make camp” bits, benefitting the fluidity of the narrative. The writing itself is absolutely superb. Told with flowing, polished prose, the engaging plot is portrayed with near perfect pacing. Informational morsels are intelligently revealed to readers as the characters experience specific situations–there’s very little fluff in this concise epic. Rosell employs the use of spoken tales within the tale to educate on the histories of the world, as well as shed some light on the dangers that lurk beyond the horizon. While I appreciated these enriching my reading experience and building some delicious tension, at times I felt they slightly pulled me from the present. There’s also a shallow learning curve (which I always appreciate) allowing the audience to easily and comfortably settle into the story being weaved. '“You’ve a fire in you, Garin. You need to feed it with all the World has to offer. If not, if you stay here without venturing away…” She shrugged. “I’d be afraid of that fire burning you up inside.”' A King’s Bargain is an engrossing foundation of Rosell’s Legend of Tal series, illustrated by dangerous secrets entangled throughout. While this story ties up nicely, the beginnings of another grand adventure are sowed, which left me in dire need for more. The blurb’s description of “The Name of the Wind meets Witcher” aptly describes what lies within these pages, and it makes for one excellent read that’s almost impossible to put down. If you’re on the hunt for a sweeping epic, yet intimate tale with excellently drawn characters, then look no further – A King’s Bargain is exactly what you’re looking for. I thoroughly recommend.

Fantasy is my favorite genre.  The last five or six books I've read have been sci-fi, and I was looking for something to quench my fantasy thirst.  I stumbled into The Legend of Tal and have been incredibly impressed.

The author, Rosell, slowly builds an amazing world that feels rich with history.  He also introduces a fresh magic system that is deep and well presented. Likewise, the characters are well written, with varied motivations and character arcs.  While the characters are learning and growing, they are trying to unravel the mystery of who or what is behind the sabotage occurring in the capital.  Rosell does a great job of balancing the development of the younger characters with the world-worn personality of the titular character.

This novel has it all: great fight scenes, vividly described grotesque monsters, mystery, sorcery and arcane artifacts...if you want it in a fantasy novel, it is here and very well done.

I tore through this book and immediately picked up the next one.  Rosell has had me in his grip this entire time and I can't wait to see what comes next.  If you are looking for a great fantasy novel, I highly recommend you give the Legend of Tal a try.

Renown is a fickle thing, mostly because glamor is. As soon as one gets to know the real person better, the adoration tends to slip away. Yet, the reasons for the legend, are there and will always remain.
As is the case with Tal. A man. More than a man, according to legend. . and yet so ordinary in other ways.
As Garin found out when he left his family in Hunt's Hollow to accompany Tal on an adventure that will even change his own outlook on life. And finding himself in danger time and again.
Author J D L Roswell certainly took pains to reveal the character of and extraordinary events that either makes a person a hero or a coward. A King's Bargain is a surprise a minute kind of fantasy with a lot of insight shown of any person's psyche when placed in a dangerous position. Yet the thrill as well as thrall is quite an attention grabber right up to the last page.
    Enjoy.

As with all of Rosell’s books that I have read, this was another great read. It did start off a little slow but didn’t take long to pick up the pace. With mystery and magic, this fantasy adventure is a fun read. There are two main characters Tal and Garin. Tal is a hero assassin that doesn’t feel he should be. Garin becomes his apprentice who is full of self-doubt. Rosell does a great job at keeping you from figuring out the relationship between these two. There is a twist at the end of the book I did not see coming. They set out with Aelyn an elven mage to hunt down an evil known as the Extinguished. The story keeps you pulled in page after page. Definitely looking forward to reading the next book. Can’t wait to see what lays ahead for their caravan as they continue their trek to Gladelyl to free Garin from being Night-touched.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good fantasy read with adventure, magic, mystery, and a good story.

If like to give this five stars based on the characters and story but the book's structuring left some confusion or the story jump to the next event without explanation, or came back after you read later on causing the confusion. But the characters are interesting and the plot made me push on. The fight scenes were well written and thought out. The characters are likeable and fit their role nicely. Overall I'd recommend and will continue reading book two because of the characters and plots to the story.

I can say I read it all. The first third of the book was good, it draws me in, then all the creatures started to jumble together, than poor falcon. The author tried to cram to many new words and unless you read a book and take notes like you were in school. I think you get my drift. A reader such as myself wants a story to flow. I do not want to, have to memorize thirty or more new words to keep up with a story line. Who wants to have to go back to find out what a word means.

I'm very excited about finding author JDL Rosell. Having purchased "A Kings Bargain, Legend of Tal " I can now look forward to a whole new series of fantasy. the book was well written, excellent fantasy world and believable characters . I particularly liked how realistic and multi dimensional each character is. They have strengths and weaknesses, not simple black and white cut outs. I am left wondering what Garin, Falcon and Tal will do next, and if the darkness which coexists within will be overcome. I appreciate the strong female lead, Wren, and hopeshehas an even larger role in the next book. Highly recommended

The way he brings out hthe complexity of his characters through out the book, always leaving some mysteries about them to be revealed or discovered keeps me engaged in the story. Damn that was fantastically good, a great read that will have fantasy fans craving and wanting more of The Legend that is Tal Harrenfel the butcher of mages. A very well thought out story that is fast paced and a very creative world for us to get lost in for awhile. Bran the chicken farmer is living in an isolated village and the young lad Garin who visits him regularly has become like a sort of son to him. When a visitor surprises them both, turning out to be an Elven wizard and Ambassador sent to fetch Bran to the King. This can only be bad news, Garin has known Bran for only five years and has a feeling there is more to Bran than just being a chicken farmer and would love to know what's his secret. When asked would he like to come along, he jumps at the chance to leave his village to see new places and some adventures. As the story continues we find out more about each character, and Bran turns out to be a legendary hero. Plenty of intrigue, some violence with some interesting characters and a few surprises along the way. Definitely worth a read, the narration by Derek Perkins is excellent. Now for book 2, highly recommend..😁🖤💥

Although this is quite well written it doesn't offer much new in this genre. In addition the wide eyed, innocent village boy coming of age stuff just irritated me. Predictably as soon as he's told not to tell something you know that when boy meets girl and she wants to know his secret then he's definitely going to be telling her and so it turned out. And you know the old "this is really dangerous so stick close" jape, well guess what, he doesn't and it really was dangerous. Fortunately there are enough more interesting characters to make this worth reading and so I'll try the next book.
