Torrent: An Enemies To Lovers Captive Romance (Condemned Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 4,455 ratings

I was fifteen when I sent the love of my life to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Back then Rafe was my brother's best friend and off-limits, but that didn't stop me from drooling over him. I've never forgotten the guy whose green eyes made me weak in the knees. Rafe hasn't forgotten me either. Eight years later, I find him on my doorstep with revenge on the mind.

The twisted part of this story? I still want him, even though he's taken me to a private island with no chance for escape. He says I've got eight years of misery to atone for, and every move he makes is designed to shame and punish.

But I'm wired for his methods, and instead of delivering retribution, his brutal touch lights us both on fire.

NOTE TO READERS: Torrent is a dark romance with kidnapping and other disturbing themes. Intended for mature readers. Not for the faint of heart. You’ve been warned. Part 1 in the Condemned series.

    Torrent by Gemma James

    Rafe & Alex

Ok... Ok... Calm down... Deep breaths... in... out... in... out... This book took my breath away... it sucked the oxygen right out of my lungs and replaced it with cement! It carved my heart out with a spoon and hand fed it back to me! It's dreadfully dark and ever so cruel and it chewed me up and spit me out! Thank God you recommended this one Pam Godwin! I'm gonna kick your butt... I mean kiss you next time I see you! Seriously, this book is fantastic in it's own dark and chilling sort of way. Gemma puts a disclaimer on this one and heed her warning... if you're squeamish or can't tolerate explicit sexual situations and violence... maybe this is not for you... but if your looking for the wildest ride of your life... look no further... This. Is. It.

This is a cliffhanger so beware and have Rampant ready to go or you'll freak way out like I did... Called Pam all kinds of names that day!!

"TORRENT is a new adult dark romance with disturbing themes and explicit content, including sexual scenes and violence that may offend some. Intended for mature audiences. Part one of the CONDEMNED series. This is not a stand-alone read. Approximately 43,000 words."

Ok so... let's start with Alex... holy heck is this chick beyond messed up. She's quite literally either the most ignorant heroine I've come across or she's a mastermind, I'll let you be the judge of that. She goes from one hell to the next and almost by choice if you ask me! I know she's guilt ridden and needs to purge herself of her sins, but she seemed way to laid back for me. Damn, you kidnap me, rape me, beat me... I'm gonna hate your butt and dream of ways to kill you slowly. Not Alex De Luca.... she went back for more. She craved more. She required more to feed her insatiable appetite for destruction! When her walls begin to crumble and her insides feel like they may implode she does the unthinkable, she falls in love, but don't let that mislead you... this is not your typical brand of love. It's so much more! She has burrowed inside my heart and that is where she'll stay until I feel the need to purge her from my system!

Now, Rafe... Oh My God Rafe! I loved him from hello! He's irate, he's attractive, he's built like a brick house, and he's one of the hottest pieces of tail I've read in a long long time. AND he's got tattoos... and lots of them. I know I'm shallow, but hell a girls gotta have dreams! Ok... now Rafe! He's out of prison and on the warpath. He's out for blood or more importantly vahjayjay and he isn't taking no for an answer. I love how controlling he is and how he gives what he thinks he got and all this time he's been thriving on a lie. A lie has been fueling his rage, his need to bestow hurt upon the one who bestowed it upon him. He is also a permanent fixture in my heart and will linger in there while I still draw breath!

Great supporting character cast. That cellmate, Jax... wow... I love his candor and his demeanor. He seems to be so laid back yet on high alert at all times. It would be nice to see him get a little book of his own. (*wink wink) Now that miserable, jerkface step brother Zach. That piece of crap can rot in hell for all I care. That guy is evil with a capitol E. However, his evilness is what makes this tale that much richer. What would a messed up, filthy, terrifying story be without an excellent villain. Zach is it!

To wrap this up, it's provocative, it's terrorizing, and it's brilliant. It was so gripping that I could not put it down for the life of me! The characters were so powerful and the storyline so profound and tragic. The dialogue flows with simplicity and feels exceedingly natural. The pacing is perfect, fast in fact, which I appreciate as I couldn't get submerged into this one fast enough. It's a very dark read and not for the faint of heart. Beware! I loved it and will be telling you all about it's continuation, Rampant very soon.

