Chaser: Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels Mystery, Book 18 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,275 ratings

Retired cop Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels and her ex-criminal husband Phineas Troutt have made a lot of enemies over the years. But none worse than The Cowboy, a gunslinging nutcase who wants to slaughter them both, and Hugo Troutt, a gang leader who has been plotting revenge against his younger brother for over a decade.

Separately, these baddies are formidable. Together, they are unstoppable.

But Jack has even more hell to deal with. She and her former partner, private eye Harry McGlade, are in L.A. chasing an insane plastic surgeon who specializes in disfiguring his victims. And Jack's colleague Tom Mankowski has problems of his own with a snuff film auteur named Erinyes.

With four psychopaths on the prowl, Jack, Phin, Harry, and Tom will need to call on some old friends if they hope to get out of LaLa Land alive....

This thirteenth Jack Daniels novel brings together villains from Konrath's thrillers White Russian, Everybody Dies, and Webcam, along with heroes from Shot of Tequila, The List, What Happened to Lori, and Flee, for the ultimate West Coast showdown.

The hunt is on. But who's hunting whom?

If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) listener, this handy scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book.

    When I was a child I LOVED the sideshow at the circus - all the different and VERY unusual characters on display. This book has characters stranger than anything PT Barnum could have ever imagined, all bound together in a complex but maintainable plot - you have to pay attention, but the characters are so crisply drawn that it is not a great effort to keep track. And the new characters keep arriving - the tension is high, and the plot keeps winding, unfolding and doubling back - and the ending is suitably exciting and bloodthirsty to satisfy the wildest taste. It's an exciting and a compelling read. And of course the characters and relationships from earlier books have to be reviewed, and while the book does end - it also leads to the next book.
    One warning from the beginning - each chapter is told from the point of view of a different character, so you need to be sure to check out the "title" at the head of each chapter, which tells you who is speaking. I missed that for the first couple of chapters, but confusion led to understanding and I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.

    It’s like Star Wars. You go to the theatre and you see the new one and some folks hate it, because they expect too much.

    Then there are folks like me, happy to be watching more Star Wars.

    It isn’t a modern classic in American lit. Not even close to Joe’s best. He is setting things up for 2020, and he’s going to make at least 20$ from me. As usual for his work, I killed it in one sitting. It’s good, and it’s funny. It’s violent and a bit gory. It is a welcome lead into the future for his little world.

    I don’t regret giving Joe 70% of the 4$ I spent on this book. (What, you didn’t have a coupon?)

    i love when they get the band all together! Fun time - i needed that! Light reading with most of the Konrath characters somehow coming together in a showdown.

    I only write reviews when feel compelled to do so.
    Jack Daniels is one of the strongest characters I've ever read. I patiently wait for each book to come out (ok not really, but dammit if I don't try to.) Why isnt series on TV or made into movies ??
    The writing is AMAZING, the characters are beloved, and the stories are original and addicting.
    This series has only ever improved and I am forever grateful for its continuation.

    This story picks up after Shot Girl and brings some closure for those who need it and gets the whole gang of Konrath's characters together.

    READ IT! It's a damn good story.

    I'm a huge fan but I found this one to be a little predictable and too neatly wrapped too easily. There was missing the interaction between the good and bad. Both were doing things on their own to thwart the other but didn't face each other until the final scene. Then...poof....over. Easy peasy. I expect more from these characters. It was more a story of psychological wounds and marriage counseling.

