- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt kept my intetest and was hard to put it down. I found myself thinking about the story while I was doing other things. I am looking forward to more of the Laurelhurst Chronicles.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2019Format: KindleVerified Purchase“Before the Flood” is book two in the Laurelhurst series and this time the story is set not in war-ravaged England but post-war New York, where Lydie is hoping to escape her past. What I enjoyed the most is how relatable Lydie is, a teenager who wants to find her way in life but who keeps being pulled back into the past with mysterious postcards and phone calls. What I admired the most about her is how she positively refused to see herself as a victim and did everything to feel “normal” again: making friends, studying art, going out to dances, and, of course, falling in love.
Henry, Lydie’s brother’s Edward’s colleague, couldn’t be a better choice for Lydie. This couple was a real match set in heaven and I was rooting for them through all of their ups and downs and near break-ups. What I also appreciated in this novel was how fleshed out each character was, including Henry’s sister Kate who struggled with alcoholism due to her unhealthy relationship with her mother. These little psychological bits inserted here and there made the story even more interesting to read. I love it when characters have their flaws and backstories, and Ms. Butler is certainly a master of characterization and demonstrating how they can grow and change before the reader’s eyes.
The setting was so vividly presented, I could easily picture myself both on the streets of New York and, later, in England. The historical part, including the characters’ views (Edward’s chauvinistic attitude toward certain matters made me roll my eyes on quite a few occasions but that’s exactly the point: what comes off as chauvinistic to us, was the norm back then and I applaud the author for writing it true to fact) was meticulously researched and delivered. The atmosphere had a nice tint of noir to it with a vague feeling of threat hovering somewhere near, which made the story even more enjoyable.
If you enjoy a good mystery/historical fiction, this series is definitely for you. Highly recommended.
