- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022I simply loved 'A Touch of Fever'. Mr. Noor is an expert with the commercial prose style of writing - but he also provides the romance, adventure soaring landscapes and depth of the eloquent literature style. There's so much to love about this book: the two main characters and their growth, back stories and accompanying humor, antics, adventure associated with them is incredibly portrayed. The dialog is crisp, brilliant and constantly entertaining and enjoyable. The adventures are palpable, and the winsome feel of their friends, location, and outlooks will melt your heart. Noor has an amazing feel for the world of urban fantasy. The story is non-stop - you'll be finished.....and smiling to yourself in no time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2021This would be my first time reading Nazri Noor. I pretty much liked the blurb that was provided so I decided to give this book a shot.
A Touch of Fever is the first in the Arcane Hearts series. Jackson Pryde is the last of the artificers. He has been orphaned early on and is living in the Black Market - a magical, travelling dimension. Both of his parents were very gifted artificers - people with minimal arcane/magical gift that creates tools/machines that can enhance magical abilities and grant its users additional powers. However, upon their death the once thriving trade slowly died leaving Jackson the only person who can continue their legacy. Xander Wright is the mouthy, talented and a bit snotty neighbor who was also Jackson's childhood friend once upon a time. However, due to Xander exhibiting strong gifts in magic, he went to attend an elite school and lost touch with his friend resulting in a very strained relationship down the line. However, a mission that required the two to work together brought them closer, rekindled that friendship and made them discover their attraction for each other.
I loved a lot of things in this book - the worldbuilding is interesting with its mix of a magical, travelling marketplace, the guilds that organize people with various complex arcane skills, the various mythical creatures that inhabit the place including one snarky griffon who loves his chicken. It has its own social hierarchy with those having the gift of magic mostly near the top of the food-chain. It has its own shady side which we had a glimpse of when our main protagonists had a dealing with the law-enforcement. The implied over-arching arc of Jackson awakening or discovering his gift especially after Hecate has mentioned it later on in the story is intriguing.
The characters are fun and likeable though admittedly they do suffer from a lack of character development. The story does give Xander and Jackson some growth individually as they meet the challenges and obstacles in their way, but at times they merely feel like narrators of their own story, observers at times due to long internal monologues and inner musings. The chemistry between the two is there but their romance felt almost like insta-love with how fast their relationship jumped from being frenemies to lovers in a short span of time.
The story gives that new adult fiction vibe with the tone of its writing and how the protagonists were portrayed with both of them teetering from being mature at one moment then being a bit childish and immature the next minute. Overall though, A Touch of Fever is good start to this new series. It has some fun, engaging characters and an interesting world and magical system to explore. I'd give this 4 stars out of 5.
I received an ARC of this book via GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.

What can I say? This book had me immediately hooked. I was laughing literally within SECONDS of opening the book! Jackson is a lot of fun and I loved having the story from his perspective. There was everything I loved here- amazing world building, snarky best friends, talking beast, adventure and mystery... I finished this book in one day and am thrilled to have an entire series to follow. My only *light* irritation with this book is how quickly the conflicts between Jackson and Xander were resolved. Or, glossed over in reality. I don't like angst, so for that I'm grateful, but still- Xander definitely owes Jackson a few explanations for his hurtful behaviors, both past and present.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024I love me a bit of steam punk magic with a dash of mystery. This book starts off pretty cool, though a bit long winded in the monologuing department. Where it fizzled and I Aaaaalmost DNF was how…hrrr shoehorned in the romance part was. Look I get it, romance as a genre often demands spicy scenes. But I legit flipped back and forth way too much thinking I was Missing a chapter. That’s how out of place, and not connected some scenes were. My daughter even commented on how I looked confused. Anytime a story has enough bumps to jar me out of the action and Notice patterns that don’t line up is going to be a docked some stars. It doesn’t have to be the best edited story, and almost every book has plot holes, however, if it’s large and glaring enough for me to spend time trying to figure out what is going on then it’s a problem.
I like the idea of a magical police force with a silly acronym for a name. I like the idea of an inter dimensional marketplace (Clean Sweep anyone?) I guess it was the romance aspect I found most problematic. If they actually hate each other you need to give that time to work out. Maybe book one isn’t where they fall on each ok not to have explicit scenes in every book. One can argue that in a series focused on a single couple it works Better to space the spice out. As it is written I don’t find the relationship believable and the amount of puffing out chests and flexing has got to be my number one pet peeve. Yeah I get it, you are pretty. I don’t want to read about flexing every time someone says anything half way nice. So, may read book two haven’t decided. I’m intrigued enough to give it a shot, but need a break before venturing to book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and steamy ride
The characters are well developed for a first book in a series. There are obvious inspirations from a wide range of sources and the romantic elements feel deep and natural. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glittering fever
A truly intriguing start to a series centered around an opposites attract couple in a unique magical world!
Jackson is an artificer and is hanging on my his fingertips as this is a dying art. Not having much magic of his own his creations work to amplify small amounts of magic to big actions. His once best friend and now contentious neighbour, Xander, is instead a powerful mage who looks down on his artificing. The two find themselves hired to collect a mysterious flower whereupon their mix of magic and brawn is needed to collect this flower from a precarious position. It reminds them of how they once connected well as they work very well together and begin to revisit a friendship lost and possibly something more.
While Xander and Jackson are repairing their relationship things are heating up in the Black Market they live in. There is a connection to what they were working on before and even a possible threat to them and their friends if they don't figure out what is going on.
It is a bit difficult at first to get a feeling for what exactly the Black Market is like. It is an unusual place in being both a market and an entire realm to live in. The description for it is a bit rocky at first and it seems that there will still be much to learn about this world.
A great start off for a series and a really fun read!