    This is a very solid four, just-barely-edged-out-of five-star selection. Let me say at the outset, this particular book is NOT one of my favorite Konrath selections. Matter of fact, I’ll have to un-recommend it for anyone who’s squeamish (a huge problem for me) or who abhors, under any circumstances, humor that reduces itself to puns of an occasionally juvenile and scatological nature. I avoid the former, but have known to heartily embrace the latter.
    I liked this one because of its “latter,” regardless of all the one- and two-star naysayers, also because of the details I surprisingly find so many reviewers complaining about (someone once said, “In a tale I enjoy it’s not always the destination, it’s the journey.” Oh, yeah…that was me) and the frequent scene and character changes, the details that bring a setting alive. The characters are well-developed, although there are some mysteries that remain about their previous lives, each is very clearly good or evil, and even the good ones have an edge that makes you think might be worth exploring in greater detail. If there was anything I found annoying, it was Harry’s tendency, toward the end, to babble – even when he wasn’t whacked out under anesthesia. That and the name of Harry's pet capybara, who deserved better. But there's redemption in the self-deprecating and gallows humor, many of the intelligent folk I know aren't above engaging in such efforts, so in my life it's true to form; rather sad for those who do not.
    Unfortunately I have to shorten my list of absentee turnoffs with yet another caveat, because – although the primary plot does resolve – it leaves one fairly vital aspect open, which makes it a cliffhanger: My number one reason for marking any author DNR. (Konrath is probably the only author I've found over the last 20 years or so who could persuade me to essentially buy a subsequent edition, but for a more subtle reason than to get the cliffhanger resolved: I simply love reading his work. Matter of fact, of the dozen or so contemporary authors I consistently read, he is the only one whose newsletter I've signed up for and whose blog I am reading from day one.)
    If you’re still interested, and for those who are keeping score, here are the standings:
    (1) Zero paranormal/supernatural/magic components;
    (2) No profanity (I consider less than four instances to equal none);
    (3) No gooey romance;
    (4) One semi-explicit sex scene, but there is a somewhat consistent sexual undertone;
    (5) Violence (wet but not graphic enough to offend me and I'm pretty gore-sensitive);
    (6) No graphic child abuse;
    (8) No animal abuse;
    (9) No alternative lifestyle agenda or promotion;
    (10) Grammar and punctuation police, come ahead on: I know you'll find something.

    J.A. Konrath's Jack Daniels, along with her friends, take you on a dark, quirky, fast paced ride. So much happens in this book. It was non stop the whole time. The humor is worthy of any 8 yr old boy's bathroom humor and the action is worthy of Stephen King. All the good guy characters are great, the bad guy characters are horrific. Great read, I highly recommend!

    3.0 out of 5 stars “The only way to win a war is to have more guns than the other guy.”

    Harry McGlade is getting the whole Gang together in his house in the Hollywood Hills. Who the whole gang is? Jack Daniels and her husband Phineas Troutt. Tom Mankowski and his partner Roy Lewis. They call Chandler and other mercenaries. McGlade has all this electronical stuff you need to find people or secure your house, he has lots of guns and more ammo and a new pet. McGlade needs the help of the gang to hunt one man. There is this one – not serial killer -, it’s a psychopath that takes away all the beauty of his victims and leaves them ugly, disfigured and disfaced after his special operation. Seventeen victims known so far. Because he must have an surgery background he is called “Plastic”.

    But out there are more than this one psychopath. “The Cowboy” is searching for Jack to torture and kill her – or kill her and torture her? The Cowboy frees Hugo Troutt out of prison. Hugo just has one big target in life: to kill his brother Phin, who is Jacks husband. The Cowboy also gets help grom a mercenary called Hammett, who is the sister of Chandler. Another serial killer is roaming LAs streets but his most wanted victim is Tom Mankowski for revenge.

    The best starting position for this book. The good guys together against the very psychopathic and very bad guys. Lots of action promised. If you are a Konrath fan and even a fan of the Jack Daniels stories, you have to read them in original. Not translated into your native language. If you don't do, you will miss a lot of fun and humor, believe me.

    Virtually all of Jack's past enemies came back to bite her in the thirteenth installment, including some creepy new ones with serious issues against women. I recently learned what an 'incel' was and was rightly horrified. At times, there were so many characters all vying for Jack and friends that it was hard to keep up but the amped up ending was extremely satisfying. Finally, the right people are crushed by bricks, shot in the head or stabbed in the throat.

    2.0 out of 5 stars Violence and crude suggestive sexual content

    I began reading as I thought I had bought previous books. May have had a good story line but I could not read past Harry's sexual talks and the gratuitous violence that seemed just to be over the top.
