Cabin 1: Steele Shadows Security, Book 1 Kindle Edition
Deep in the rugged mountains of Berry Springs lies a haven for those seeking protection—and those who dare to break the rules.
Niki
I've always relied on myself to survive—until the night I was left battered and hunted somewhere deep in the wilderness.
Now, I must submit to being under the watchful eye of a former Marine, an arrogant, loose cannon with a temper as scorching as his looks.
Gage
I never expected to move back to my small town to run my father’s elite security firm. But here I am, using booze and women to ease the sting of it all—until I meet my new client.
Now Niki Avery is the only thing I want to consume.
The problem is: she’s off-limits.
Good thing I was never one to play by the rules.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2024I really enjoyed reading Cabin 1: Steele Shadows Security, Book 1!!! All about Niki Avery a Lawyer in her late twenties & Gage Steele an ex-marine trained in lethal combat working as a Security Enforcer for personal security in his family’s business. Niki was on her way home from a yoga retreat, when she was forced off the road and physically attacked. In order to get away she wrestled the captor for the knife he was trying to hurt her with and stabbed him in the neck, then she pushed him off of her stood up grabbed her shirt put it on & grabbed her shorts. When the second attacker grabbed a gun and told her to run, as he peppered her with gunshots, barely missing her as she fled the scene of the attack. She ran and ran getting lost in the woods till she saw lights up ahead. She started to climb when somebody grabbed her pinned her hands and demanded to know who she was & what she was doing on their property in the middle of the night. Read about Niki & Gage and see if he met his match, in a woman who stole his breath! Lots of emotion and toe curling does occur. Lots of characters that bring the story to life, that will make you laugh, roll your eyes and fall in love with each of the Steele brothers. Definite Read!!! Can’t wait to read Book two!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2021By the awful reviews this book has gotten I expected some pretty terrible reading but I wanted to see what the anger was about and figured I’d read the first section and toss it. It was free after all. What was there to lose but a few hours I was stuck in a car anyway. But that’s not what happened.
Okay…first of all, (and we’re talking the first chapter or so, no spoilers) did the people griping even read this book? Niki Avery is attacked just before the book starts. Two men run her off the road and attempt to rape her. Neither succeed and she fights valiantly which does end in the death of one of the attackers. Why are people so upset about this? HE’S the BAD GUY. The reviews made it sound like she gets attacked and then runs into Gage and says “take me big boy”. This does not happen.
“Gage is a womanizer and he is awful about women.”I’m paraphrasing from reviews, but yes, Gage’s intro does show you his half drunk sexualization of women. But it’s part of his story. Which is (again no spoilers) he is struggling with his father’s death and using women and booze to do it. He’s numb. People handle things differently and he wasn’t handling it well. Not all people handle death gracefully. It is just showing that he’s an imperfect human. But he in no way treats women badly. In fact the woman he’s thinking dirty thoughts about is trying to get him in bed too so again…what is the problem? He also steps in when someone makes unwanted advances. Sooooo he has dirty thoughts about women. Name a guy that doesn’t. (Name a woman that hasn’t had dirty thoughts about someone…come on guys.) Yeah it makes him out to be a dog but he admits that he is a womanizer. It’s a family joke. The women around town know it. It’s all part of his backstory. Should a guy be that way? No. Are there men that do it? Yes. But the truth is, when the woman is out in a bad situation, he steps in. The whole purpose is to show that he’s, as the book says, “not tragically, but willfully single.” No one has been able to break through his wall of grief and standoffish behavior. So him getting attached to Niki makes it the romance book people are expecting. Rough and wild man falls for a fiery and feisty heroine who refused to just give up and die. No they don’t immediately jump in bed when they meet but this is a romance book, not real life, so it does happen quickly. If it didn’t the book would last 800 pages. Yes she was attacked, but not violated. And she’s appropriately freaked and disturbed. But her mindset is that no one is going to rule her life but her and she refuses to let those idiots win. Gage’s protective nature blooms with her and amazingly their offbeat relationship works.
Now onto the storyline itself, it’s a fast paced read and the characters all have a depth that I’m sure will evolve over other books. Trying to figure out whodunit was fun and there was little down time when the action picked up. I enjoyed the book. It was well developed and written. Just remember it’s only fiction. It’s not an in-depth documentary on overcoming an attack. It’s a “woman is in grave danger and the security specialist who is guarding her falls in love.” Only the woman defends herself as much as he does. Not all women are wimpy damsels. I liked that about this book.
Ironically the only thing I didn’t like about this book is that the older brother Phoenix was nicknamed Feen.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022Ok I admit I am a fan of author Amanda McKinney. Book 5, Jagger, was the first time I read her and I was hooked. I finally found time to go back and read some new to me older stories. Cabin 1 brings us into the world of Steele Shadows Security and the Steele Brothers. Gage is the impulsive hotheaded brother. He has a reputation as a hard drinking, love em and leave um type. Gage meets Niki Avery, a woman who had to be strong for herself to rise up from the reputation her father saddled her with.
Niki stumbles onto Steele property after being attacked and nearly killed. She is understandably shaken. Being with Gage provides her with a calm but also he feeds her fire, in more ways than one. Can Gage get a grip on his feelings, protect her, deal with his three brothers and with the death of his Dad?
The brothers are well written and I love their interactions. They ring so true in their teasing and fighting. I can not wait to start the next book. The story hooked me in because it was so well written. The world written by the author is so easy to step into (I don't want to leave). The story is smart and the romance while sweet was steamy. I definitely recommend this read.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025I don't know how I feel about this book. I didn't love it, but didn't hate it. Story was interesting. I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2022CABIN 1 starts with some extremely intense action which sets the tone for the rest of the book. It’s filled with strong emotions surrounding not only the action but the drama and passion as well. This is a powerful beginning to the Steele brothers’ stories with great character and storyline development. And, although we’re not left with a cliffhanger regarding Gage and Niki’s tale, there’s a storyline thread that is still dangling and quite a surprising and disturbing twist at the very end that’s going to have you anxious to read the next in the series. If you’re looking for excitement, forceful alpha males who can be controlled by the right female, and really steamy passion you are going to want to read this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2024This is first time I've read one of the "steamier" book
s by this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. The tensions run high, the steamy scenes are classy, and the story never takes a detour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read.
Kept you reading.. So much action and finger biting scenes. The Steele brothers are a force to be reckoned with and Niki is a tough , feisty, needs no man to help her heroine.
- FloraljoyReviewed in Canada on January 21, 2020
3.0 out of 5 stars Action packed romantic suspense
Hang on to the edge of your seat for a fast paced, action filled ride with plenty of hot alpha males, a strong feisty heroine and serious bad dudes! This book had all of the necessary ingredients however it didn't quite live up to it's potential for me. Apart from the epilogue this book takes place over a 24 hour period and I think it could have benefited from being extended over a longer time frame to draw out the tension and mystery and to also allow for greater character development. Gage and Niki had an extreme case of insta-love!
I liked the mystery surrounding their dad's death and look forward to the continuing investigation in upcoming books, especially after the shocking ending. The Steele brothers are volatile live wires who communicate more with their fists than their words but I'm hoping that as more answers come to light and they find love, that they'll settle down. There was also excessive drinking and how they still managed to drive and shoot at targets, I have no idea...
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