5 Stars cause 10 is not an option!

"Whoa. Holy mother of pearl. Super fudging nuggets. WAIT WHAT?! Holy shucks.WHY DOES THE WORLD HATE ME?!" along with a lot of explicit language pretty much cover all of my reactions while reading Torrent.

Momo from Books Over Boys recommended me Torrent a while ago and I finally had the chance to buy and read it. I'm pretty sure I was bothering Momo with all of my messages while I was reading, but holy heck I needed an outlet of some sort.

I'll say that right of the bat, if you couldn't tell form the synopsis, Torrent is a dark romance. That's not to say that there isn't some lightness to it, but there's very little. Being a reader that has delved into dark romances before, but it's been a while since reading one, it felt a lot like coming home, I totally forgot how much I loved the genre. Momo warned me, saying that this book wasn't for the faint of heart, or that I might need to take a break while reading. But I went through this book like a freight train, I don't know what that should say about me. All I can say it that after the amazing prologue, nothing was stopping me from reading and finishing this beauty.

Torrent was pretty darn amazing, though I think I was expecting a little bit more "dark". There was a lot of potential for it to be a pitched black kind of dark, but I'm hoping that that was Gemma James's way to hook the reader and she's killing us in the second book.

The only disturbing scenes are of Rafe's thoughts. But they're not the kind of disturbing that is vivid, it's a lot more like vague hints of how far he can go or is willing to go. You're probably going to think me weird, but I actually really loved Rafe. Though his means of getting his way are not conventional, he's persistent and determined which is pretty admirable if you ask me. Rafe is the kind of character that has a dark side but hides it. There are some really powerful paragraphs in the book that reveals so much of Rafe's character if you're paying attention. He's the perfect example for when someone says, "There's something off about him." Younger, he was a good kid in a sense that he behaved, but he hid his true self very well. Sometimes all a person needs is something drastic to happen to bring that real person out and that was what happened to Rafe.

Towards the end my heart was going into attacks. Something legitimately crazy happens and I don't know how I feel about it. To avoid spoilers, I'll keep my thoughts vague and I'll say this: I'm happy for him, really truly happy for him, because now he's at the point where he's at peace, but that's not who he is anymore. And I don't know if I want to him to suffer again (or more) to have him back.

Guys, Torrent is amazeballs. The characters and the situations are complexed and there's really no way understanding them completely, but it's the journey from beginning to end that is a freaking roller coaster. I stayed up really late reading this beauty and I'm half dead writing this but I don't regret it.

Overall, the storyline and plot was OK. Captive Romances tend to read the same but the plot was only slightly unique. I questioned the definition of ‘Enemies to lovers’ in this book. Were they truly enemies? No. Was the MMC justifiably upset and wanted revenge? Yes.

This isn’t a true ‘Enemies to Lovers’ book. There’s no mutual hate. Just misunderstanding and lack of communication for the first 17-18 chapters

The characters were well written, aside from the fact they were both melodramatic. I ended up liking them for their shared past, individual life battles, and how they were going to go into the future.

The ending was meh. Ended on a cliffhanger so you would rush to the book 2. However, book 1 is so short that it could have just been a part 2. But I understand how authors like to sell more individual books and call it a series.

The book was written well with no notable grammar issues. It lost 2 stars for the false ‘Enemies to Lovers’ trope, melodramatic plot line, and unnecessary cliffhanger.

I crushed this book in a few sittings and it's filthy! It was messed up but it turned me on so (shrug) if that's what you're into then dive in. I liked the characters well enough for a book like this, they weren't super developed but I felt both of their agony pretty deeply. The only thing that annoyed me was the mystery of why she'd falsely accused him was stretched out for soooo long it just started to drive me crazy. I get why she didn't want to tell him but it felt like every single chapter we were moments from finding out and then we didn't and I found it a bit exhausting. Also, it's irritating in an "enemies to lovers" story when they're only enemies because of a lack of communication and one five-minute conversation could clear it up.
But overall I still really enjoyed it, and I loved the acknowledgment that her kinks shouldn't be a source of shame if she's practicing them with the right person, I think that's an important message.
