Angelborn (The Eternal Flame Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Maia sees dead people. Since she can't distinguish them from the living, she ignores everyone in order to appear sane. But the ghost haunting her roommate breaks through her hardened shell. Not only does he claim to not be dead, he makes her feel things she never has before—dangerous feelings for a man who can never be hers.
For an angelborn like Caleb, dying without a soul sentenced him to eternity in the Wasteland. Now he's escaped, but the only way to stay free is by convincing his true love to share her soul with him. You only get one soulmate and his is not the broken, scarred young woman he can't stay away from. With dangerous angels hunting him, Maia is a distraction he can't afford.
After inadvertently leading a threat to Caleb's door, Maia is willing to risk anything to keep him safe. Even if that means losing him forever.
*** A standalone, new adult paranormal romance. 40,000 words. Recommended for readers 17+ due to sexual content.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a beautifully written novella! What happens when a halfling angel falls in love with a human but is unable to bind with her soul? In Caleb's case, it lands him in the Wasteland, a dark place where those with no soul wait for the rare chance to get a new soul. But Caleb escapes and goes in search of the soul of the woman he loves--a soul that's been reincarnated in the body of Genna, a college student whose modern sensibilities confuse Caleb.
And then there is Maia, Genna's roommate, who is haunted--literally. She sees ghosts and is haunted by one whose anger sometimes physically manifests itself in violent ways. When Caleb and Maia meet, an undeniable connection is formed that leaves them both questioning what they want and why they want it. It makes them question the very nature of love. Maia and Caleb's story was captivating from page one. One of my favourite aspects about Angelborn is how L. Penelope writes about angels *without* adding biblical overtones. Her portrayal of angels is more reminiscent of deities from mythology, which allows a secular person like me to be able to enjoy a story without getting a lesson from the Bible.
With finely etched characters and a compelling plot, Angelborn will leave you wanting to know more of Caleb and Maia's story. This was my first time reading L. Penelope and I am sure it won't be the last time.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt took me a while to get into this book, I thought it was too much of a romance.
But I stuck in there and was treated to two main characters who proved they could eventually do right for each other. Maia, a young woman who lived a life of fear and loneliness, haunted by her ability to see the dead and to be injured by them and Caleb a half angel who needed his earthly soulmate to bind with him in order for him to live a life with a soul. His original attempt was thwarted in the London blitz when the two lovers were killed before he could bind her soul to him. He ended up in a dreary place called the Wasteland.
Caleb escapes and finds his reincarnated love sharing college dorm room. With time running short for him he works on getting who he believes to be his soulmate to complete the binding. Maia who can see what he really is try’s to help in while fighting her growing desire and need for him.
What happens is spellbinding with a touch of a Shakespearean comedy of errors.
Read the book and you’ll see what I mean, it will be worth your time.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow! Angelborn was a breath of fresh air. Since the passing of L.A. Banks, I've been hard pressed to find speculative fiction by AA authors that captured my attention the way Mama Banks once did. Besides the greats, like Octavia Butler, I was trying to find new authors and happened to stumble across the name L. Penelope. She had two books on Amazon. After reading each synopsis, I decided on Angelborn and boy am I glad I did. So let's get into it.
In the beginning, we meet Caleb who is trying to escape to safety with the love of his life, Viv. We immediately find out that Caleb is more than human. Needless to say, trying to save himself and Viv didn't go as planned and he ends up in the Wasteland. Caleb starts his day out like he does every day, being that he has been cast into something akin to a world between worlds where lost human souls go to roam and Angelborn like him, those who couldn't get their human soul mate to bind to their souls.
Next we meet Maia, whom I take an immediate liking to. Maia has a special ability. She sees dead people. When we meet Maia, she's talking to Ms. Sadie. Ms. Sadie turns out to be a ghost, one of the good ones and trust me, Maia meets quite a few bad ones along the way.
Maia and Caleb meet via happenstance. Caleb's first love Viv, has been reborn as Maia's roommate. From there let the sparks fly! I absolutely loved how L. Penelope developed this story. Even though it was a novella, I felt it was a full novel. That's just how well L. Penelope developed her characters. I found it admirable that Maia tried to deny her attraction to Caleb out of respect for Genna, her roommate.
But I have to mention Helix. I don't know why I loved when he came in a shook up crazy. LOL! Helix is a bad boy personified, but I'd be on his team for sure! However, I loved the way Caleb basically came through like nah, son, Maia's mine so back off. LOL. Well he didn't really say that, but you know.
In the end, I appreciated a speculative fiction novel that had two AA leads. I've been pulling my hair out trying to find a good one and L. Penelope delivered. Her novella wasn't chocked full of fifty-leven characters which I loved. I give Angelborn 5 pages (think 5-stars). Nikki-Michelle recommends this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA really interesting take on the world of Angels, filled with ideas and concepts that I'd never really thought of before all wrapped around a beautiful romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book had a lot of details. I found myself skipping over parts and getting boa rd with all the confusion and details regarding g angels and the eternal life and the wasteland. Maia was an emotional rollercoaster of a character. This girl had been through way to much to still have goodness inside her. Any other person would have tossed in the towel on humanity a long time ago. Caleb’s character did not have enough time to develop in my opinion. We did not get to know him like we should have. This was my first read by the author and I think I would like to read book 2. I want to see how the story develops. Overall I give this story 2.75 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I am blown away by the fabulousness of this book. I adored both Caleb and Maia, and this was one of those books where I was sad to see it end. I can’t wait to read more books by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intense read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMaia is an African American young lady with complex issues (don't wish to give away too much of the plot). I really loved her personality and at times was heart broken for her. The daily challenges she faced and later having to watch someone you care about obsess of another was sad. Caleb and Maia were sweet together, would have loved you see more interaction between them and less of his past.
In any case, it was an interesting read and I was able to lose myself in the world of Wastelands and Angleborns. Great stuff!
I will definitely read the next instalment.
